What Age Do Puppies Calm Down? And When Will My Dog Grow Out of its Crazy Hyper Behavior?
8 Months to 1 Year – Your Chihuahua, at this age, is now becoming an adolescent. A Chi will calm down a bit after this age. While still playful, a bit of the more serious adult personality is peeking through. With good training, by this age undesired behaviors have been corrected and the dog is fully housebroken. A Chi is almost done growing at this point.
1 Year Old – By this age, the silliness of puppy-hood is just about done, however since most Chihuahuas have such amazing personalities, you will see that your dog has a good sense of humor and a charming personality that will stay for life.
Growth is most rapid and noticeable during the first year. It can be quite a roller coaster ride… Sometimes you will see a clear difference in just a week…other times, it will slow down with seemingly no change, only to be followed by a quick growth spurt.
By the end of Year 1, growth is now slowing down. Many Chihuahua dogs will not grow taller after the age of 1 year to 1.5 years, however they will still slowly fill out in width (chest area will be most noticeable).
Weight increases will be small. If your Chihuahua gains any considerable amount after the 1 year mark, you will want to discuss this with your veterinarian to rule out any possible health concerns. He or she is now just about fully grown.
Your dog's growth will begin to slow between 12 weeks and six months, and by six months your dog will be close to her adult size. Chihuahuas are considered adults and are fully grown at one year. It's safe to say that small dog breeds (Chihuahuas) have reached their full size by 10 months to 1 year of age. Small-medium dog breeds (Toy Poodles, Beagles, Miniature Schnauzers) will finish growth by about 12-15 months and will have reached their full weight by about 18 months. According to the American Kennel Club :
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed and must not weigh more than6 pounds as an adult, according to the American Kennel Club's breed standards. Toy breeds grow more quickly than larger dogs, and your Chihuahua will be close to her adult size when she is 6 months old.
So although your dog will be near full size it will not be fully matured until 18 months to 2 years in my opinion.
Different breeds may take different amounts of time to reach their full physical size, and also sexual maturity, but most dogs aren’t truly mature until they are between 1 1/2- 2 years old. There are a few breeds (mostly very large ones) that many don’t feel are completely mature much before 2 1/2 - 3 years old. “Full-grown” is a vague term that can cause misunderstandings, because there are different components to being adult.
