The old stereotype of retired couples roaming the country in tiny RVs has changed drastically over the past few years. Now, Instagram feeds are clogged with fashionable millennials showing off exotic locales and life on the road with shiny, modern-looking vans and trailers.
But where’s the in-between on-road adventure for families with kids in tow? If you’re past the newlywed stage but not yet in the retirement phase, a quad bunkhouse may be the answer to your traveling dreams.
Even if you are a young couple, a retired couple, or just someone who travels with friends and wants more sleeping room in your RV, there are a lot of different options to increase your floor plan without having to shell out the money for a Class A motorhome monster.
If you’re new to the quad bunkhouse style, this is a great way to maximize your sleeping and recreation space. Bunkhouse refers to tiered sleeping areas, like bunk beds, that allow the vertical space in your RV to be used without cramping the floor space. A quad bunkhouse will have four bunks, and usually, a master sleeping space with a larger bed meant for two.
We’ve scouted out five travel trailers with quad bunkhouse layouts that help maximize the sleeping space inside so that you, your family, and your friends can enjoy being on the road together and comfortable when it’s time for lights out.
1. Highland Ridge Open Range Roamer 310BHS
One great option for families is Highland Ridge’s Open Range Roamer 310BHS. Four slideouts on this model make it extra roomy and easy to set up or take down with their ACCU-SLIDE slide system.
This feature gives support at four points on the inside and four points on the outside to make sure extending and retracting the slide is ultra-smooth and secure.
Inside, you’ll find hardwood cabinet doors, LED ceiling lights, and zero carpets in the living and kitchen areas, which make cleanups easy and both kid- and pet-friendly.
The kitchen comes standard with an 8 cubic foot refrigerator that can be upgraded to 18 cubic feet. Solid surface countertops, lots of outlets in the prep area, and a center island make the kitchen easy to use.
The outdoor cooking area is complete with a sink, mini-fridge, prep area, and three burner pull-out cooktop and also has room to mount a 32-inch TV perfect for game days.
The main slide has the primary seating area, either a dinette and plush seating or a large u-lounger with two removable tables. The center portion of the lounger is also a queen-sized hide-a-bed, bringing the total sleeping capacity of the interior to nine.
The rear bunkhouse room features a booth-style dinette area that converts to a bed with a top bunk on one side and two bunks on the opposite side with additional storage drawers under the lower bunk which doubles as a couch for additional seating during the daytime.
Both the bunkroom and the master bedroom are accessible through French doors which give this travel trailer a more residential feel and keeps the noise level to a minimum.
The master suite has a wardrobe slide with built-in drawers and additional space for hanging storage. The queen-sized bed features additional storage above, LED lighting, and end tables as well as interior access to the bathroom.
Overall, this travel trailer has 367 square feet of space with an exterior length of just over 37 feet. With the slides fully extended, it spans 165 inches and has a road width of 100 inches, so it is a wide load.
Customers love the large closet in the master bedroom and the second a/c unit with digital thermostat. They also appreciate the shelving on the rear wall of the bunkroom and the thoughtfully netted shelves that keep everything in its place.
2. Jayco Jay Flight 32TSBH
Another model we like is Jayco’s Jay Flight 32TSBH travel trailer. This model is excellent for families and has plenty of room to relax and snooze.
This travel trailer is their triple slide bunkhouse which has two slides to accommodate the bunkhouse at the rear of the trailer and a larger slide for the living area in the main body of the trailer.
The bedroom at the front of the trailer comes with an 80-inch Simmons mattress with wardrobes on either side. Separating the bedroom from the living area is the entertainment center. The slide in the living area holds a sofa with an optional hide-a-bed and a horseshoe dinette.
The pantry is adjacent to the dinette and the kitchen features a double sink, a cooktop with a hood, 8 cubic foot refrigerator, overhead cabinets, and pull-out drawers. This model also has an outside kitchen complete with refrigerator, sink, pull-out two-burner cooktop, and additional cabinet space.
The bunkhouse at the rear of the trailer is spacious, thanks to the two slideouts that hold the sleeping areas. On one side is Jayco’s signature J-cube sofa which doubles as a lower bunk with the top bunk overhead.
The opposite slide holds two bunks as well, and the rear wall features a built-in entertainment unit with cabinets, a flip-up table, and space to mount a TV.
The bathroom is located between the kitchen and bunkhouse so the kids have easy access in the middle of the night. The bathroom has an awesome skylight and porcelain foot-flush toilet, and while the bathroom contains a shower, this model also features an outdoor shower as well.
The exterior length of this Jayco travel trailer comes in at two inches over 36 feet and has a road width of 96 inches. A second tank can double the freshwater capacity from 40 to 80 gallons, and the pass-through storage feature makes this model functional for even large families.
Customers love Jayco’s standard two-year warranty and dealerships find that this model has a high customer satisfaction rating.
This floor plan is incredibly popular because parents love that the kids have their own room, and placing the bunkhouse in the rear means that the living and dining areas don’t have to be reconfigured when everyone’s ready for bed.
3. Keystone Passport 292BH SL Series
Similar to the layout of the Jayco Jay Flight, the Keystone Passport 292BH SL series travel trailer is another great option for families on the road and sleeps eight comfortably. The aluminum framing of this model helps keep it lighter weight than other models with comparable features, so it is easy to tow.
One great feature of the bunkhouse is the bunker hatch. A deadbolting cargo door on the exterior opens to reveal gas struts that help easily lift the bunk to reveal cargo space complete with easy-touch lighting and plenty of room for storage.
The bunkhouse contains four bunks and a wardrobe that also includes a TV shelf. Another cool feature is that three of the bunks have their own set of USB plugs so that sharing the outlets can be kept to a minimum.
The single slide in this travel trailer extends to hold the leather tri-fold sofa sleeper and u-shaped dinette. The large windows in this area let in lots of natural light, and the lighting above these areas is activated with a touch-sensitive switch on the slide wall that activates the dimmer lighting.
The living area also has lots of outlets and USB connections and cabinets under the dinette seating for additional storage. The adjacent pantry includes a hanging rack and adjustable shelving so you can customize the storage for your family’s needs.
The kitchen has hardwood cabinetry with overhead storage and pull-out drawers. The cabinet under the stainless steel farmhouse-style sink is perfect for storing the wastebasket, and the storage in the L-shaped peninsula countertop is easily accessible.
The kitchen also has a tempered glass stove top with three burners, a range hood, and a 6 cubic foot double-door refrigerator.
The master bedroom has USB charging ports on both sides of the residential queen-sized bed. The shiplap front wall gives a headboard quality to the sleeping space and there are also hanging wardrobes on either side of the bed, nighttime reading lights, and under-bed storage.
This Keystone Passport model is an accessible 32 feet, 4 inches long which means that it is easy to find a campsite for since campsites start to become more limited once your trailer hits around 35 feet in length.
Customers love how stable this model is to tow and the roomy floor plan that makes the interior easy to navigate, even when the slide is closed in travel mode. They also find the 15-foot electric awning easy to use and the outside kitchen helpful and fun to use in nice weather.
4. Crossroads Sunset Trail SS289QB
The Sunset Trail Super Lite models from Crossroads are another good choice if you want plenty of sleeping space but still need a lighter weight travel trailer.
Every Super Lite model from Crossroads has 6-sided aluminum construction, solid surface countertops, LED interior lights, Extreme Weather package, and a fiberglass front cap.
One appealing feature of this model is the barreled ceiling which gives the interior a more spacious and home-like feel.
With a maximum sleeping capacity of ten people, the Sunset Trail has a king-sized bed in the master bedroom along with dual wardrobes. The slide in the living area holds a 64-inch sleeper sofa and a 42-inch dinette that can be upgraded to a free-standing table and chairs.
The kitchen includes a glass top, flush mount range cover, stainless steel microwave, ceramic backsplash, and either 6 or 7 cubic foot refrigerator with a magnetized door. The bathroom has a 36-inch shower with glass shower enclosure and skylight.
The rear bunkhouse has a dinette that conveniently converts to sleeping space and an upper bunk on a sturdy hinge so that it can be quickly moved up for more headroom if needed in the dinette area.
Two additional bunks round out this space which also includes a wardrobe with TV hookups just above so that you can easily turn it into an entertainment center.
The exterior camp kitchen includes a mini-fridge and pull-out cooking area with a sink and two-burner cooktop.
A 16-foot retractable power awning creates a nice shady space, and the exterior is prepped for satellite installation and has an easy to access the pass-through storage area.
The Crossroads Sunset Trail SS289QB is 32 feet, nine inches long and has a dry weight of only 5661 lbs, so it doesn’t require the most heavy-duty tow vehicle.
Customers love that this model is well made and lighter than models with similar floor plans. They also appreciate the outdoor kitchen and the interior layout that works for families and keeps everyone comfy.
5. Prime Time Tracer Breeze 31BHD
The third option for a lighter weight bunkhouse-style travel trailer is the Prime Time Tracer Breeze 31 BHD with dual slides. Slightly heavier than other models we’ve mentioned, at 6300 lbs, this can still be towed by a vehicle with a half-ton towing capacity.
This model has a retractable lit awning that runs almost the entire length of the trailer. It also has an outside kitchen with a mini-fridge, sink, and stainless steel grill rather than the standard cooktop. The interior kitchen includes a two-door refrigerator, three-burner cooktop, and range hood with light.
The seamless L-shaped kitchen counter accommodates a large sink with a high-rise faucet. A nice detail is that the kitchen countertop matches the dinette table. The kitchen cabinets are solid wood with a cherry finish and have sturdy brushed nickel hardware. The cabinetry also includes pull-out kitchen drawers which make organizing easy.
The quad bunkhouse includes one of the trailer’s two slides and features three standard bunks and one wider bunk with storage underneath. The bunkhouse also has three screened windows and a ceiling vent for nice air flow and a standing wardrobe with shelving for storage.
The bathroom holds a large 40-inch corner shower with a seat. The sink has cabinet storage below and above, with an open shelf unit, foot-flush toilet, and motion sensor lighting to make evening bathroom runs easier.
The second slide area holds the 87-inch horseshoe dinette located next to the large double-door pantry and plush leather residential couch which extends into an additional bed. This living area is also carpeted for a homey feel and holds two large frameless windows for lots of natural lighting.
The master bedroom holds a queen-sized bed furnished with an Evergreen Select foam mattress and includes two hanging wardrobes and overhead storage. But what is most exciting about this model is that it is a DSI multiple-year winner because of its high standards in design, construction, testing, and customer service.
Part of that high standard is its Eternabond construction which includes laminated aluminum framed sidewalls, rear walls, main floor, and slideout walls and roof.
It also has a gel coated fiberglass exterior which gives strength and retains its lightweight classification. This model also has three-eights inch walk-on roof decking for easy maintenance and snow load approved 5-inch truss rafters.
Customers love the roomy shower, high sleep capacity, and the overall quality of this well-constructed travel trailer. With an exterior length of 34 feet, 6 inches, and a width of 96 inches, this travel trailer goes pretty much wherever you want it to with a minimum of fuss.
With a 12-year warranty on the one-piece TPO roof, traveling in the Prime Time Tracer Breeze also gives you peace of mind no matter what the terrain or the weather.
