How do I measure my child’s head for a dirt bike helmet?

The best way to measure to make sure you get the right size helmet for your kid is to break out a small metal or cloth measuring tape.

Now, each brand of helmet might have a different measuring guide, so be sure to check in the product description just in case there’s a major difference. In general, however, here are some basic measuring guidelines.

Starting one inch (or 25 mm or 2.5 cm) above the eyebrows, wrap the measuring tape around your child’s head directly above his/her ears and to the widest part of the head. Don’t pull the measuring tape tightly; let it slack a little. It’s better to have a helmet that’s roomier than to be too tight.

Taking the measurement around the widest part of your kid’s head will ensure that you get the right size of helmet for your kid’s comfort and safety.

If you don’t have a metal or cloth measuring tape around, you can use a piece of string to measure your kid’s head, and then you can use a ruler to figure out the string measurement.

Helmet Materials:

There are four main materials that dirt bike helmets are made of, but, as I’ve wondered, I ‘m sure you’re wondering what the difference between them is. I’ll explain it simply:

Polycarbonate:

Polycarbonate is a popular material for dirt bike helmets. It’s a high grade injected mold plastic that’s strong, protective and generally light.

This material does its job in protecting rider’s who wear polycarbonate helmets, but it is more likely to crack under heavy impact; that’s something to keep in mind.

Carbon Fiber:

Carbon fiber is considered one of the best materials for dirt bike helmet composition due to its light weight and durability.

It’s an awesome combination of light and protective. The cost tends to be on the higher side compared to other materials, but the high quality is worth the investment for those who dirt bike more often.

Fiberglass:

Fiberglass is considered the next level of polycarbonate. It’s stronger and stronger under heavy impact. The heavier weight of fiberglass makes it less popular, especially for children’s helmets.

Tri Composite:

Tri composite is a combination of carbon fiber, kevlar and fiberglass. Helmets made of tri composite are generally stronger with the three material combination.

This material is heavier than carbon fiber but lighter than fiberglass. This material tends to be more expensive than others, but many consider its quality worth the purchase.

Standards of Safety:

The DOT stands for the United States Department of Transportation. The DOT has set high standards that dirt bike helmets must meet in order to be considered safe and of acceptable quality.

DOT measures helmets penetration (strength against hard, heavy objects), impact attenuation (how well the helmet absorbs and displaces the energy from an impact), and retention (the helmets ability to stay on the rider’s head during impact).

DOT is the main standard enforcer for dirt bike helmets, but ECE Certification and Snell Certification are also credible certifications to consider if a helmet appears as being approved by the other two.

Most often, if a helmet is ECE or Snell certified, it is likely DOT certified. But if you’re are mostly concerned with the DOT certifications, you’d better check that the helmet you’re looking into is DOT certified.

Helmet Maintenance:

Dirt bike helmets are often overlooked in their maintenance and cleaning, but that doesn’t make them any less important to maintain. Here are a few simple tips to clean and maintain your child’s helmet:

The Lining

The lining of a dirt bike helmet is easily what gets the grossest out of all of the headgear. Good news is, it’s easy to clean!

Most helmets come with removable lining. In order to prevent misshaping and fabric wear-down in the washing machine (which can occur after many heavy washings), you can also hand-wash the padding using a mild detergent, rinse it well and set it out to dry in a well-ventilated area in the sun or overnight.

If your child’s helmet’s lining is in need of a deeper clean than handwashing, you can remove it from the helmet and throw it in the washing machine. It’s best to wash it on a gentle warm cycle. Like hand-washing, let the lining air dry instead of throwing it in the dryer.

Make sure that the lining is completely dry before putting it back in the helmet.

The Rest of the Helmet:

The main part of the helmet that needs cleaning is the lining. But once that’s taken out, it’s always a good idea to wipe down the inside and outside of the helmet with a wet washcloth to remove any lingering sweat and odors.

If your or your child has a helmet without a removable lining, the easiest way to clean it is this: Squirt some mild laundry detergent or dish soap in a big laundry sink or clean bucket and fill it with warm water.

Soak the helmet in the water and scrub it down. Make sure the soap thoroughly cleans the padding and lining. Once done scrubbing, rinse the helmet really well to remove the soap (really rinse the lining and foam padding) and set the helmet out to dry.
