This simple trick involves combining lemon juice and baking soda until it makes a paste. Then, rub the paste on your tan, and let it sit for a few minutes. The acid in the lemon will strip the tan and baking soda is a natural exfoliant. This method is perfect if you just have a few patches that you need to even out. 


EXFOLIATION

One of the best solutions for how to apply self tanner evenly is with some good old-fashioned exfoliation. Bring appropriate clothing to your tanning appointment - After your tan, you should wear loose-fitting clothing, so you don’t mess up your tan.     


Stay dry - To help your tan develop, you’ll want to avoid all moisture for at least 4 to 5 hours.       


Shower smart - We recommend showering at least 4 hours after your spray tan, but no longer than 24  hours after. When you do shower, be gentle and only use oil-free cleansers. 


Pat yourself dry instead of rubbing - Self-explanatory but try not to rub your body with a towel after your spray tan. 


Moisturize - After your shower,  moisturize with an oil-free moisturizer. If your skin is hydrated, your tan will fade more evenly. 


Avoid swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, and saunas.


Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, products containing acids, massages, fashion tape, bandages, and anything else that may strip your tan (as we saw above, these are great tips for how to fix self-tanner streaks, but not as good if you want to maintain your glow).   


Keep your hands off your skin as much as possible.

Will a bath remove fake tan?

It's a pain all fake-tanners have had to experience - when you've done a bit of a dodgy job and the fake tan just will not come off. If we added up all the hours we've spent trying to remove fake tan, we'd definitely be in triple figures.


You've got streaks on your legs, patches on your elbows and lets not even talk about the pores on your face.



It's a dead giveaway (what do you mean? I've definitely been sunning myself in Greece, not binge-watching Normal People in bed) and it's not what we had in mind for our summer look.


Beyond the initial EMERGENCY, the next question is: how do you remove your fake tan disaster?


Gentle exfoliation

One of the easiest ways to remove your fake tan is to use an exfoliator or some exfoliating gloves to buff away that product build up.


Exfoliating scrubs buff away the dead skin cells that have been dyed by the tan, creating a more even look.


Make sure to take a shower or bath before you exfoliate, this opens up your pores and softens skin, making it easier to scrub away that tan.


We spoke to cosmetic surgeon and skin expert Dr Lucy Glancey about her top exfoliation tips: "Firstly, you need to exfoliate the skin and look to use one containing oil," she says.


"Use a loofah brush, or exfoliating gloves and work in circular motions all over the body.


"Try not to over scrub the body as you will only irritate the skin, especially if you have overly sensitive skin. You can also add some extra massage oil into the mix which helps break down the DHA (colour element) in tanning fluid."

Take a steamy hot bath

"A long soak in the bath with bath oil will also help to soften the tan," says Dr Lucy.


Soaking in a hot bath won't remove your tan on its own, but it will help with the tan-removal process.


The moist air and heat will open pores where the tan is embedded and make tan removal much easier.



This is a great step to take before exfoliating, especially if you add a few drops of body oil. Plus, it's an excuse to pamper yourself and have a soak with a good book.


Moisturise with body oil

Another way to banish bad tan is by moisturising with your favourite body oil. Apply the oil, massaging all over, and leave it to soak in for 30 minutes.


The oil helps loosen dead skin cells, making them easier to buff off with an exfoliator.



Use lemon juice

This is a great way to remove tan quickly, especially if you don't want a full-body tan removal.


We asked Dr Lucy whether this one actually works - turns out it does, who knew?


"Another home remedy is lemon juice," says Dr Lucy.


"Grab a lemon and mix with sugar to create an exfoliator. The lemon juice will remove dark pigmentation from the skin. Again go easy on the scrubbing.


"Toothpaste has also been proven to help fade tan," she says.


"Simply put a small amount of toothpaste onto a toothbrush and in a circular motion gently rub away the tan. You can also add a small amount of water to the toothpaste before thoroughly rinsing."


However, be mindful that lemons contain vitamin C, which makes skin more sensitive to sunlight.



Make sure you apply SPF generously after using lemon to remove fake tan if you're planning on going out in the sun.

Try a bicarb scrub

Everyone's probably got a tub of this miracle stuff knocking around and luckily it's great for removing patchy tan.


Dr Lucy recommends bicarb as a great fake-tan removing home remedy: "Add two tablespoons of baking soda to some water and mix to create a paste. you can rub it over the worst areas such as hands or feet, leave on for a few minutes before rinsing off."


Go for a swim

Okay, so you probably can't do this one in the moment, but chlorine actually helps to remove fake tan.


Take a dip, then use a gentle exfoliator in the shower post-swim.

Plain yoghurt contains anti-tanning properties, while honey keeps your skin supple and soft. Combine two tablespoons each of yoghurt and honey together. Apply the concoction on the affected areas leaving it for about 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water.

The icy effect of the ice cubes on the skin relieves the pain of the sunburns and reduces skin irritation. Rub some ice cubes on the affected areas for quick results.


19. Multani Mitti 7 Aloe Vera face pack

Both of them are enriched with anti-inflammatory properties relieving the effects of the sunburns. Mix two tablespoons of Multani Mitti and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel with some rose water. Apply this face pack on your tanned areas, letting it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.


20. Wheat Flour

This home remedy is perfect if you want to fight suntan along with brightening your skin tone. Combine two tablespoon of wheat flour with some water to make a thick paste. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then wash.


21. Saffron & Fresh Cream

Saffron is considered an age-old remedy to cure sunburns. Mixing it with milk cream is efficient in removing the last smudges of sun tan naturally. Combine one tablespoon of milk cream with some strands of saffron. Cover the tanned areas with this paste, leaving it for 15 minutes. Rinse with normal water.


22. Cornmeal & Lemon Juice face pack

Face packs made with cornmeal are the talk of the town nowadays. Cornmeal and lemon juice together can make even the dullest skins look healthy and radiant. Add two tablespoons of cornmeal to one tablespoon of lemon juice. Massage this scrub on your skin in circular motions. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and then wash it with cold water.


23. Almonds, rose water & lemon juice

A well-known source of vitamin E, almonds are also useful in treating sunburns and fighting sun tan naturally. Make a paste of 4-5 almonds and add rose water and some lemon juice to it. Apply this paste on the affected tanned areas and scrub for about 5 minutes. Rinse.


24. Green Tea

Green tea is famous for its antioxidants which are extremely helpful while treating tanned skin and reducing skin blemishes. Just dip a green tea bag in a cup of hot water. Let it cool down. Dab a cotton ball in it and apply on the tanned areas. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then wash off.

25. Lemon Juice & Sugar

If you looked at my search history on my computer you would find that often times I’ve Googled: “How to be tan without looking like I tried” and “Self tan secrets of the stars”.  But right under that you would also find “What to do if my tanner turns my skin orange” and “Help! I look like an oompa loompa what do I do?”.


Assuming I’m not the only one with these crazy Google requests…..


One of the advantages of self tanning is if you mess up, most mistakes start to fade within a few days. But sometimes, you use the wrong product and look too orange or suffer streaks and discoloration.  I have put together a list of tips that others have used to undo what usually takes days to be undone.


Because nobody wants to go in public when you’re suffering a self tan meltdown, most of these tips are at home remedies from products you probably already have.


Lemon:


To lighten up the results of a self tanner, apply lemon juice to your body.  You can also rub your hands with a small slice of lemon to remove tanning lotion stains.  I’ve actually done this before and it works pretty well.


Vodka:


To lessen the appearance of a bad tan, start lightly rubbing vodka into your skin.  Personally, I’ve never tried this, but I might just start doing this on a regular basis after a long day at work ;)


Baking Soda:


Add a small amount of baking soda to a moistened washcloth, and rub across self tanning splotches.  Not only will the baking soda bring a bleaching effect, but it also exfoliates the skin.


Hydrogen Peroxide:


When too much tanner has gotten under your fingernails, hands, feet and toenails, apply hydrogen peroxide to affected areas to encourage the color to fade.


Pumice Stone:


Sunless tanning lotions affect the top layer of your skin, so removing dead skin cells will cause the effects to fade away.  Gently rub a pumice stone on your palms to eliminate tanning lotion residue.


Loofah:


Gently rub your hands and skin where you wish to remove sunless tanning lotion.


Washcloth:


Use a moistened washcloth to scrub the orangey residue left behind after self tanning with lotions.


Sugar or Salt:


The abrasive nature of sugar or salt granules can help remove tanning lotion stains on your hands.  Simply moisten your hands and rub with the sugar/salt.


Nobody should have to endure a self tan meltdown that lasts for days.  Use these tips the next time your self tanning product pulls a fast one on you.

There are many different skin types and ways to apply products. The best method might vary depending on a person’s skin tone, their preferred products, and the methods they use.


Ways to fade a suntan

People can try the following methods to help remove or fade a tan from the sun or a sunbed:


Exfoliation


Gently exfoliating the skin will help remove pigmented dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin. This can reduce the appearance of the tan.


The two main types of exfoliation are chemical and mechanical techniques:


Chemical techniques involve chemicals that dissolve dead skin cells, such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids.

Mechanical techniques use brushes or sponges to remove dead skin cells.

People with dry, sensitive skin may find that a soft washcloth and chemical exfoliator work best. People with thicker, oily skin may find that stronger chemicals and mechanical methods work best for them.


Regardless of skin type, be sure to exfoliate gently. Overdoing it can turn the skin red and may prompt acne breakouts. People with darker skin tones may find that over-exfoliating can cause dark spots on the skin.


People should be sure to moisturize their skin after exfoliation to prevent over-drying it. Moisturizers containing aloe are a good place to start when it comes to softening skin.


The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) offer further advice on how to exfoliate safely.


Skin lightening products


The AAD recommend some ingredients as being effective skin lighteners. These may take several repeat applications to prove most effective, but they can work to fade darker areas of skin.

glycolic acid

retinoids

vitamin C

kojic acid

People may be able to remove excess self-tanning product from their skin by taking a shower.

People can try the following methods to help remove self-tanning products from the skin:


Take a shower or bath


If a self-tan becomes streaky or there are lines of color, a shower, bath, or even a quick rinse with soap after applying the product can help even out the skin tone.


People can use a soft, wet washcloth to exfoliate the skin and remove excess product.


Baking soda


Because self-tanner essentially “dyes” the outermost layers of skin, exfoliation methods to remove these outer skin cells are some of the most sure-fire ways to reduce the appearance of a self-tan.


Combining baking soda with just enough water to make a paste is a very effective way to remove excess tan buildup or streaking from the skin. Gently scrub in a circular motion to reduce the appearance of streaking without irritating the skin.


A gentle nail buffer


This solution will only be suitable for callused and tougher areas of the skin, such as the hands and feet. Use a nail buffer to gently buff away any areas of collected tanner that make the hands and feet appear dirty or too orange.

You know the drill – get in, strip down and get sprayed. You do everything as you’re told and your fake tan seems fine. Until you get home and you start noticing little problems. Whether you’ve turned orange or you just have a few blotches, we have the tricks you need to fix a bad fake tan.


Let’s start with the easy stuff – getting rid of the oompa loompa orange. It the orange is isolated in a small region, like the face or hands, just try using make-up remover to get off. If you are willing, you could even try bleach – not domestic bleach, only use the hair bleach that you would use for your upper lip. Apply this to your hands and feet, but be extremely careful as the bleach could whiten the areas you apply it to. Lemon juice is another good remedy to reduce the “orangeness” of your tan. Squeeze a couple lemons and apply the juice using a cotton wool pad to smaller blotches and streaky areas.


For an orange that goes all over your body, keep bathing and exfoliating until the fake tan fades. You could even try swimming in a pool to let the chlorine help. Also a good idea is to rub baby oil to help grab the tanning solution then bath an hour later.


When it comes to blotches do not panic, these are easy enough to fix. Nail varnish remover is your trusted friend here. Use a little bit on a cotton swab and damp lightly over the blotches. This will lighten them and help them better blend into the tan. You could also try scrubbing them off with body wash in the shower and exfoliate a few hours later.


Streaks can be a little tricky and there are multiple tricks to remove uneven lines. The first thing you should try is evening your fake tan. Try to cover up the streaks with tanning solution. You will need to massage a generous amount of moisturiser mixed with tanning solution into your streaks. If that doesn’t work, try using toothpaste (in small areas) to lighten the skin and better blend the streak. Nail varnish remover works the same as well. If there are too many along your body, try swimming or bathing to completely remove your fake tan, exfoliate for two days, and try tanning again.


There you have it. The next time you end up with a bad fake tan, do not panic. These tips should help minimise the damage. And remember, it’s not permanent. Even if you do nothing, in a few days your tan will settle down on its own.

What disease makes you look like you have a tan?

Everyone has sun-sensitive skin. It’s the reason we tan and sunburn. It’s why freckles, age spots, and skin cancers appear.


Some people are born more sun sensitive than others. People who have an extreme sensitivity to sunlight are born with a rare disease known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). XP dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer

Because the body cannot protect itself from UV light, a person’s risk of getting skin cancer skyrockets. It’s estimated that XP can raise the risk of getting skin cancer 10,000-fold.


Most children who have XP develop skin cancer before reaching 10 years of age. At an even younger age, these children can have pre-cancerous growths on their skin.


Skin cancers and pre-cancerous growths develop because it takes time to diagnose XP. You cannot look at a newborn and tell that the child has XP.


This disease tends to reveal itself when a child spends time outdoors. Some children develop a serious sunburn the first time daylight hits their skin. Not all children who have XP sunburn so easily.


For many children, the first noticeable sign of XP is many freckles on their skin, which usually develop before the child is 2 years old. As the child spends time in the sun, larger dark spots also appear. The skin will also feel extremely dry.


It’s these warning signs that give the disease its name. The word “xeroderma” means extremely dry skin and “pigmentosum” refers to the freckles and dark spots.


People who have XP may also develop eye problems. Sunlight can cause cancers to form on their eyes or eyelids. Cataracts and other eye problems may also arise.

Tegumental angiomyxoma-neurothekeoma (TAN syndrome)[1] is a syndrome, an acronym, and eponym[citation needed] proposed by Malaysian ophthalmologist of Chinese Descent, Tan Aik Kah (b. June 1975).[1] Angiomyxomas are associated with LAMB (lentigines, atrial myxomas, muco-cutaneous myxomas, and blue naevi) syndrome,[2] NAME (nevi, atrial myxoma, myxoid neurofibromas, and ephelides)[3] syndrome and Carney syndrome (atrial, cutaneous and mammary myxomas, lentigines, blue naevi, endocrine disorders and testicular tumours).[4]

Case

Tan et al. reported a 10-year-old girl with multiple superficial angiomyxoma associated with neurothekeoma palpebrae.[1] There was no evidence of visceral involvement. The lesions were excised with no recurrence during follow up.[1]

Is Tanning With Coconut Oil Bad For Your Skin?

If you’ve been slathering on coconut oil to protect your skin while laying out in the sun, you’ll want to really pay attention to this recommendation that dermatologists widely agree on: coconut oil should never be used as a replacement for sunscreen. 


“DIY homemade coconut oil sunscreens are increasingly popular on blogs and in social media,” Allawh says. “With a favorable scent and with natural botanical ingredients, these are sought after. However, the reality is coconut oil is not an effective sunscreen and provides poor sun protection.”



Sure, coconut oil gives you some protection from the sun’s UV rays, but it’s a very small amount that likely equates to an SPF 4 (which is not considered powerful enough to protect from sunburn, premature aging, or skin cancer). According to one study, coconut oil blocks somewhere around 20 percent of UV rays.1 This level of protection isn’t sufficient to prevent a sunburn or other skin changes that can later develop into skin cancer: “I would never approve coconut oil as a tanning lotion,” Jaliman says.



Additionally, coconut oil may even provide a false sense of security when you’re out in the sun. The oil is so hydrating that you may not notice when your skin is dry or burning: “This can actually lead to more time in the sun instead of less,” Cook-Bolden says. 



Is It Safe to Tan With Coconut Oil Layered Over Sunscreen?

In short, no—because there's no "safe" or "healthy" way to tan. Whether you’re using coconut oil or not, dermatologists agree that tanning isn’t safe. It may feel good to soak in the sun, and you may like the way your skin glows after tanning, but it’s simply not a good idea, as it proposes a direct threat to your health (and in some cases, to your life):



"UVA and UVB exposure damages the skin, resulting in premature aging and leading to skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States,” Perkins says. “There is no such thing as a healthy or safe tan. Whether your skin darkens or burns, you have accumulated damage." 



And if you’re thinking of experimenting with layering coconut oil with another SPF product, dermatologists don’t recommend that either. In order to work effectively, sunscreen ingredients need to absorb into the skin, and a layer of coconut oil could interfere with that process, Camp says. 


When it comes to tanning, dermatologists and other health experts want you to remember—there’s no such thing as a healthy tan: “These are words that dermatology residents recite like school children recite the Pledge of Allegiance,” Camp says.

Use an SPF product that's formulated with coconut oil: If you simply like the scent of coconut or appreciate the moisturizing benefits it offers, you can safely use coconut oil during sun exposure only if it's on the ingredients list in an SPF product.

If you have oily skin, you may want to be careful with using coconut oil as moisturizer, especially on your face. Jaliman explains that coconut oil is highly comedogenic, meaning it can clog your pores. “Although it’s highly moisturizing you want to keep it away from your face if you have acne prone skin,” she says.

2. Oil

Before exfoliating, soak your skin in oil – and we mean really soak! Slather your over-tanned skin in baby oil, coconut oil or olive oil, leave it for at least half an hour to absorb, then gently exfoliate in the shower. The oil helps loosen the dead skin cells that have taken on too much colour.

3. Exfoliate

Whether you use a mitt or a body polish, experts agree a good physical exfoliation is key to removing tan build-up – just be careful not to scrub too hard, as it can irritate your skin. Exfoliation is also the ideal follow-up once you’ve soaked in oil, as it breaks down the tan, meaning you don’t need to scrub as hard.

This is a great option to deal with larger patches of tan that need quick removal. Mix around 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a little water or coconut oil to form a paste, rub over the area you want to clean up, leave for a few minutes and then wash off.


According to one Reddit user, adding dishwashing liquid will super-charge the mixture for cleaning nails and hands. “Mix 1:1 ratio of baking soda + dish soap and stir into a paste. Scrub the paste into the skin with a loofah/nail brush. The really stubborn streaks took a little extra scrubbing.” (PS: Dishwashing liquid will likely dry your skin, so be sure to slather on the hand cream after you’ve de-stained.)

There are a few different ways to use lemon juice to remove fake tan – whichever you choose, test that the juice doesn’t irritate your skin first.


Tanning expert James Read suggests squeezing lemon juice onto a clean fake tan mitt (or a hand towel), adding a little water, then microwaving for about 2 minutes. “Leave to cool slightly, then rub over the affected area. The warmth activates the alpha hydroxy acids in the tan causing it to fade.”

What about fake tan on clothes, carpets or the couch?

If you got your fake tan on anything over than yourself, you want to treat is asap - even if the colour hasn't shown up yet. 


For clothes, flush the fabric with cold water first. Hold the reverse side directly under the tap and let the water run through, forcing the formula out of the fabric, rather than rubbing - which could smear the stain.


Mix together a little dishwashing liquid with warm water and dab the area, working from the outside of the stain in. Rinse, then throw it into the washing machine on a cold cycle. (And cross your fingers.)
