I love the original Mission Impossible movie. Ever since I was a kid I've loved it. Fuck knows why - I didn't have a clue what the plot was about when I was 6. But when I was a kid, watching Ethan Hunt descend from the ceiling by a wire and clinging onto a super fast train was the thrill of my life.Only recently after rewatching MI: Fallout on Netflix did I realise that I hadn't seen the first film for good long while. When I thought about it, I realised that I hadn't watched it since VHS players went out of fashion, and that was 2005 at the latest.So I resolved to sit down and watch it again, and holy-fucking-shit.I'm still not entirely sure *now* that I know what's happening in the story. But god damn, even in it's weird moments, this film is magnificent.I don't think enough people acknowledge just how iconic the Langley heist scene is. It's probably been parodied and referenced in popular culture more times than any other movie scene in modern history, and deservedly so. It's original, immensely well-measured, paced to near perfection and is an exercise in how tension is done right. Even as a kid when I didn't understand the fuck was going on, I still knew the stakes were unbelievably high.Cruise's delivery of 'RED LIGHT! GREEN LIGHT!' at the movie's climax is equally iconic, but after rewatching and researching online I'm stunned at how nobody has ever brought up the weird British accent he uses when he says it. Check for yourself. Who's right and who's wrong?Jim just casually wandering up to Ethan after he's made the phone call to Kittridge is completely bizarre and almost hilarious, especially with that hyper-dramatic music in the background.Emmanuelle Béart as Claire might be one of the weirdest casting choices in history - there are so many other actresses who could have easily carried that part with more... Normalcy.And one more thing: everything about Jon Voight freaks me the fuck out.
