How can I naturally shape my diamond face?

How to Contour a Diamond Face Shape | Learn to Balance Your Features | Youtube 2017

Much like achieving the perfect messy bun or mastering liquid eyeliner, figuring out your face shape is one of those things that sounds a lot easier than it actually is. And purchasing so many products (like sunglasses) or figuring out the best hairstyle for you (we've been there) is based on this elusive shape that isn't entirely foolproof to understand. If you've ever tried the "trace your face in the mirror" trick only to be left staring at a squiggly blob that resembles a puddle or fluffy cloud more than any sort of recognizable shape, we feel you.

To help you always pick the most flattering makeup and hairstyles for your face shape, we're sharing our tips on pinpointing your exact face shape. Ahead, Dr. Catherine S. Chang, Tracy Ftacek, and Dr. Smita R. Ramanadham share the characteristics for each face shape that can help you find out which shape you have. Rest assured knowing this key bit of information will help you wield your makeup brushes and style your locks with that much more confidence. Pin the handy guide on figuring out face shapes, and then keep scrolling to find out your own.

  • Square face shapes typically feature a strong and squared jawline.
  • Your forehead is approximately the same length as your jawline.
  • Your face measurement is about equal in length and width.
  • Your cheekbones have minimal curves and are about the same as the width of your forehead and jaw.
  • "The chin is often wider as well and does not come to a narrow point as seen in other facial shapes," says Dr. Chang.

To check to see if you have a square-shaped face, look to your chin. Is it wide, but not narrow? If so, you may have a square-shaped face!

  • If someone drew lines connecting the center of your hairline to your cheekbones and down to your chin, it would create a diamond shape.
  • Diamond face shapes typically have a pointed tip and high cheekbones.
  • Your hairline is narrow in width.
  • "The cheekbones create the widest part of the face shape," says Ftacek.

  • Rectangular faces are sometimes called "oblong."
  • They're similar to a square-shaped face but longer than they are wide.
  • "[They] are similar to squares and have angled and defined jawlines with distinct, sharp features," says Dr. Ramanadham.
  • Your forehead, cheeks, and jawline are approximately the same width and your chin has a very slight curve.

  • Heart-shaped faces tend to have a pointed chin, with the forehead being the widest part of the face.
  • "The length of the face is slightly longer than the width at the cheekbones and forehead," notes Dr. Chang.
  • "A heart shape [...] gradually decreases in width so that the jawline is the narrowest," adds Dr. Ramanadham.

  • "[It] is characterized by a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones and have no major angles or edges," says Ftacek.
  • The sides of your face curve slightly outward instead of being straight.
  • Your chin is rounded, and your cheekbones are the widest part of your face.

  • People with oval faces will have foreheads that are only a tiny bit wider than their curved chin.
  •  It's similar to an oblong face but with a softer chin and more curve to the sides of the face.
  • "The shape is longer than [it is] wide with a narrower jaw than the cheekbones," explains Ftacek.
  • "The cheekbones look more prominent in this facial shape as it is the widest part of the face," says Dr. Chang.
