7 Ways to Tell a Dog You Love Them
As we know, Chihuahua’s are very playful little dogs, it’s always a great idea to have a number of fun games you can play together. These games will also come in handy on bad weather days as, just like us, your Chihuahua may not be overly happy to venture out when it’s rainy, cold or windy. Take a look below at our ‘Top Ten Fun Games to Play’:
- Fetch.
This game will never grow old, all dogs, old and young, will always enjoy a game of fetch! You
can play this with their favourite toy, an old sock or anything else your Chihuahua takes a fancy to. Simply get your Chihuahua’s interest by waving the item in front of them until they are ready to play… then throw it a short distance and watch your Chihuahua collect it. Remember to give praise when your Chihuahua brings it back to you to ensure continual enjoyment.
- Hide and Seek.
As you may have read in some of the other articles on this site, Chihuahua’s love to be around their favourite person so hide and seek is a game that will keep them amused for ages! Command your Chihuahua to ‘stay’ or ‘sit’ then go off and hide then call their name for them to come and find you… watch the sheer joy when your Chihauhua discovers where you are.
- Find the treats.
Hide some treats around the house and encourage your Chihuahua to find them. This game always has a happy ending for your Chihuahua. If your Chihuahua is struggling to find the treats then give them some hints, remember to praise them for finding the prize!
- Which hand?
As with the ‘find the treats’ game ‘which hand?’ game has just as happy an ending. Simply hide a treat in one of your hands and put them in front of your Chihuahua, it won’t be long until they figure out which hand is hiding it.
- Three cups game.
Again, like the previous two games, this one involves treats so will always be a favourite! We’ve all seen magicians or performers hide something under one of three cups, mix them up, then ask you to find the correct cup, this game is exactly the same but involves your Chihuahua and a treat. To start with put the treat under a cup whilst your Chihuahua watches then encourage them to indicate to that cup either with their nose or their paw. Once they’ve got the hang of it you can mix the cups up to make it harder.
With any games involving treats, be careful not to give too many as treats should never replace proper meals.
- Tug of war.
Chihuahua’s love to play, pounce, chase and bite things. You will find that your Chihuahua probably has favourite toys, grab one and move it around in front of your Chihuahua until they grab it, gently pull back and forth in a tug of war motion. Let the toy go every so often, tricking your Chihuahua into thinking they’ve won, then grab it back and play some more.
Be careful not to be too aggressive as your Chihuahua has a very fragile jaw and neck and we don’t want to hurt them. Your Chihuahua will generally indicate to you how much you can tug!
- Laser pen.
A laser pen could be the best toy you will ever buy your Chihuahua. Chihuahua’s, like most dogs, love to chase things and because of their size, the smaller the item the better. Shine the laser near to your Chihuahua and move it around, watch as your Chihuahua chases and tries to catch the laser dot, move it around slowly then quickly, even ‘hide’ it under the sofa, your Chihuahua will never get sick of this one!
- Under and over game.
Teaching your Chihuahua tricks is excellent for their mental stimulation but teaching a trick that requires movement is great for both mental health and physical health. Find yourself a small item of furniture, such as a small stool or a child’s play chair, nothing too big as you want your Chihuahua to jump over it. Teach your Chihuahua to go ‘under’ or ‘over’, this may take a while initially but with plenty of praise and fuss once they have accomplished both it will turn into a really fun game.
- Upstairs/downstairs.
This game will burn some serious energy. Simply teach your Chihuahua to run ‘upstairs’ and run ‘downstairs’. To begin with you may have to go to the top of the stairs and call your Chihuahua up using the word ‘upstairs’ and the same for ‘downstairs’, with plenty of praise your Chihuahua will soon understand the game. Once your Chihuahua has learnt the words you should be able to watch from either the top or the bottom of the stairs as your Chihuahua runs up and down.
- Put the toys away.
Always a favourite! Simply get your Chihuahua to help you tidy. Use a phrase like ‘tidy up’, and teach them to put their toys away. Start by moving one of their toys very slightly away from where they are normally kept and repeating the phrase ‘tidy up’ put the toy back where it belongs. Encourage your Chihuahua to do the same, once they get the hang of it you will be as pleased as they will when they play the game!
Chihuahua’s will get no end of pleasure by pleasing you so learning games and new tricks is essential for them, they will enjoy any new game you play together.
