Do performance chips really increase mpg?

I have done a lot of traveling by car and SUV driving 20,000+ miles a year. I have found many easy ways to save at the pump and add MPG.

Gas Mileage Chip: Improve the mileage of your SUV or car

Performance-enhancing chips can save you money at the pump and increase horsepower at the same time! These incredible chips can be found on common sites such as “Amazon.” Chips will typically give you up to a 6 mpg increase and up to +35% horsepower boost. Chips like DiabloSport S1000, Range Technology, and Tunesport Performance are all great choices. If you have a GM vehicle or Chevy then I recommend going with DiabloSport S1000 plugin Chip. Some of these Chips are incredibly easy to install and require no mechanical experience. Simply plug the Chip into your OBD/diagnostic port, and you are on the way to 4-6 Miles Per Gallon gain! Plus you’ll get a big kick in horsepower too! Installation for "plug&play" Chips typically takes less than 15 minutes.

Not All Chips Are The Same

Not all chips are made the same and some do require mechanical experience for installation. Chips like the “Innovative Performance Chip” are great but they require a little more skill to install them. These types of chips usually mount on the engine and will require wiring for power. I highly recommend that you have a mechanic to install these types of chips. Installation time is usually about an hour. All the chips mentioned usually will include an installation kit, and a detailed installation guide.

Improving Mileage With a Performance Chip

Gas mileage chips, also known as performance chips (used interchangeably in this article), are devices that attach to the engine of your vehicle with the sole purpose of increasing miles per gallon and performance. Gas mileage chips intelligently deliver fuel to your engine through intelligent communication with your vehicle. Essentially, these devices monitor your driving habits and help to convert unused energy into useful energy. As you drive, gas is delivered to the engine to power your vehicle. Studies found that not all of the gas was being delivered, instead converting to fumes which were not converted into useful or efficient energy. Gas mileage chips are used to deliver this wasted energy directly to the engine, resulting in better fuel efficiency, increased horsepower, and increased torque.

Gas Mileage Chips, For The Serious Motorist

Many people ask "If performance chips increase fuel efficiency, power, and torque, why doesn't the auto industry implement them at the factory?". It's a simple matter of producing autos for the masses. Automakers manufacture their vehicles for the average driver. Their stock calibrations are tuned for average Joe, the ones who will probably use low octane gasoline or may not service their vehicle regularly. Adding the performance chip is also an added cost that gets passed on to the consumer. In this day and age where money is tight and auto-makers are scrambling to assemble vehicles at the lowest cost to quality ratio, the omission of the gas mileage chip is one that makes sense. Performance chips are for those who demand the most out of their vehicle in terms of power and fuel efficiency and don't mind paying a little extra for it. In the long haul, the chips will pay for themselves.

Getting The Most From Your Gas Mileage Chip

The main reason many car enthusiasts buy performance chips are for the performance gains in both horsepower and torque. For the average consumer, performance chips are bought for the outstanding gas mileage increase they deliver. Performance chips make adjustments to the air to fuel ratio and ignition timing, improving engine operating efficiency. When your engine doesn't have to work as hard to generate power during combustion, the result is a marked increase in fuel efficiency. Less work means less fuel burned, allowing your vehicle to maximize the use of each drop of fuel put into it. The most noticeable increases come in larger vehicles that tend to carry heavier loads, such as pickup trucks or SUVs.

Gas mileage chips aren't necessarily the perfect solution for everyone, but we're under the belief that every little bit helps! For maximum fuel efficiency, we suggest putting our [GasMileageTips] to good use and adding a performance chip. The end justifies the means! Before the next wave of fuel increases hit, go out and grab your gas mileage chip.

Gas mileage tips: How to improve your gas mileage

Improving gas mileage doesn't require purchasing a new hybrid vehicle, nor does it require converting your combustion vehicle to run on alternative fuel. Efficient driving habits and simple improvements can help you increase gas mileage from your current car.

Driving Efficiently

Inefficient driving can lower your mileage substantially! Driving smart means more miles out of your car... and less chance of getting a ticket. Here are some simple tips to follow for efficient driving.

Avoid aggressive driving

Aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration and braking, speeding, and weaving in and out of traffic, can lower your gas mileage by 8% in the city and by as much as 33% on the freeway!

Keeping Within The Speed Limit

Fuel efficiency takes a huge nose-dive as soon as your vehicle accelerates above 60 mph. Optimal fuel levels are usually below this number, so the next time you feel like you want to lead-foot it, think about all the gas you're burning.

Removing Excess Weight

Removing dead weight from your vehicle can have a minimal, but long term impact on your overall mileage, especially for compact vehicles. For example, an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce mileage by 2%, or roughly .05 cents a gallon.

Maintaining Your Vehicle

You'll find additional gas mileage increases by maintaining your vehicle. Following a few simple tips can go a long way in saving you money!

Replace Dirty Air Filters

Dirty air filters are a common occurrence that drivers don't give much of a thought to. How about this for a thought, a dirty or clogged air filter can reduce your fuel efficiency by as much as 10% and could potentially cause damage to your engine!

Maintaining Proper Tire Inflation

Keeping your tires at the proper recommended inflation level can increase your mileage by 3 to 4 percent. Nitrogen inflation is recommended for the best performance.

Planning To Reduce Trips

With gas prices at all-time highs and no sign of letting up soon, planning trips can be essential to saving the most money. Rather than making several trips to several locations over the course of several days, make adjustments so you can accomplish everything in as few trips as possible.

Combining Errands

Already hit upon, combining errands WILL save you time and money. Making several short trips from a cold start can burn twice the fuel of making a single trip over the same distance. A warmed engine doesn't work as hard as a cold engine, so making single trips in lieu of multiple trips can save money.

Commuting

We all have to work and, unless we work from home, that involves commuting. There are several things you can do to cut down on your commuting. Try joining a car-pool or ride-share program at your place of work. Many interstates and freeways now have car-pool lanes (also known as High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, or HOV for short). Not only will you save money on gas, but you'll also get to work faster and emit less pollution into the environment.

If car-pooling isn't your cup of tea, you should find out if your place of work allows telecommuting. Telecommuting is where you work from home and tap into your company's network. Telecommuting is becoming a more popular option as fuel prices continue to rise.

Finally, if car-pooling and telecommuting don't work out, there's always public transportation via the public transit system. Although not the first choice as a gas-saving measure, it's still a viable one.

Hi Lora, it is not only better for our environment and the planet we live on but better for our pockets as well. A win, win situation as far as I can see. Im glad you agree.

Great article on keeping our vehicles fit and doing what we can to conserve fuel and be less wasteful! When I drive, I will be more conscious of these tips, but I have also adopted more environmentally friendly alternatives to driving a car and ride my bicycle more for light shopping trips and take public transportation if I want to go downtown for entertainment. It also is a time saver for not having to take 30 minutes to find a parking space which so often happens. We all need to do whatever we can to cut down on carbon emissions and adopt a much more energy saving and less polluting lifestyle! Thanks for sharing, Jason.
