How To Grow Your Lashes Using Coconut Oil
Now that you know the best products to use to help grow your eyelashes, we’ll answer some common questions and go over what you need to do to help your eyelashes grow faster and longer.
Can Coconut Oil Contribute to Eyelash Growth?
We’ve talked a lot about what products you can use, but we haven’t answered the most crucial question yet – does using coconut oil actually make your eyelashes grow longer?
In the long run, yes. The various vitamins and minerals included in coconut oil can help contribute to eyelash growth over time.
Just like the hair that grows on your head, in order for your eyelashes to be thick and healthy, they need vitamins and minerals to help nourish them. Think about it this way – you likely have a shampoo that you like, precisely because it includes components that help keep it soft, shiny and healthy. Coconut oil has many of the elements that your eyelashes need to maintain their health.
For instance, coconut oil contains vitamins A and E, which have shown to help lashes grow over time. Naturally, this does not always work for every person – in fact, some individuals are genetically pre-dispositioned to have short lashes. However, providing your lashes with the nourishment they need to be healthy can help them grow longer and become more robust.
Additionally, those who have tried to grow their eyelashes in the past using different methods may have noticed that it takes quite some time. However, using coconut oil can help expedite the process. Just like using hair serum has shown to be beneficial in nourishing your hair and helping it grow faster, longer, using coconut oil on your eyelashes helps them grow more quickly in many cases.
Ultimately, it would help if you thought of it like this: you use fertilizer to help plants grow more quickly. Growth often correlates directly to the amount of nourishment the plants get from the soil. The higher the quality of the soil and fertilizer you use on your plants to help them grow, the higher the quality of the crops you produce. Your eyelashes and hair are the same way. When you are willing to provide them with nutrients, they become more healthy and grow more quickly.
G2PLUS Disposable Eyelash Mascara Brushes Wands Applicator Makeup Kits 100 Pack
Naturally, the time it takes for you to see results depends on various factors, including:
Your genetics.
How frequently you treat your eyelashes with coconut oil.
The quality of the coconut oil you use.
The other vitamins and minerals you mix with coconut oil for your eyelashes.
Your diet and overall physical health.
Therefore, the amount of time it takes for you to see results from using coconut oil to grow your eyelashes can vary. Some individuals see growth as early as seven days after using the products. For others, it can take up to a month of regular use to see results. However, there are plenty of tips and tricks available online to help you throughout the process.
How Safe Is Using Coconut Oil on Your Eyelashes?
Another important question many people ask regards the safety of using coconut oil on your eyelashes.
Realistically, it’s a reasonable question. The eyes are naturally sensitive. Getting things in them can be painful, to say the least, and can cause long-term damage or permanent blindness at its worst. Making sure the products you put on or near your eyes are safe is essential to minimizing harm.
Research conducted on the safety of using coconut oil near or around your eyes shows that it’s perfectly safe and will not cause excessive irritation. In fact, many studies show that coconut oil can help reduce the chances of infections and other serious health issues surrounding the eyes.
Additionally, it’s also safer to use on your eyes than many other eye-makeup remover products. Because coconut oil has natural fatty acids, it is less likely to cause eye irritation.
The natural vitamins and minerals included in the oil help prevent and soothe irritation. Some individuals may experience irritation if they get coconut oil directly in their eyes. However, if you apply it directly to your lashes, it is perfectly safe.
How Do You Apply Coconut Oil to Your Eyelashes?
Another thing to consider is how best to apply coconut oil to your eyelashes. After all, if you’ve ever used coconut oil before you know, it can be messy and greasy. However, there are several different ways you can apply coconut oil to your eyelashes.
Many people like to mix their coconut oil with castor oil. Castor oil is known for its conditioning properties. In most cases, individuals mix equal parts castor oil and coconut oil into a small vial, like a mascara tube and use the included lash wand to coat their eyelashes.

Tips for Growing Your Eyelashes
Here are some tried and tested tips for helping your eyelashes grow:
Regularly comb your eyelashes, as this improves blood flow and helps stimulate the hair follicles
Practice massage techniques around your eyelids and near the base of your lashes. Just like combing, it helps improve blood flow and promote growth
Refrain from pulling and tugging on our eyelashes, or using heated curlers. These can damage your eyelashes and stunt growth
Maintain a healthy diet. Lash and hair growth issues often stem from vitamin deficiencies. Eating a well-balanced diet helps improve these deficiencies. Additionally, a healthy diet helps improve the quality of your skin, which can, in turn, nourish your hair follicles
Stay hydrated! One of the things many people tend to forget when it comes to trying to have healthier skin and hair is that hydration is vital to shiny, healthy hair and clear skin
Take a break from wearing makeup. Makeup can clog the pores and cause skin irritation, making it more difficult for your lashes to grow. Plus, wearing eye makeup can cause accidental damage and breaks, which are important to avoid when trying to grow long, healthy lashes
Regularly condition your lashes to promote healthy growth
Frequently Asked Questions
What Can I Do if My Lashes Aren’t Growing Back?
If you’ve experienced an extensive loss of eyelashes and are having trouble growing them back, you may be experiencing a medical issue, such as thyroid gland problems or vitamin deficiencies. In this case, it’s best to contact your doctor for further guidance.
How Long Does it Take for Eyelashes to Grow?
Eyelash growth, as mentioned above, takes time.
However, in most cases, you’ll likely see significant growth within a month of using coconut oil or other growth products. Various factors play a part in fast-growing, healthy eyelashes, however.
Can Coconut Oil Help Grow Eyebrows, Too?
Yes!
Coconut oil is great for all hair types, including eyelashes and eyebrows, as it provides nourishment in the form of hydration and concentrated vitamins. Simply apply coconut oil to your eyebrows the same way you’d apply it to your lashes to promote growth for full looking eyebrows.

Artificial: Careprost (same as Iatisse) has been a life saver for me. That’s great 😊 I googled ‘Getlash247’ and got it. My eyelashes tend to fall out from time to time and I’ve yet to find the explanation for it. I am gentle around my eyes when cleansing, never curl after applying mascara, have never had lash extensions, and have cycled through all of my eye products to make sure I’m not allergic to anything I’m applying. My self confidence plummets when I see a clump of lashes fall out in front of me in the mirror and I’m thankful careprost works. Careprost helps them grow back relatively fast. I wish I didn’t have this issue but I’m glad to have something that helps damage control.
Wondering if coconut oil for eyelashes works? Join the club. Every girl wishes she had longer, fuller eyelashes – why do you think there are so many cosmetic products out there to help us achieve a fuller-lashed look?
The problem is, however, that too much mascara can not only look a little ‘overdone’ but can also actually cause damage to your eyelashes making them more likely to break or fall off.
Does Castor Oil Grow Lashes? Eye Doctor Examines
The perfect look is natural and healthy where each lash is clearly defined, dark and striking, and not coated or glued up with thick layers of mascara.
While there are some great cosmetic products out there, one of the best home remedies to help your eyelashes grow thick, strong, and beautiful is coconut oil.
By now, you’ve probably heard all about the benefits of coconut oil for skin, hair, and weight loss…but what about coconut oil for eyelashes?
This yummy-scented oil will make your lashes appear long, soft, and shiny and it won’t clog your pores like other oil-based products which means no nasty breakouts on your skin.

Coconut Oil for Eyelashes

This delicious-smelling oil has become one of the beauty industries not so well kept secrets and is a product that every girl should have in her bathroom.
The health benefits of Coconut Oil are massive and it’s a product that has been praised for its wowing effects on skin and hair, in cooking, and now, yep, you guessed it, for longer, fuller eyelashes too.
Coconut contains many healthy properties such as natural fatty acids which are needed to help cell growth in the human body, therefore applying it to your eyelashes helps new ones to grow.
It’s also one of the best natural ways to give your eyelashes a little boost, to improve their overall health, and to help them frame your eyes and really make them ‘pop.’
What’s so great about it? For starters, it can be used to instantly improve your eyelashes.
This light oil has a pleasant scent and, once applied to the lashes will immediately soothe and moisturize them, help to create separation and definition, and give them a slightly reflective, glossy quality which helps create a fresh and natural look.
Regular and long-term use of coconut oil comes with more lash benefits, helping to replenish them with much-needed hydration and lash-boosting nutrition which ultimately help lashes last longer before falling off or breaking.
Coconut oil can do this because it is rich in proteins and fatty acids (both of which your lashes thrive on) and penetrates the hair shaft of your lashes to strengthen it with its proteins and fatty acids.
The result? Longer, thicker, healthier lashes.
Coconut oil is also really easy to find – you can get coconut oil in supermarkets, health food stores, and now, due to its popularity as a cosmetic superpower, in drugstores and pharmacies too.
Of course, you could always scoop it up online for a better price as well.
Compared to most eyelash growth serums, it’s also relatively inexpensive and the amount you need to use to help your eyelashes grow is so small that it will last you for ages too – so a brilliant investment all around!
Is Coconut Oil Good For Eyelashes?Coconut Oil Good For Eyelashes
The awesome thing about coconut oil is that it’s totally safe for your eyes.
Of course, you don’t want to be rubbing this stuff into your eyes (unless you enjoy blurred vision) but while you should be gentle and careful when applying Coconut Oil to your eyelashes, should some get into your eye you can wipe or rinse it away and it shouldn’t cause you any irritation.
Not only is coconut oil safe – coconut oil is actually good for your eyes. You see, most of the fatty acids found in coconut oil are lauric acid, which has ample antifungal and antibacterial properties that will protect your eyelashes from falling prey to infections that limit hair growth.
And those same fatty acids do all this while also delivering great nourishment and hydration to your lashes and hair follicles!
Does Coconut Oil Help Eyelashes Grow?Coconut Oil Help Eyelashes Grow
Here’s what you need to know about how to make your lashes grow: There are factors like nutrients and conditioning that boost the health of your lashes.
Coconut oil falls under this category. By giving your lashes the nourishment they need, lash conditioners like coconut oil hydrate and replenish your lashes to help them grow healthier and stronger.
Healthy eyelashes are much less likely to fall off or break and more likely to grow to their full length and thickness, which is why people see great results in their lash line simply by providing nourishment.
Here’s what a few people had to say about using coconut oil for eyelash growth…
“Wow, I am amazed! I’ve been using this on my eyelashes for about a week and a half.
I kid you not within the first 4 days I saw a difference! A week ago I overplucked my eyebrows a bit, I’ve been using this on them for about a week, lots of regrowth and they’ve actually thickened.”
“I am one of those girls who was NOT blessed with long, luxurious, thick eyelashes.
In fact, I have been known to apply THREE different kinds of mascara daily, (thickening, lengthening, conditioning), just to make it look like I even have eyelashes.
So, imagine my surprise when, during my morning makeup routine, I suddenly noticed that I HAVE EYELASHES.
Long eyelashes, you guys, gigantic, even, (my daughter says they look like “spider legs”, please see the drawing above for her interpretation).
I don’t know why it works, but (at least for me), it appears that it does, (if my new tarantula lashes are any indication).”
“I do like it on my eyelashes though because it moisturizes them well so they don’t fall out as often.”
All that being said, coconut oil will not necessarily make your lashes longer.
They will strengthen, nourish and help your lashes grow to their full height and thickness – which will definitely improve your lash line and make your eyelashes look longer – but they won’t extend your lashes past their natural length.
You see, there’s a limit to how long eyelashes can grow. So if you have naturally short lashes, the only way to make your eyelashes grow is by using an eyelash growth serum.
These serums contain ingredients that both extend the growth phase of your lashes so they grow to longer lengths as well as increase the number of lashes that sprout so your lash line is fuller and thicker.
If you’re looking to actually lengthen your lashes – go for a great eyelash growth serum. And use the coconut oil alongside it to nourish and strengthen your eyelashes.

We often see people especially boys who have got a long and voluminous pair of eyelashes.
There are also several women out there in the world who do not mascara to get voluminous eyelashes.
Are you jealous of them?
Yeah me too, cause some of us need coats and coats of mascara to give volume and make them lengthy.
But the question is are long lashes are enough?
The chase to this quest is NO, you know why? Because if your eyelashes are not strong then there is no use for these long lashes.
So try to make your lashes strong and voluminous instead of working on the length of these bad girls.
Will Coconut Oil Make Your Eyelashes Grow Faster?
Many people say that applying coconut to your eyelashes helps them in growing faster.
Is it a myth or fact?
This is not correct at all, although it can help you in growing the lashes to their full length. It can also help in growing eyelashes stronger. But it has no concern in growing lashes faster.

Why Is Coconut Oil Better Than Fake Lashes Or Lash Extensions?
There is much evidence that can prove that coconut is better than fake lashes or lash extensions. I am going to mention some of them.
Coconut oil is a natural ingredient that does not hurt your eyelashes or anywhere else. Whereas, extensions or fake eyelashes may affect the natural beauty of your eyelashes.
The lash extensions or fake eyelashes are expensive and hard to maintain as compared to coconut oil.
If you use these products then you can rub your eyes that irritate. While using coconut oil you do not have to face such a problem.
So coconut oil wins here. Also, apply coconut oil at night for better results.

The majority of women choose healthy “thick long eyelashes that gently frame the face” rather than “glammed up” eyelashes for special occasions or just because they want to feel beautiful. Coconut oil is an excellent choice for eyelashes.

Is coconut oil good for eyelashes?
Is coconut oil good for eyelashes?
Yes, every night before she went to bed, my great-grandmother brushed her eyelashes with coconut oil. The reason I know this is because my mother told me so.
Castor oil, on the other hand, aids in lash lengthening, in my opinion. Use a mascara wand (OfCourse with no mascara in it, you may recycle an old used mascara wand by washing it well or simply buy a new mascara wand to apply them).
Coconut oil is great because it’s completely safe for your eyes.
However, if you accidentally get some into your eyes while applying Coconut Oil to your eyelashes, you may simply wipe or rinse it away without causing any irritation.
Coconut oil is not only safe, but it is also beneficial to the eyes. So, as you can see, most of the fatty acids present in coconut oil are lauric acid, which has a wide range of antifungal and antibacterial qualities, which can protect your eyelashes from infections that impede hair growth.

To make matters worse, using too much mascara damages your eyelashes, increasing the likelihood that they may break or fall out.
The ideal look is one that is healthy and natural, with individual lashes that are well-defined, dark, and eye-catching, rather than heavily coated or glued with multiple coats of mascara.

Apply with an eyelash brush or a mascara wand:
Coconut oil can be used to lubricate a brand-new brush or wand.
Using your lashes as a brush, apply the oil to the ends of your lashes.
Top and bottom lashes are covered.
Eliminate extra oil from your eyelashes and skin with the use of a cotton swab.
Is coconut oil a true eyelash booster?
When it comes to hair, skin, and eyelash care, coconut oil is a common topic of discussion in beauty blogs and articles. Coconut oil can be used in a variety of ways by beauty experts on the internet. You may, however, question if coconut oil aids in the growth of your eyelashes.
What you need know about growing your eyelashes is as follows: The health of your lashes is aided by variables such as nutrition and conditioning.
This is the case with coconut oil. Coconut oil, for example, is an excellent lash conditioner since it hydrates and replenishes your lashes, encouraging them to grow stronger and healthier.
Those with healthy eyelashes are less prone to fall out or break and are more likely to grow to their full length and thickness, which is why people witness tremendous improvements simply by supplying nutrients.
Risk factors to be aware of when applying coconut oil for eyelashes
An allergic reaction to coconut and its oil is unusual, but it can occur. When it comes to skin care, virgin coconut oil is generally harmless, but it’s still important to keep it out of your eyes.
In order to avoid irritation or an allergic response, the best option is to use only organic virgin coconut oil.
Make use of a clean, wet washcloth to get rid of any excess oil around your eye area. To avoid eye irritation, immediately flush your eyes with water if you get the oil in your eyes.
What are the Coconut oil advantages for eyelashes?
Is coconut oil good for eyelashes?
1. Studies on humans and animals
Using virgin coconut oil on the eyelids is safe, according to reliable research. Coconut oil is not only safe to use in this sensitive area, but it can also assist the skin surrounding your eyes in addition to your eyelashes.
2. Lashes that are more durable
Using coconut oil on your hair can help protect it from the effects of shampoo, hair products, and styling. It’s possible that eyelash hair could benefit from the same research as head hair, despite the lack of data.
Lauric acid, which is included in coconut oil, appears to aid in the absorption of coconut oil into hair, according to study. As a result, coconut oil appears to be superior to other oils in terms of long-term preservation.
3. Safety guard
You can put coconut oil around your eyes as a “safety precaution.” Coconut oil is hydrating in the same manner as it is beneficial for your hair in addition to “good for your lashes”. Lauric, myristic, caprylic, and capric acids are all present in high concentrations in coconut oil, making it an excellent eyelash conditioner. They’re “medium chain fatty acids,” which, together with protein, are essential “building blocks” for every cell in your body.
4. Stimulating hair development
“Stimulating hair development” is another benefit of using coconut oil on your eyelashes. People’s eyelashes can develop “dandruff and other fungal diseases” if they use the oil to treat their skin problems.
With its “reflective, glossy quality,” it gives your lashes a “air-brushed, new” appearance. Summer is the best time of year for this. Keep an eye on how much coconut oil you’re putting on your body. Because of the heat, you may already have oily skin in the summer.
5. Coconut oil can be used to kill germs
Coconut oil is a powerful disinfectant.
Naturally occurring microorganisms populate our eyelashes.
Even while these microorganisms are perfectly natural and can be found in everyone’s eyelashes, they can cause bacterial and fungal infections in the area around your eyes when it isn’t taken care of correctly.
According to studies, these illnesses can induce inflammation of the hair follicles, which can lead to the loss of eyelashes.
Not to worry, coconut oil comes to the rescue once more.
Your skin and hair are protected from infection by the antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut oil.
When it comes to medium-chain fatty acids, lauric acid is the most antimicrobial of them all.
This means that applying coconut oil on a daily basis will not only protect your eyelashes by fighting harmful bacteria, but will also encourage hair growth.
6. Lash lengthening
Hair can be moisturised and protected against protein loss and damage by using coconut oil. Assuming similar advantages also apply to eyelash hair, fewer eyelashes may fall out, giving the appearance of more thickness and fullness.

Top 5 FAQs and answers related to Is coconut oil good for eyelashes
Coconut oil helps with eyelash growth – is it true?
Rather of promoting eyelash growth, coconut oil encourages eyelashes to reach their peak length and thickness. Coconut oil will not speed up the growth of your eyelashes, but it will reduce the frequency with which they fall out. Antibacterial properties in coconut oil can help prevent hair loss.
Is coconut oil better for eyelashes than Vaseline?
Coconut oil can help keep lashes from falling out if they are too weak to do so on their own. Moisturizes the eyelashes by using Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.
Are the eyelids safe from the effects of coconut oil?
Antibacterial and antifungal, anti-parasitic, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities are also found in coconut oil. Place a cotton ball soaked in coconut oil on your closed eyelid. You can repeat this several times a day until your eyes begin to feel better.
Is there any risk of eye damage from using coconut oil?
When it comes to skin care, virgin coconut oil is generally harmless, but it’s still important to keep it out of your eyes. In order to avoid irritation or an allergic response, the best option is to use only organic virgin coconut oil.
Can you use coconut oil as eyelash booster?
As with olive oil, coconut oil’s ability to penetrate the hair shaft makes it a valuable product for hair care. You may already be using coconut oil to treat dry skin, but you may also use a small quantity with a cotton swab to try to promote hair growth on your eyebrows.

Does coconut oil make your eyelashes grow? No, coconut oil won’t make your eyelashes grow longer or faster than usual.
It can help your lashes reach their maximum length and stay full and healthy.
Coconut oil is derived from the meat and milk of coconuts. There are many coconut oil products designed for your hair or lashes. But it’s best to use pure virgin or refined coconut oil.
In this article, I will explain the benefits of coconut oil for your lashes and clear up some misconceptions about what coconut oil can and can’t do.
I’ll talk about the safety of using coconut oil around your eyes. I will also discuss other oils you should consider using and explain how to apply coconut oil to your lashes for maximum benefit.
Is coconut oil safe to use around the eyes?
Yes. Many people worry that using coconut oil on your eyelashes will harm your eyes, but that’s not the case.
As long as you apply the oil to your eyelashes carefully and avoid getting any in your eyes, you’ll be fine. Using the right tools to apply the oil is crucial.
Dr. Rupa Wong recommends using an applicator brush to apply coconut oil to your eyes instead of a Q-tip. That’s because q-tips have tiny fibers that can potentially enter and irritate your eyes.
Does coconut oil help eyelashes grow?
Now, on to the big question: Will coconut oil make your eyelashes grow longer or faster? If so, what is the scientific reasoning behind that?
It’s important to understand that coconut oil is not a magic solution that will cause your lashes to grow to their full length overnight. Neither will it cause your lashes to grow twice as long as they usually do.
What it will do is ensure your lashes remain full, healthy, and moisturized so that they can grow to their full potential and maintain that length.
For details on lash regrowth, check out our post on how long it takes for lashes to regrow on their own.
Coconut oil helps your lashes grow to their full potential
Coconut oil contains vitamins and fatty acids that are critical for hair health. There’s a reason many people use coconut oil on their hair, and your lashes are no different.
If your eyelashes are lacking the nutrition and moisture they need, they may have trouble growing to their full length. They may fall out quickly, making it seem like your eyelashes are not growing fast enough. That can also make your lashes appear thinner than they are.
Weak eyelashes can get damaged quicker when using styling tools like eyelash curlers or when lash extensions are inexpertly applied.
Using coconut oil can strengthen your lashes and give them the nourishment they need.
Applying coconut oil to your lashes won’t instantly make them grow full and thick. But applying it consistently to your eyelashes will help them grow as much as they can, prevent them from getting damaged, and prevent the lashes from falling out.

The benefits of coconut oil for eyelashes
Using coconut oil on your lashes daily will bring you a host of benefits. Even applying oil just a few times a week to your lashes will bring you long-lasting positive results.
Here is what will happen after applying coconut oil to your lashes every day:
Stronger and voluminous lashes
Coconut oil will nourish and strengthen your lashes. It will add volume by hydrating your lashes and preventing them from becoming dry and brittle.
Your stronger lashes won’t get damaged as easily. As a result, they will look thicker and longer.
Softer and glossier lashes
I applied coconut oil to my lashes for one week and noticed they were significantly softer and gentler to the touch. Despite suffering from coarse eyelashes due to getting them permed, I was able to soften them up with one simple ingredient: coconut oil.
My eyelashes became glossier. They not only felt better, but they looked better, too! You’ll enjoy the improved texture, and your eyelashes might even feel lighter.
Protection against bacteria
Despite internet claims to the contrary, according to the School of Medicine Sciences at UNSW Sydney coconut oil doesn’t kill bacteria.
It can serve as a barrier against bacteria, fungi, and irritants that can damage your lashes. Those bacteria can also lead to hair loss.
Using coconut oil on your lashes at night can be particularly effective. Your bed sheets and pillowcases can contain all sorts of irritants and bacteria that are harmful to eyelash health, especially if you don’t wash them often.
While you can use a hair cap to protect the hair on your head, coconut oil is the best solution to protect your lashes while rolling around all night.
Prevents eyelashes from falling out
As I just mentioned, coconut oil can protect your lashes from bacteria that can cause them to fall out. However, coconut oil has long been studied for its hair loss prevention qualities.
One study found that coconut oil prevented protein loss and, subsequently, hair loss more than other oils like sunflower and mineral oils. If your eyelashes are damaged due to bleaching, perming, or UV exposure, coconut oil can help.
Which coconut oil should you use?
It’s best to use an all-natural oil instead of coconut oil with added ingredients. If there is a long list of chemical additives in the ingredients section on the bottle, avoid it. You don’t know what those ingredients can do to your eyelashes or what will happen if they get into your eye.
I like the Nutiva brand of cold-pressed unrefined USDA organic coconut oil.
Any pure coconut oil will do, whether it is refined or virgin coconut oil. Since virgin oil is less processed, it remains a slightly superior choice. You can get coconut oil in your local pharmacy or grocery store; even oil in the cooking section will work if it is pure.
If the coconut oil seems solid, you’re probably keeping it in a place that is too cold. Once it warms up, it will become liquid again.
Coconut oil remains solid until 74 degrees Fahrenheit, so keep it at or slightly above room temperature.

How to apply coconut oil on eyelashes
The first step is buying the right coconut oil – see above. You can add some aloe vera and mix it with the oil in a bowl before applying. Aloe vera can also hydrate and moisturize your lashes, but it’s optional.
Before applying any coconut oil to your lashes, make sure they are clean. To enjoy the full benefits of coconut oil, they can’t be dirty or have mascara on them.
Dip a soft makeup brush (or clean mascara spoolie) into the oil or mixture and apply it gently to your upper lashes. Clean the brush with water and repeat the process with your lower lashes.
Use a soft tissue or clean brush to remove excess oil from your eyelashes, eyelids, and around your eye.
When should you apply coconut oil to your lashes?
The best time to put coconut oil on your lashes is at night. That way, the oil can hydrate and nourish your lashes all night, and you’ll wake up to soft, gentle lashes. It will also protect your lashes while you sleep. Clean your eyelashes every morning.
If you put oil on in the morning, your eyelashes may appear greasy during the day. It will be easier for oil to get into your eyes; at night, your eyelids are closed and protect your eyes from the oil.
medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil contains medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides.
Which oil is best for growing eyelashes?
Coconut oil
This is the best oil for your lashes, as it is made of lauric acid, which is easily absorbed into the hair. It is also very lightweight. Those two factors make coconut oil easy to apply and easily absorbable.
Coconut oil also prevents hydro fatigue. This occurs when your hair or lashes get wet and dry quickly. It can happen when you shower often and then use a blowdryer to dry your lashes (yes, some people do that).
How to Get Thick and Long Eyelashes with Coconut Oil & The Results to Expect
MCT oil
MCT or medium-chain triglyceride oil contains medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides. This oil is derived from coconut oil and is liquid at room temperature.
The benefit of using this form of coconut oil is that application with a spoolie is much easier than virgin coconut oil which is solid at room temperature.
Sunflower oil
Sunflower oil and other oils contain linoleic acid, which is heavier and will only coat your lashes without being absorbed as deeply.
Olive oil
Olive oil for eyelashes is a decent choice as it contains several anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, it may be too heavy for some. Consider a lighter oil, like castor oil, almond oil, or argan oil. All of those oils are excellent for the hair on your head, as well, so they are dual-purpose.
Vaseline
Vaseline is not an oil but a petroleum by-product. Vaseline will not make your eyelashes grow back faster. It will create a moisture barrier between your lashes and your environment but it’s not the first choice for lash regrowth as it provides no nutritional benefit for your lashes.
Key takeaways on using coconut oil for eyelashes
Coconut oil has massive benefits for your hair and eyelashes. It will nourish your lashes, serve as a barrier to protect them from bacteria, and help them grow as long and thick as possible.
It’s best to apply coconut oil every night for optimal benefits. But, if you forget to do it one night, don’t worry.
Avoid applying it in the morning, as that can lead to greasy eyelashes during the day, but continue applying it the following nights.
What makes eyelashes grow faster?
There’s a reason that mascara takes up a bajillion threads on beauty message boards: People want to know how to get longer eyelashes.
The thickness and length of your lashes totally vary. Most of us have 90 to 160 upper lashes placed in 5 to 6 rows on our upper eyelid.
Although the anatomy of the hair is different, if the locks on your head are sparse, your eyelashes probably will be too, according to Soul Lee, an eyebrow and eyelash extension specialist at Beautiful Soul Studio in New York City.

How to grow your eyelashes with Latisse
Latisse (aka bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is the only eyelash growth product approved by the FDA that helps grow, thicken, and darken your lashes.
When applied every day to the upper eyelid lash line, you usually get results in about 2 months. But, once you start using Latisse, you can’t stop or your eyelashes will go back to normal.
“It really is the only thing that works,” says Lee (research backs her up, too.)
Before getting started, you’ll need a prescription for the Latisse. Most individuals who are able to prescribe medication are able to prescribe Latisse. They’ll also be able to rule out any reasons why you shouldn’t use it.
There are side effects to consider:
red, itchy, and dry eyes
darkening of the brown pigment of the iris (especially for blue- and grey-eyed folks)
darkening of eyelids
unwanted hair grown around the eyes (if applied incorrectly)
It’s also vital to keep it out of your eyes!
Home remedies to make your eyelashes look longer
Your lashes can get damaged from wear-and-tear just like the hair on your head. Eyelashes can also just go AWOL and fall out.
“It can take 3 months to a year for lashes to grow back,” says Lee. And that’s assuming the follicle’s not dead and the eyelash has just fallen out. Worst case scenario: The eyelash hair follicle dies and the lash won’t grow back (RIP lush lashes).
Here are some home treatments you can try to help make your eyelashes look longer and thicker.
Coconut oil
No-poo fans swear by coconut oil to moisturize their dry locks. That’s because research shows a fatty acid in coconut oil can penetrate strands of your hair.
In theory coconut oil can condition eyelashes like it does hair, but Lee says coconut oil still won’t make your lashes grow.
You can use a clean spoolie to apply coconut oil to lashes at night, and wash if off in the morning. This might protect your lashes from damage and condition them, allowing them to look fuller.
Castor oil
Castor oil — a type of vegetable oil — won’t make eyelashes grow, says Lee. There isn’t enough concrete research to prove it can grow eyelashes either. Some studies have shown the chemical compounds in castor oil might reverse or prevent hair loss, but more research is needed.
You can still use it at night with a spoolie and wash it off in the a.m. if you want to help condition your lashes.
Olive oil
There’s no research proving that olive oil makes your eyelashes grow, but you can use it as a cheap eyelash conditioner just like castor oil to help your eye fringe look healthier. It’s also great in a salad dressing.
OTC lash serum
According to Lee, there are some over-the-counter (OTC) lash serums that can make lashes appear fuller and longer, but it’s just not the same as Latisse (i.e. actually makes lashes grow longer).
Some OTC lash serums also have the active ingredient isopropyl cloprostenate, which is similar to what works in Latisse. But, the trade off is it isn’t as potent, reliable in results, or regulated by the FDA (which has prompted lawsuits for its potential side effects).
Biotin supplement
Biotin is called vitamin H or B7. It’s found in foods like spinach and eggs, and can also be taken as a supplement. Hey, vitamins are nice. But, there’s limited research proving that a biotin supplement actually helps grow your eyelashes (or your hair).
And biotin can interact with some meds, so check with your healthcare provider before trying.
Vaseline
Vaseline (aka petroleum jelly) is an occlusive moisturizer. It’s your BFF for chapped lips and dry hands/knees/elbows/feet.
Vaseline can make your lashes look moisturized and shinier, but that’s all. There’s no research proving petroleum jelly makes your lashes grow. If you still want to give it a go to help moisturize your lashes, you can apply a rice size amount at night with a cotton swab.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera is another moisturizer we know and love. But alas, there’s no research backing up the claim it makes your lashes grow longer. Like other remedies, you can apply it at night and it may help moisturize your lashes, but that’s really it. Some good news? Aloe is soothing on a sunburn 🔥.
Home eyelash remedies that don’t work
The internet has plenty of remedies, but some of them can actually be dangerous. Avoid these remedies like the plague:
❌ Lemon peels or lemon juice. First off, do you really want to put an undiluted acidic substance close to your eye? (No! No, you do not!). There’s no research proving it makes eyelashes grow longer.
❌ Vitamin E oil. While vitamin E can condition your lashes, sadly, there’s zilch in the way of research proving it makes lashes lengthen. In fact, an allergy to vitamin E near your eyes could be very bad! Stick to castor oil (which naturally has vitamin E) if you want to use an oil to condition your lashes.
Do eyelashes grow longer naturally?
If you weren’t born with magically long eyelashes, then you know that sometimes even the thickest, most volumizing of mascaras can still leave your lashes looking a little sad and stubby. And if you’ve already tried all the long-lash alternatives (see: eyelash extensions, lash lifts, falsies, the works), you may be ready to get to the literal ~root~ of your problem and figure out how to grow your lashes, not just fake the length.
And that’s why I’m here. Because there’s actually a whole world of serums and conditioners that help hydrate, enhance, and even lengthen your eyelashes—you just gotta know which ingredients actually work (remember, we are talking about your freakin’ eyes, after all). And to help you out, I got Ilyse Haberman, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone, to break down everything you need to know about growing your eyelashes safely (including the sh*t you’ll definitely want to avoid).

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to get extra-long eyelashes, let’s revisit the basics that you probably never even learned, k? The growth cycle of your eyelashes consists of three phases: catagen (the dormant stage, where your lashes just chill), telogen (the shedding stage, where your lashes naturally fall out), and anagen (the growth phase, where they, you know, grow).
I GREW MY EYEBROWS FOR 126 DAYS 😨 | NICOLE MADI
Seeing as your lashes spend most of their time either hanging out or falling out, it’s understandable why actually growing out your eyelashes can take a sec. In fact, Dr. Haberman says it can take three months for your lashes to grow naturally. But because I know you’re impatient and you want your eyelashes to grow overnight, you’ll be happy to know there is a way to extend the growing phase.
How can I grow my eyelashes naturally?
There are a ton of natural ingredients (see: castor oil, vitamin E, and coconut oil) that help hydrate and condition your lashes, but they won’t technically make them grow. “Lash conditioners may help strengthen lashes, prevent them from breaking, or lightly swell them so they look a little thicker,” says Dr. Haberman, but they’re not actually causing them to grow longer. Womp.
So all those at-home remedies involving coconut, castor, and olive oils? As far as growing your lashes, don’t expect any miracles—at most, you’ll see some extra shine and strength. There’s actually only one FDA-approved eyelash growth serum (Latisse, which, DW, I’ll get to in a sec), so if you’re really trying to get thicker and longer lashes, your best bet is to get a prescription.
That said, there’s nothing wrong with adding natural conditioners and oils to your lash routine. Sure, they may not actually grow your eyelashes, but they can help create a strong and healthy foundation that helps boost your eyelash growth in general. These bbs are a good place to start:

What is the best eyelash growth serum?

If you’ve ever watched TV or opened a magazine, you’ve likely heard of a product called Latisse, the only FDA-approved eyelash growth serum on the market. It was originally formulated as eye drops to treat glaucoma (high eye pressure), but doctors quickly noticed another unintended benefit: its ability to grow longer, thicker eyelashes.
After a few iterations and ingredient refinements, Latisse was born, using the active ingredient called bimatoprost to help grow your existing lashes and stimulate the growth of new hairs in four to six weeks. Pretty cool, huh? The only little hurdle is that it’s available by prescription only, so you’ve gotta go to a derm or doctor to get it.
Which brings me to your next thought: OKAY, but what about the random eyelash serums my friend’s cousin keeps trying to sell me on Facebook and Instagram? And, ahem, right this way….

Do over-the-counter eyelash growth serums work?
Not to further complicate a topic that’s already complicated enough, but this question is a loaded one. If your friends have been using OTC lash serums and swear they’ve gotten longer, thicker lashes, it’s very possible they’re using a product that contains an ingredient somewhat comparable to bimatoprost.
“Some nonprescription lash serums actually do contain similar growth ingredients, such as isopropyl cloprostenate, but these aren’t FDA-regulated or approved,” says Dr. Haberman. So just because you can buy them from your mom’s best friend doesn’t mean these lash serums are totally harmless to try. As with any medication, there are side effects to take into consideration before painting your whole eye with the stuff, so always read reviews and ask your doctor or derm first.

Yes, no, and possibly. There’s a good reason (well, actually, reasons plural) why you need a prescription to get your hands on Latisse: It’s an actual drug (for glaucoma!), which means a doctor needs to make sure it won’t interfere with other medications you’re taking or have a negative effect on your eyes.
Does coconut oil grow eyelashes?
And you know all those rumors about someone’s eye color changing from using an eyelash serum? Yeah, that’s a possibility if you’re using a formula with growth ingredients. According to Dr. Haberman, if the serum gets inside the eye, those with lighter eyes could notice a change in the color of their irises after repeat exposure. In other words, your baby blues could end up brown if you’re not applying the product carefully, thinly, and only to your lash lines.
Other risks: A growth serum can also cause discoloration of the skin and/or irritation and puffiness of the lid if it seeps into your eye. Of course, like all side effects, these are possibilities, not guarantees—some people can use lash serums without any issues, but this is still a good reminder to always read the ingredients list and talk to your doctor first.
What should I avoid when growing lashes?
When growing your lashes, you want to avoid anything that can stunt or damage the hairs. So, you know, all the usual things that can damage your eyelashes: false lashes, eyelash curlers, and not washing your face.
Whaaa? Yep. False eyelashes might be tempting to play around with while you’re waiting for growth, but because of the adhesive and the weight, they could actually cause your lashes to break or even fall out, especially when you remove them. Meanwhile, being overly aggressive with an eyelash curler can also damage lashes by causing breakage and mechanical trauma. As for not removing your makeup, some people might develop inflammation around their lashes called blepharitis (yikes), which, if left untreated, can cause lash loss.
So, is it possible to grow eyelashes?
If you avoid false lashes, go easy on the lash curler, remove your eye makeup every night, strengthen your current lashes with a conditioning serum, and see your doctor for a growth serum prescription, then yes, it’s actually possible to grow longer lashes. But you have to be consistent and patient: These treatments take months to work, and once you stop, so does the growth, so it’s up to you if all the work is truly worth it.
How often should you put coconut oil on your eyebrows?
Today’s post is a bit different as it won’t be about you, but about me (sorry about that). It will be about me and my best friend coconut oil. It’s a fun one, so bear with me! Folks? Coconut oil for the eyebrows is true!
BACKGROUND STORY
I’m not good at committing myself to changes aka new routines, perhaps because my life is hectic as it is or I just tend to forget way more than I should. But if there’s one thing I’m specific about when it comes to my beauty life, it’s my eyebrows. They’re not Cara Delevingne or Audrey Hepburn, but they’re doing quite alright. As I’m guilty of existing during the wave of thin eyebrows, my eyebrows have been thinner than thinnest. (It should be somewhat a crime to pluck the eyebrows to non-existence). They have been growing back more than fine, though not as fine as I’d want them however. As I’m a huge fan of coconut oil (extra virgin organic coconut oil that is) I thought it was my turn to combine my two loves, coconut oil and my eyebrows. Here’s the thing:

COCONUT OIL FOR EYEBROWS
Coconut oil is somewhat famous for its many health benefits. Everything from serving as a moisturizer, to oil pulling, highlighter and soothing for wounds (find a long list here). It’s also known for stimulating hair growth, which is ultimate when it comes to eyebrows. But as with all beauty trends and cures, one doesn’t really know until you’ve tried it yourself. Even though it works for everyone else, it will remain pointless if it doesn’t work for you (being all selfish and everything).
THE NEW ROUTINE
So I decided to give it a try, apply coconut oil on my eyebrows every day for 30 days. This with the intention to get the tiny gaps in my eyebrows filled in a natural way to a low cost. And do it in an easy and smooth way, aka not committing myself to eyebrow improvement for hours a week. So here’s how I did it:
I bought a jar of extra virgin coconut oil to have in the bathroom specific and had a spoon for application.
I applied coconut oil on the entire eyebrow (not only on the gaps) once a day. I’ve not been consistent in when I’ve applied oil on them, doing both morning and nights and sometimes in the middle of the day (again, I’m not good at creating new routines).
So this is what I did for 30 days, one stroke on my left eyebrow and one stroke on my right. And I’ve not used makeup for my eyebrows on a daily basis. I’ve only had it for specific occasions.
And while we’re at it, I can just say that it’s easy to do this routine. It’s kind of foolproof. Literally having a visible jar of coconut oil in the bathroom is a great reminder. And as it’s only to be done once a day and it takes 10 seconds to do both of the eyebrows, it’s not a time issue at all. Like, no one is that stressed to not have time for it.
THE RESULT
Here’s what my eyebrow looked like before, it’s okey in thickness (would love them thicker though) but it has a few gaps here and there. Some spots are more thin than others and you can see them below to the right. And please! Do note that I have no makeup or done anything to my eyebrows in the before or after picture. Only coconut oil after 30 days! And yes, I know that some might not see what I’m complaining about in the first place, but I stare at these every. single. day. I see their flaws, where I’d like improvement. Where I want Delevingne’s magic to pop up!

And here’s the result after 30 days:
Coconut Oil For Eyebrows | The Fashion Folks
As you can see, IT DID HAPPEN. THE MAGIC HAPPENED. It’s an improvement, a small improvement but still an improvement. The crucial gap (by the start of the eyebrow) is filled! Well, of course it can do better (why didn’t Audrey Hepburn happen?!) and I’m still not completely happy with the bow and the end of the brow. But, it’s on its way. The improvement is happening. And 30 days might not be long enough (it hasn’t been hair there for years), so I’ll probably continue this for awhile. Perhaps it’s one of those things like moisturizing the face, it should be done daily. And for a good pair of eyebrows, I’m okey to give them their daily love as well.
THE PROS AND CONS
So here are some final, more structured thoughts on the pros and cons:
Pros
It’s cheap – A jar of coconut oil can be found in you local food store. Make sure its virgin and organic! And a jar that you only use for your eyebrows lasts for months and months!
It’s easy to do – Seriously, if I can do it anyone can. Have a jar in your bathroom and take 10 seconds of your life each day to care for the brows. It’s worth it.
It’s natural – No weird ingredients no one can pronounce nor spell, only 100% natural coconut oil.
It works – It does works. It’s not an overnight magic, but it finds its way.
Cons
It can be a bit greasy – Coconut oil is an oil and they get greasy. Doing this during summer was not my best idea either. It worked but it was definitely some occasions where the oil got everywhere.
It’s not a one time thing – It demands commitment (10 seconds lol).
More hair – As it enhances hair growth, the coconut oil finds the way to a larger area than only the precise stroke of eyebrow. You’ll see that more hair, that’s unwanted, will pop up and show up where you don’t want the hair to. Especially below the eyebrow where it’s common to pluck.
So that’s a wrap on my love for my eyebrows and coconut oil, and especially doing this in combination. It’s easy, cheap and natural, which is all I ask (quite a lot though) of a new routine that’ll help my beauty life. And as I’ll continue doing this, who knows, I might need to do another update post if the magic keeps on happening!
Folks, what are your thoughts? Coconut oil for eyebrows? Let’s chat in the comments!
How fast do eyelashes grow?
You can grow your eyelashes out with natural remedies like castor oil and by practicing good hygiene when taking off your makeup. triocean/ Getty Images
To grow your eyelashes, you can use a combination of home remedies and prescription medications.
Castor oil, bimatoprost, and removing eye makeup can help grow your lashes.
Lashes usually take two months to grow unless you have a condition like alopecia or skin cancer.
Visit Insider's Health Reference library for more advice.
If you want longer, fuller eyelashes, you can take steps to help them grow. "It is possible to significantly increase the length and thickness of your eyelashes," says Brett King, MD, a dermatologist at Yale Medicine.
Your eyelashes typically take around two months to grow. However, factors like genetics, health conditions, hygiene habits, and traumatic injuries can affect the growth of your eyelashes or cause you to lose your lashes.
Here are some steps you can take to get longer, thicker eyelashes.
Why won't my lashes grow?
Eyelashes typically grow much slower than the hair on your scalp. "Generally speaking, otherwise healthy eyelashes grow about 0.15 millimeters per day and are typically about seven millimeters long (beyond the skin). So, doing the math, it takes one to two months to grow a normal-length eyelash from scratch," says King. By contrast, the hair on your head can grow as fast as 1.1 millimeters per day.
Conditions that can affect eyelash growth or cause your lashes to fall out:
Poor hygiene habits: Wearing expired makeup, sharing your makeup with others, sleeping with your makeup on, and neglecting to clean your makeup brushes are some of the habits that can irritate your eyes and affect your eyelashes.
Alopecia areata: Often hereditary, this condition is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body attacks its own hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.
Trichotillomania: Also referred to as hair-pulling disorder, this condition is characterized by strong, recurrent urges to pull out one's own hair.
Blepharitis: This condition occurs when the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes get clogged, resulting in redness, swelling, and irregularities in eyelash growth.
Skin cancer: The eyelid is easily damaged by exposure to the sun, making it one of the most common sites for skin cancer, which can result in the loss of eyelashes.
Trauma: A traumatic event like an injury or a burn can cause you to lose your eyelashes, or they may have to be trimmed off after the fact to prevent eye irritation. Using heated eyelash curlers, or ripping out false eyelashes could also harm your eyelashes.
If you have lost all your eyelashes, King says the underlying reason behind the hair loss can play a role in whether or not your eyelashes grow back. For instance, in the case of alopecia areata, loss of eyelashes may last months or years, according to King.
What helps your eyelashes grow?
If you do seek medical or cosmetic treatment for your eyelashes, King says there are medications that can help increase the length and thickness of eyelashes. It may take a few months for your eyelashes to grow back completely.
You should consult a specialist to determine what treatment options are available to you and what you can expect. There are also several eyelash serums available over the counter, that can help you get longer, thicker eyelashes as well as some natural home remedies you can try.
Can Coconut Oil Lengthen Eyelashes
What helps eyelashes grow:
Bimatoprost solution: Bimatoprost solution is an FDA-approved prescription medication that can help increase the length, thickness, and darkness of eyelashes. "It has to be applied to the margins of your eyelids, from where your eyelashes grow," says King. You can expect to see noticeable results after eight weeks of treatment and maximum effect after 16 weeks, according to him. Some brand names of this solution include Lumigan and Latisse.
Castor oil: Castor oil can help prevent loss of eyelashes by reducing your levels of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), a type of fatty compound linked to hair loss. Castor oil also soothes inflammation caused by mascara and other eye makeup. Applying castor oil to your lashes can help condition the strands and thicken them.
A nutritious diet: The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a nutritious diet with plenty of protein, iron, fruits, and vegetables to maintain healthy eyelash growth. Vitamins A, B, D, and E are important vitamins for hair growth.
Healthy hygiene habits: Your eyes are extremely sensitive to irritation and poor hygiene habits can affect your eyelashes. Taking off all your makeup before you go to sleep, avoiding expired makeup, not sharing your makeup, and cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges regularly can help prevent inflammation.
Conservative use of eyelash products: Frequently applying mascara and false eyelashes, using eyelash curlers, or exposing your eyelashes to products and treatments that involve a lot of chemicals can damage your eyelashes. Instead, opt for a hydrating routine using castor oil or even petroleum jelly, for naturally healthier and fuller eyelashes.
Insider's takeaway
If you want to enhance your lashes, or if you have a medical condition that is affecting eyelash growth, you should consult your healthcare provider for treatment options. In many cases, it is possible to improve eyelash length and thickness with prescription medication. There are also over the counter products containing peptides and hyaluronic acid that may help.
You can also try home remedies like castor oil for healthier eyelashes. Practicing good hygiene habits and avoiding excessive use of mascara, false eyelashes, eyelash curlers, and other chemical products can help prevent damage to your eyelashes.
There are also cosmetic treatments, like eyelash extensions and false eyelashes, that can help you recreate the look of eyelashes in case you have lost all your natural lashes. You can also opt for these treatments to make your eyelashes appear longer and thicker.
Can you get permanent eyelashes?
As mask-wearing continues to be the new normal during the time of COVID-19, there’s no denying that the eyes have now become the focal point of the face.
So it’s not surprising that interest in eye makeup and over-the-counter eyelash treatments has suddenly skyrocketed, particularly for products and services that guarantee lashes that stay fuller longer.
Lash lifts and eyelash extensions are more mainstream solutions you may have heard of.
Eyelash transplant surgery is another method used to improve the appearance of sparse lashes. Unlike lifts and extensions, this procedure offers more permanent results, if performed correctly by a board-certified surgeon.
While having transplant surgery may sound intimidating, experts assure us that it isn’t as scary as it sounds. The procedure simply involves transferring hair from one part of your body to your eyelash area.
To further explain how it works, we tapped two board-certified plastic surgeons and a board-certified ophthalmologist. They shared pros and cons, and what to consider before booking a consultation with a professional.
Read on to learn about all the ins and outs of eyelash transplant surgery.
What is eyelash transplant surgery?
“Eyelash transplant surgery involves moving hair from one part of the body (usually the back of the head) to the eyelash area (upper or lower eyelid),” explained board-certified plastic surgeon Gary Linkov, MD.
“This helps guarantee a fuller and longer lash appearance,” he said.
While many consider eyelash transplant surgery for cosmetic purposes, Linkov said that those who have either experienced trauma to the eye area (avulsions and burns) or complications from tattooing infections also may be interested in the procedure.
Similarly, those who have genetically short (or scanty) eyelashes may be good candidates for the surgery, according to board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Riad Roomi, as well as individuals living with trichotillomania, a mental disorder characterized by picking lash hairs.
How long do transplanted eyelashes last?
Unlike lash extensions, which require constant maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks, Linkov suggested that eyelash transplant surgery guarantees more permanent results because it’s technically a form of hair transplant surgery.
“Results are as permanent as the hairs on the back of the head, which are generally lifelong, unless a rare hair loss condition develops,” he said.
However, board-certified ophthalmologist and oculofacial plastic surgeon Rona Silkiss, MD, FACS, explained that post-surgery, lashes will need to be maintained regularly. This is because they can grow long and may require trimming.
“The lashes need continual care after surgery,” Silkiss told Healthline. “Remember, the transplanted lash hairs are actually scalp hairs, which means that they can grow long in length, and in various directions.”
What are the pros and cons of eyelash transplant surgery?
Pros Cons
long-lasting results cost
real hair takes a while to see results
moderate success rate
pain and bleeding
potential infection
potential corneal irritation
Long-lasting natural results
Since eyelash transplant surgery is a form of hair restoration surgery, there are advantages associated with the procedure. These include:
It offers long-lasting results not seen in other eyelash solutions.
Lashes are made with real hairs instead of synthetic ones.
Surgical risks
However, as with any kind of surgery, Linkov warned that you should keep in mind some inherent risks. These include:
pain
bleeding
infection
poor aesthetic outcome
corneal irritation
Cost
Silkiss suggested that cost is another consideration attached to eyelash transplant surgery. The procedure is on the expensive side, and it typically isn’t covered by insurance.
According to Cosmetic Town Journal, the average price of an eyelash transplant is between $2,500 and $6,000.
Results take time to achieve
Silkiss added that this surgery requires more downtime than other lash solutions, which can be unattractive to people who want instantaneous results.
“Eyelash transplant surgery entails more downtime than a lash extension treatment,” she told Healthline. “Also, with eyelash transplant surgery, it takes a period of time for the lashes to reach their full potential.”
WERBUNG
Who’s a good candidate for the procedure?
Relatively healthy patients with no underlying medical conditioners are usually considered good candidates for eyelash transplant surgery. However, Silkiss said some individuals will want to talk to their doctor before exploring this procedure.
“Patients with autoimmune conditions that lead to the loss of lashes may not do well with surgery,” she explained. “Similarly, patients on blood thinners, or prone to infection, are also at greater risk for problems.”
What’s the procedure like?
To give you a better understanding of how eyelash transplant surgery works, Linkov explained that the procedure starts by measuring and trimming hair found on the back of your head.
Coconut Oil: for Eyelashes
These scalp hairs, he said, will be the ones used to create new eyelashes during the surgery.
Once enough hair is taken from your scalp, your eyelash area is prepped and numbed. Local anesthesia (lidocaine with epinephrine) is used to limit pain in your scalp and eyelash areas.
Then, the new eyelash hairs are inserted one by one.
Linkov advised wearing comfortable clothing for the procedure and bringing a family member (or friend) with you. The procedure takes between 2 and 4 hours.
What’s the recovery like?
After eyelash transplant surgery is complete, Linkov noted that it’s perfectly normal for you to experience swelling and bruising of the eyelid area for days to weeks.
However, he added, the back of your head (where lashes were taken from) typically recovers within days, without too much discomfort.
When it comes to your actual lashes, Linkov said people should expect the transplanted hairs to begin to fall out post-surgery. This prompts new hair shafts to grow over the course of 4 to 6 months.
“The transplanted hairs often will fall out with the crusts as soon as 5 to 8 days after the procedure,” he explained. “Most of the rest of the transplanted hairs will fall out over the next two weeks. The new hair shafts will begin to grow in the 4- to 6-month window and will continue to grow.”
Results from eyelash transplant surgery will become noticeable over time, so Linkov suggested that the results of the surgery are best judged after at least 12 months. It can take a longer duration of time for all the hairs to completely grow in.
Any risks or precautions to be aware of?
Eyelash transplant surgery does promise fuller and longer-looking lashes over time.
However, Silkiss warned that the procedure has downsides. One is its cost, and another is that there’s no guarantee of a successful outcome.
Additionally, since this surgery uses scalp hairs, the lashes will still require maintenance, according to Silkiss.
“These lashes must be trimmed and curled monthly, and may lead to ocular irritation,” she warned. “They may even grow inward toward the eye, leading to irritation and potentially corneal scarring.”
How much does eyelash transplant surgery cost?
Linkov said it’s important to remember that eyelash transplant surgery is on the pricey side, with the total cost typically starting around $3,000 and going up from there.
He said to keep in mind that most hair transplants are priced per graft, while the eyelash transplant is usually a flat fee — the graft count of an eyelash transplant may not be much compared to a hair transplant involving your scalp.
Other factors that can influence pricing include extreme attention to detail and the skill level of the surgeon performing the procedure.
Also, eyelash transplant surgery isn’t typically covered by insurance unless your hair loss is caused by a medical condition, such as cancer or trauma to your eyelid.
How to find a qualified eyelash transplant surgeon
Since eyelash transplant surgery is a very delicate kind of surgery, Silkiss said that finding a board-certified eyelash transplant surgeon is crucial.
“This is delicate surgery (close to the eyes) that has a moderate success rate even with the most experienced of surgeons,” she explained. “Finding a board-certified ophthalmologist, dermatologist, or cosmetic surgeon with experience in lash transplantation is always recommended.”
And of course, even if you find a reputable professional who can administer this surgery, Linkov recommended taking some time to ask your surgeon questions during your consultation.
Doing so can give you a better understanding of how the surgery works and make sure that you and are your surgeon are on the same page when it comes to your desired results.
“Make sure that the eyelash transplant doctor you choose understands its intricacies, and how to create the most aesthetically pleasing results,” Linkov explained. “Be sure to ask how many grafts per side are being considered and about the preparation of the back of the head for hair removal.”
You can use this online site to begin your search for a board-certified surgeon.
Are there other alternatives to eyelash transplant surgery
While eyelash transplant surgery offers a much more permanent result, Silkiss suggested you can explore other lash-enhancing alternatives before actually booking a consultation.
These include lash lifts, lash extensions, mascara, or enhancers such as Latisse (a prescription drug). These options should be considered first — before the actual surgery is performed — since they’re much less invasive, she explained.
“I strongly urge people to try the cosmetic nonpermanent solutions first,” Silkiss added. “Eyelash transplantation is expensive and variable in its graft success rate.”
Key takeaways
Eyelash transplant surgery may seem frightening at first. However, experts explain that this form of hair restoration surgery offers longer, natural, and more permanent lashes.
While permanency is one of the greatest benefits of the surgery, it’s important to keep in mind the downsides:
It’s a costly procedure not usually covered by insurance.
Lashes need to be maintained post-surgery.
The surgery runs the risk of not being successful.
Despite these downsides, people who’ve experienced trauma to their eye area or those who are genetically predisposed to having sparse lashes are encouraged to explore this procedure.
Be sure to seek out a board-certified surgeon to ensure the surgery is performed safely.
How long can lashes grow?
Some people are just born with naturally long lashes, and the rest of us are left furiously Googling how to grow eyelashes. Even if you're armed with the best eyelash curler and the best mascara on the market and your lashes still aren't looking as lush as you'd like, you're not out of luck: there are some products you can use to boost your eyelashes' length, volume, and curl.
The lifespan of an eyelash is anywhere from four to eleven months, but your eyelashes are only actually growing for about four to ten weeks of that timeframe. If you are weaning yourself off eyelash extensions, or if your eyelashes have fallen out and you are trying to grow them back, this growth cycle can feel like a lifetime. Here's the lowdown on growth serums, hacks, and tips and what works and doesn't.
Do eyelash growth serums really work?
Latisse is currently the only lash growth serum approved by the FDA. Latisse can lengthen the amount of time your eyelashes spend in the anagen (growth) phase, so they keep growing instead of falling out, leading to longer lashes. When you stop using it regularly, your eyelashes stop growing.

You'll need a doctor's prescription to get your hands on Latisse, and for good reason: Birnur Aral, Ph.D., director of the Beauty Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute explains that since Latisse affects hair growth, it's categorically a drug.
Consulting with your doctor is the best way to avoid some of the product's known effects and drug interactions, including the disclosed side effect of green or blue eyes turning brown if the serum gets in your irises. If that freaks you out, there are more options (including at-home remedies) that can boost your lashes length, volume, and curl.
Are lash growth serums safe?
You may know some people who swear up and down that an over-the-counter lash growth serum is responsible for their new long and luscious lashes, and this is where we get into murky territory. Most lash serums contain an active ingredient that is similar to, or derived from, bimatoprost (the ingredient in Latisse that stimulates hair growth). But unlike bimatoprost, these over-the-counter ingredients are not regulated by the FDA. Therefore, they cannot receive the agency's stamp of approval for safety, which puts users at risk.

Consider Rodan + Field's Lash Boost Serum. Last year, the company was hit with a federal class action lawsuit after customers claimed that the company failed to disclose the side effects of the ingredient isopropyl cloprostenate, a derivative of bimatoprost. Some customers claimed the product caused "change(s) in iris color, eyelid drooping, itchy eyes, eye/lid discoloration, thinning and loss of eyelashes/loss of eyelash hair, eye sensitivity, eye infections, and vision impairment."
Yikes. Just because your friends are promoting OTC lash growth serums on Facebook doesn't mean they're safe or effective. So if you're looking for a lower maintenance way to get healthy lashes, try eyelash conditioning serums.

8 Best Eyelash Growth Serums, and How They Work
What's the deal with lash conditioners?
Think of eyelash conditioning serums like hair conditioners: They don't directly cause growth, but they do moisturize and strengthen hair to prevent existing strands from falling out. If a growth serum like Latisse works by giving you new growth, conditioning serums work by protecting new growth.
Keep an eye out for an ingredient list that includes hard workers like peptides, argan oil, sodium hyaluronate, or hyaluronic acid. According to Dr. Imahiyerobo-Ip, "these ingredients act as humectants which bind water. They provide deep hydration to eyelashes and make them more flexible. By drawing water to the hair they also make lashes appear fuller and thicker."

How can I grow my lashes naturally?
There are plenty of natural remedies for slow eyelash growth floating around the internet, and these include household ingredients like coconut oil, castor oil, Vaseline, and vitamin E oil. But do they actually deliver on the long and thick lashes they promise? The answer is... sort of.
"These ingredients primarily function to coat the eyelashes, which gives the illusion of thicker eyelashes," said Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip. "By hydrating eyelashes, [these products] may also result in less eyelash breakage. However, these ingredients in and of themselves do not cause eyelash growth."
TLDR: These ingredients keep your lashes healthy and looking nice and full, but won't actually make them any longer.
What not to do when growing lashes
"Eyelashes can be damaged by some of the things we do to enhance them," explains Dr. Imahiyerobo-Ip. "Over application of mascara may damage delicate eyelashes, especially if mascara is frequently left on overnight."
So even on those nights when you're absolutely exhausted, it's important use a good makeup remover to completely wash off the day's eye makeup – otherwise, you risk tugging them out overnight. Other lash-killing culprits include improperly applied eyelash extensions, and even your trusty eyelash curler if you're using it improperly. You can certainly still use your eyelash curler, as long as you are mindful of avoiding overuse and cleaning it regularly to avoid nasty bacteria buildup.
You can also go ahead and skip those biotin supplements: while it's not dangerous or harmful, there's no clear evidence to show that biotin actually has a positive impact on hair growth. You're better off focusing on a balanced, healthy diet to foster healthy hair, skin, and nails.
Bottom line: The only FDA-approved way to grow your lashes is with prescription product Latisse. Lash growth serums can be risky, and eyelash conditioners hydrate and strengthen lashes to help them look lush and full without really affecting growth.

Protection against breakage
Coconut oil is known for its ability to prevent breakage.Trusted Source A 2003 study showed that coconut oil protects hair by reducing protein loss when applied to your hair before or after washing.Trusted Source While this study focused on scalp hair, the same may be true for eyebrow hairs when applied before or after washing your face, or removing your makeup. Reducing breakage could result in fuller brows.
Lasting moisture
Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that appears to be superior to other oils when it comes to hair. There’s evidence that coconut oil penetrates the hair better than other oils.Trusted Source Other research has shown that coconut oil also helps your hair maintain moisture by slowing moisture loss. This moisture can translate to stronger, healthier brows.Trusted Source
Kills bacteria
Your skin is home to a collection of fungi, bacteria, and viruses.Trusted Source There’s evidence that the medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil, such as lauric acid, have antifungal and antibacterial properties that can protect against harmful microorganisms.Trusted Source
Using coconut oil for eyebrows can protect the skin around your eyes from common skin infections, including folliculitis, fungal infections, and eyebrow dandruff.
How to use coconut oil for the eyebrows
There are a few ways to use coconut oil for your eyebrows. The method you choose comes down to personal preference.
A number of commercially available eyebrow serums contain coconut oil. Most also contain other nourishing oils.
Eyebrow serums often include an applicator or brush that makes them convenient and easy to apply. If using an all-natural product is important to you, be sure to check the ingredients before you buy, as some serums contain perfumes and other additives.
Organic coconut oil is inexpensive and available in most grocery stores. It’s also easy to apply using a clean finger or a cotton swab.
Here’s how to apply coconut oil to your eyebrows:
Dip a clean finger or a cotton swab in the oil, taking enough to cover the eyebrow.
Gently spread the oil over your eyebrow in the direction of the hair growth, making sure to also get the skin immediately above and below the brow.
Repeat on your other eyebrow.
Leave on overnight and gently wipe off any excess in the morning before washing your face.
Precautions and side effects
Virgin coconut oil has been shown to be safe for use on skin, including around the eyes.Trusted Source Allergies to coconut and coconut oil are very rare but possible.Trusted Source If you’re concerned about a reaction, test some coconut oil on a small area of skin on your inner wrist before applying to the eyebrows.
Even though it’s generally safe, you should still be careful not to get coconut oil in your eyes. A clean, damp cloth can be used to remove any excess oil from your eyes. If you do get some in your eyes, flush your eyes with water if you feel any irritation.

Do eyelashes grow back?
Is it natural for eyelashes to fall out?
As a child, you may have loved finding a stray eyelash on your cheek so you could blow it off of your finger and make a wish. As an adult, you might be less excited to notice your eyelashes falling out. It’s natural to wonder if they will ever grow back. But, just like hair on your head, eyelashes grow, fall out, and regrow again in a natural cycle.
Why do eyelashes fall out?
If you wear mascara and your eyelashes fall out excessively, you may be allergic to the product. Or you may be applying the mascara too roughly. Excessive eyelash loss can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
These can include:
alopecia areata
scleroderma
hyperthyroidism
hypothyroidism
lupus
Extreme eyelash loss can also be caused by blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids. Blepharitis can be caused by an allergy, infection, or trauma.
You may also experience temporary eyelash loss if you are undergoing chemotherapy.
If there’s a medical reason for your eyelash loss, your doctor may be able to treat the underlying cause. This can result in the return of typical eyelash growth.
If there isn’t a root cause for your eyelash loss and you wish to speed up lash growth, there are several medically sound ways to do this.

What’s the natural eyelash growth cycle?
The average adult has 100 to 150Trusted Source upper eyelashes and 50 to 75Trusted Source lower lashes on each lid. Each eyelash has a growth cycle that includes three phases:
Anagen phase
This is the growth period for each eyelash. This phase typically lasts from two weeksTrusted Source. If your eyelash falls out during this time, it won’t grow back right away.
Telogen phase
This is the longest-lasting phase, lasting four to nine monthsTrusted Source. It is considered to be the resting period before your eyelash falls out and a new one grows in its place.
At any given time, you can have eyelashes going through all three phases. The complete eyelash cycle can last anywhere from five to 11 monthsTrusted Source. It’s natural to lose a few lashes on most days, even if you don’t notice them falling out.
How can I speed up regrowth?
You can speed up eyelash growth in several ways:
Eat a healthy diet
Good nutrition supports eyelash growth, as well as overall health. Here are some nutrients that may help eyelash production.
Protein: Your hair is comprised largely of protein, so a diet high in this building block is vital. Protein provides the body with amino acids, which are needed to produce keratin. Keratin can help eyelashes remain healthy and strong.
Biotin: Biotin also supports keratin production. It’s found in many foods, including:
nuts
cauliflower
broccoli
kale
onions
whole grains
Fruits and vegetables containing vitamins A and C: Thesefruits and vegetables help encourage eyelash growth by supporting cell and collagen production. Options include:
dark orange and yellow fruits and vegetables
berries
avocados
Niacin: Niacin (vitamin B-3) helps improve blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating growth. Niacin is found in:
chicken
fish
beef
turkey
peanuts
green peas
avocados
Iron: A diet lacking in iron can cause many eyelashes to go into their resting phase at one time. Eating foods rich in iron may help prevent this. These include:
dark, leafy greens such as spinach
dried fruit
poultry
seafood
beans
iron-fortified cereals
Take multivitamins
You can supplement your diet with a multivitamin to ensure you’re getting essential nutrients. Although a number of brands are specifically geared towards hair, nail, and skin health, any high-quality multivitamin should do the trick. Make sure the one you choose provides 100 percent of the recommended daily intake.
Use over-the-counter lash conditioning treatments
You can find a range of eyelash growth serums and conditioning gels. These can be used alone or worn under makeup. Some types of mascara contain conditioners, such as lipid or peptide complexes, which may help promote lash growth.
Talk to your doctor about Latisse
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Latisse (bimatoprost) is a topical treatment used to enhance eyelash growth. Latisse increases the number of hair follicles produced during the active growth (anagen) phase. It can also lengthen and darken lashes.

How can I prevent future eyelash loss?
Small changes to your daily habits can prevent excessive eyelash loss. Depending on your lifestyle, you may want to:
Try a new mascara. You may be allergic to your brand and not know it. If you use waterproof mascara, try switching to a non-waterproof formula.
Grow Your Eyelashes with Coconut Oil
Remove makeup gently. Rubbing or tugging at your lashes, particularly when they are coated with mascara, can make them fall out. Using a gentle makeup remover and a soft touch can help.
Take off makeup before bed. Eyelashes coated with mascara are more brittle and prone to breakage. Rubbing against your pillow all night may also cause them to fall out.
Ditch the eyelash curler. These devices can cause eyelashes to come out, especially if you tug or use them while wearing mascara.
Carefully remove false eyelashes and extensions. These products adhere to your natural lashes with medical-grade glue. Removing the glue can take your lashes out along with it. Be sure to use a gentle, oil-based cleanser. Or let extensions fall off naturally.
The bottom line
Eyelashes follow a natural pattern of growth and fall out at a regular rate. Although this can cause concern, know that they typically grow back without treatment. If you’d like to speed up the growth process, there are several home treatments and lifestyle changes that may help.
If you’re experiencing any unusual symptoms and are concerned that your eyelash loss may be a sign of something more serious, consult your doctor. They can work with you to determine the exact cause of your eyelash loss and advise you on treatments. They can also provide information about topical medications such as Latisse.
Can I put coconut oil on my eyelids?
If your eyes burn, itch or feel gritty, you may have dry eye syndrome. This is typically caused by a low production of tears or low-quality tears.
Many substances and situations can cause dry eyes, such as the medication you’re taking, the time spent staring at your phone or computer without blinking, exposure to smoke or dry air, wearing contact lenses or aging. No matter the cause, it feels pretty terrible.
If you're stuck at home and social distancing in order to keep yourself and others safe, worry not — you can still find relief from your unpleasant symptoms. In addition to using artificial tears and ocular lubricants, you may want to try these at-home remedies with products or items you may have in your cupboard.
Eyelid Wash
One way to produce higher quality tears is to keep your eyelids clean. You can do this by using a gentle cleanser, such as baby shampoo, and rubbing a small amount between your fingertips until it becomes frothy. Simply close your eyes and gently massage the soap into the base of your eyelids, right by your eyelashes, and then rinse with warm water while keeping your eyes closed.
Pay particular attention to the areas with makeup or facial creams that could enter the tear film and potentially irritate your eyes. Follow the eyelid wash with a warm compress (see below) to help your eyes regain moisture.
Repeat this process morning and night to relieve dry eye symptoms.
Warm Compress
A warm compress increases circulation to the eye area and stimulates tear production. This method also soothes your eye irritation by releasing oils that may have accumulated in the glands of your eyelid, thus improving tear quality.
Instructions: Prepare a bowl with warm water. Then soak a clean, lint-free cloth in the water, wring it out and place it over your eyes for a maximum of ten minutes. If the compress cools down, soak it once again in the warm water. Do this several times a day for a few days until your eyes feel better.
Add Omega-3 to Your Diet
Those lacking essential fatty acids in their diet are prone to developing dry eye syndrome. Studies show that consuming omega-3 fatty acids may stimulate tear production and create quality tears that lubricate your eyes more effectively. Consider supplementing your diet with omega-3 fatty acids, which are naturally found in foods like salmon, sardines, anchovies, and flax seeds. Taking fish oil capsules or other omega-3 tablets also works really well.
Coconut Oil
Virgin coconut oil is great for those with dry eyes, as it creates a protective layer over the tear film layers, resulting in reduced evaporation. Furthermore, coconut oil has antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. All you need to do is soak a cotton ball in coconut oil and place it on your closed eyelid. Do this several times a day until your eyes feel better.
Increase Caffeine Intake
Studies indicate that caffeine may alleviate dry eye by increasing production in the tear glands. Just make sure you're careful when consuming caffeine, as it can lead to jitters, irritability and insomnia, particularly if you're sensitive to caffeine, or if consumed in high quantities.
The participants in one study consumed capsules with 200 mg to 600 mg of caffeine (or 2-6 cups of coffee), depending on their weight.
On the other hand, caffeine in some people may act as a mild diuretic, which means they generally pass more water, possibly making the dry eye worse.
Change Your Environment
You may need to change your environment to prevent or alleviate dry eye, as dry air, high winds, dust, smoke, pollution and air conditioning can lead to temporary eye dryness. Consider using a cold-mist humidifier and avoid sitting directly in front of air conditioners or fans.
Wear Sunglasses
When outdoors, particularly when it's windy, dusty or there’s the risk of high levels of UV exposure, wear wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes and decrease the chance of debris entering the eyes. Additionally, the front of your eyes has a protective layer called the conjunctiva, which can become red and inflamed when exposed to high levels of UV light or dust. Wearing good quality sunglasses will further prevent the eyes from experiencing those dry and irritating feelings.
Dry eye syndrome can cause another condition called photophobia, or acute sensitivity to light. By wearing sunglasses, you can further ease your dry eye symptoms.
More tips to prevent or alleviate dry eye symptoms
Blink More
By deliberately blinking, you stimulate the flow of tears which can help keep the moisture on your eyes intact. Though purposeful blinking may look unnatural, it's still worth practicing in order to get used to blinking enough throughout the day — particularly when staring at screens (computer or digital devices) for extended periods.
Reduce Alcohol Consumption
Drinking alcohol can dehydrate your body, which then affects the quality of your tears. Consider limiting your alcohol intake, or eliminate it entirely, and see whether there's a correlation between your alcohol consumption and dry eyes.
Stop Smoking
Cigarette smoking can double the risk of developing dry eye syndrome. Cigarette smoke is harmful to the eyes as it has more than 7,000 chemicals, all of which can irritate eyes. Furthermore, smoking can impact the composition of your tears.
If you're a smoker, consider quitting. If you're a non-smoker, avoid environments where there is an abundance of heavy smoking.
Drink More Water
Last but not least: drink more water! Staying well-hydrated is good for your eyes and is critical for manufacturing healthy tears, clearing out debris, blinking and seeing comfortably.
Make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of water a day for eye health, and of course, overall general physical wellbeing.
At-home remedies can alleviate mild and temporary instances of the condition. If the symptoms persist or worsen, contact The Dry Eye Center of Southern Eyecare Associates to speak with Dr. John Dragon.

Is it OK if coconut oil gets in your eyes?
It’s no wonder that coconut oil has become a staple in health and beauty products given its many proven benefits. From moisturizing and protecting your skin and hair to having antimicrobial and antifungal properties, the many benefits of coconut oil may extend to your eyelashes, too.
Coconut oil may help keep your eyelashes healthy, resulting in fuller lashes that can stand up to cosmetics and eyelash styling tools.
Is coconut oil good for eyelashes?
Human and animal studiesTrusted Source show that virgin coconut oil is safe for use around the eyes. Along with being safe to use in this delicate area, coconut oil can work double duty and provide benefits not just for your eyelashes, but also the skin around your eyes.
Stronger lashes
There’s evidence that coconut oil can protect hair against damage from washing, hair products, and styling. Though the evidence available all focuses on the hair on your head, it may in theory, also apply to eyelash hair.
Does this Work?? Using Vitamin E and Coconut Oil to Grow Lashes
Coconut oil contains fatty acids, mainly lauric acid, which appears to help coconut oil be more easily absorbed by the hair shaft, according to researchTrusted Source. This may be why coconut oil appears to provide better and longer-lasting protection compared to other oils.
One studyTrusted Source found that applying coconut oil to hair before or after washing protected hair by reducing protein loss. In regard to eyelashes, this may help protect your lashes from damage that could result from washing your face or removing eye makeup.
Protection against bacteria
Microbial organisms are naturally present on your eyelashes and have the potential to cause bacterial and fungal infections. Medium-chain fatty acids, such as those found in coconut oil, have antimicrobial and antifungal properties that can protect against them. Lauric acid has the greatest antibacterial activity of all medium-chain fatty acids.
Applying coconut oil to your eyelashes and the skin around them may protect you from skin infections, including folliculitis, which is inflammation of the hair follicles.
This is really good news for people who wear mascara. The microbes on your eyelashes have the potential to contaminate your mascara, especially if you use the same tube of mascara for more than three months, according to a studyTrusted Source.
The pilot study examined the microbial growth of two brands of mascara used every day for three months and found microbial growth in 36.4 percent of the tubes. They found various organisms, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus species, and fungi.
Fuller lashes
Coconut oil is able to moisturize and protect hair from protein loss and damage. Assuming that these benefits also extend to eyelash hair, this could result in fewer eyelashes falling out so your lashes appear thicker and fuller.
How to use coconut oil for the eyelashes
There are a couple of ways that you can use coconut oil for your eyelashes, including eyelash serums or virgin coconut oil applied directly.
You can find dozens of eyelash serums for purchase online or at beauty counters. Many of these serums contain coconut oil, along with other ingredients, such as essential oils and castor or mineral oil.
The benefits of using an eyelash serum is that it usually comes with an applicator that makes it easy to apply without making a mess. The downside is that they’re not necessarily 100-percent natural. They can also be pricey, depending on the brand.
Virgin coconut oil is available online and in most health food and grocery stores. It can be easily applied using a clean finger, an eyelash brush, or mascara wand. Disposable eyelash brushes and mascara wands can be bought online or at cosmetic stores.
To apply coconut oil using your fingers:
wash your hands.
take a small amount out of the container using your index finger.
rub the coconut oil between your two index fingers.
Close your eyes and rub the oil gently along your lash lines.
To apply with an eyelash brush or mascara wand:
dip a new brush or wand into a container of coconut oil.
carefully apply the oil to your eyelashes as you would mascara.
apply to top and bottom lashes.
use a cotton swab or pad to gently remove any excess oil from your lashes or skin.
Precautions and side effects
Coconut and coconut oil allergies are very rare but can still happen. Virgin coconut oil is generally safe for use on the skin and around the eyes, but you should still be careful to not get it in your eyes.
Using 100-percent organic virgin coconut oil is your safest bet, as other products may contain ingredients that could cause irritation or an allergic reaction.
Use a clean, damp washcloth to remove any excess oil from around your eyes. If you happen to get the oil in your eyes and feel any irritation, flush your eyes with water right away.
Coconut oil vs. castor oil for eyelashes
Just like coconut oil, castor oil may also have some benefits when it comes to hair, though evidence is limited to scalp hair rather than eyelash hair. Castor oil is a popular home remedy used for conditioning and growing hair and there is some evidence that it may help reverse hair loss.
Castor oil is generally safe, but coconut oil may be the better option when it comes to your eyelashes. Animal studies have shown that undiluted castor oil can cause severe skin irritation.
In 2017, a case report published in the International Journal of Trichology found castor oil to be responsible for acute hair felting in a 20-year old woman. Hair felting is a rare disorder of scalp hair that’s characterized by severe hair matting.
Takeaway
Coconut oil offers an inexpensive and generally safe option if you’re looking for a natural way to improve the health and appearance of your eyelashes.
Can I put coconut oil on my eyelashes overnight?
It's no secret that coconut oil has become a go-to product in the beauty community. It seems to be the super stuff that is good for just about anything!
Not only is coconut oil nutritious, it is also a miracle product for your body, especially as a treatment for dry hair and dry skin. Its natural properties hydrate and encourage growth in hair, and I recently found out that the same principle applies to eyelashes. So I got myself some virgin 100% organic coconut oil to find out what the fuss is about.
A few months ago I went and got my eyelashes permed for my birthday. My eyes looked glorious for the first four weeks, but then came the actual price I had to pay. My eyelashes became disfigured and dehydrated, then started to fall out. Now, nearly half a year later, they are almost back to normal. However, they are still not quite where they were before I made this terrible decision.
I read that putting coconut oil on eyelashes really helps them recover. So here I am, trying it out with hopes of coconut oil being as magical as everyone says it is.

Benefits Of Coconut Oil
So, 100% natural coconut oil is rich in fatty acids and proteins, which is what eyelashes thrive on. When applied straight onto clean lashes, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and provides nutrition and hydration for the lash. If the coconut oil is applied by the roots of eyelashes, it can penetrate the follicles and encourage growth. Best of all, it is completely safe for the eyes (unless you have allergies, of course).
Armed with this knowledge, I excitedly set out on my week-long experiment of putting coconut oil on my eyelashes.

How To Use Coconut Oil On Your Eyelashes
According to just about every source on the internet, all you need for this treatment is a tub of 100% natural coconut oil (make sure there are no added ingredients), a couple of cotton swabs, and a mirror.
Here are step-by-step instructions for applying coconut oil to your eyelashes:
Make sure your eyelashes are completely clear of makeup or anything else.
Take a small bit of coconut oil with a cotton swab and gently apply it to your eyelashes, just like you would apply your mascara.
Leave it overnight.
It really is that simple.

My Eyelashes Before Using Coconut Oil
As I mentioned before, I messed up my eyelashes by getting them permed about half a year ago. They are now almost back to normal, but I can still feel the signs of damage that it caused. My eyelashes have become coarser, and although the extreme fallout has stopped, I still lose a few lashes once in a while.
I have pretty high hopes for this treatment, so let’s see how it goes.

Day 1
After taking my evening shower, I got my coconut oil jar and a clean cotton swab. I wasn’t sure how much of the coconut oil should go on my eyelashes, so I ended up using quite a lot — a little too much, actually, as there were lumps of it staying on the lashes. I went ahead and used the residue on my brows.
I was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight the coconut oil felt on the lash. I couldn’t feel it at all by the time I went to bed.

Day 2
As I was using the coconut-oiled cotton swab in the same motion as I would a mascara wand, I accidentally got some of the oil in my left eye. My instincts made me panic, but my previous research said that nothing bad would happen.

All in all, my eye went blurry for about half an hour and then went almost back to normal. The next morning, it was as if the incident had never even happened.
Another theory tested successfully: Coconut oil doesn’t hurt your eyes! (Well, unless you have an allergy.) Apart from that, no other changes were noticed.

Day 3
An unexpected heat wave hit England and my coconut oil completely liquefied. This made using it for my eyelashes a lot easier, as there wasn’t any way I could pick up too much of it. When applied to the eyelashes, the coconut oil seemed to be absorbed much quicker too, so I would recommend using pure liquid coconut oil or melting yours safely so it's not too hot. This works better overall!

Day 4
On Day 4, I decided to break the rules and put on mascara during the daytime. I know I shouldn’t have, but I went to a birthday party. I’m only human!
After removing all the makeup from my eyes, I put a generous amount of coconut oil on my eyelashes, lash roots, and eyebrows. It actually makes for an excellent makeup remover if you don't have wipes handy.

Day 5
On Day 5, I noticed that my eyelashes had become much bendier and softer to the touch. I also hadn't had any fallout whatsoever.
In the evening, I applied it as usual: the top and bottom lashes, lash roots, and eyebrows (the latter just for fun).

Day 6
Tonight I was in for another super-easy evening application of coconut oil to my eyelashes, thanks to the heat wave liquefying it completely. I managed to get a little bit in my eye again, but found that the blurriness went away in half an hour, same as last time.
Apart from the softness and flexibility of my eyelashes, there weren’t any more visible or noticeable changes.

Results: My Eyelashes After Using Coconut Oil
I don’t think that a week of putting coconut oil on my eyelashes made them grow, but it definitely made them softer, more hydrated, and glossier, as you can see in the picture above. They even feel nicer to the touch.
Overall, I will definitely be using this coconut oil treatment on my eyelashes once in a while to make sure they get as much nourishment as possible. It doesn’t require that much effort or time, and the results are pretty good for a week’s worth of work. Oh, and I definitely won’t be doing any more perming.

What health benefits does castor oil have?
Castor oil is probably best known as an oral laxative. But it’s long been used by people all over the world for many purposes, including treating acne and inflammation, and reducing wrinkles and age spots.
It’s also a common ingredient in many beauty products, because it can add a hydrating effect to cosmetics without clogging pores or irritating skin.
How to use castor oil on your eyelashes
Before you purchase any castor oil, read the label to confirm that it’s pure castor oil. Castor oil that has been blended with other oils or ingredients may cause irritation, or not produce the result you’re seeking.
There are two types of castor oil that are used for beauty. The first is cold-pressed castor oil, which is clear in color. The second is Jamaican black castor oil, which is dark brown in color.
Jamaican black castor oil has developed a reputation as being the preferred choice in many beauty treatments. But both types of castor oil contain the same properties that may make them beneficial to eyelash growth.
A day before your first eyelash treatment, swatch a small amount of the oil on another part of your skin, like your arm. If you don’t develop any skin irritation, the oil should be safe for use on your eyelashes.
How to grow lashes naturally ✿ DIY for longer, thicker, fuller eyelashes
The best time to treat your eyelashes is before you go to bed. To treat your eyelashes with castor oil:
make sure your eyelashes are clean and completely free of makeup
pick up a small amount of castor oil by dipping a cotton swab gently into the oil
delicately run the cotton swab along the top of your lash line, taking great care to not allow any of the oil into your eye (oil that gets in your eye could be extremely irritating and should be washed out immediately with water)
wash off the castor oil in the morning with water or makeup remover
Is there any research to support using castor oil for eyelash growth?
There have been no scientific studies that prove castor oil helps eyelash hair grow.
There is evidence that ricinoleic acid, a chemical compound that makes up almost 90 percent of castor oil, might help reverse hair loss. A studyTrusted Source found that the protein prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) is present in high levels on men who have male pattern baldness, and is one of the factors that kept the subjects of the study from growing their hair back.
Another studyTrusted Source found that ricinoleic acid may help inhibit PGD2 and potentially help scalp hair grow back.
More research needs to be done to understand if ricinoleic acid can be used to treat other types of hair loss.
Things to know before you apply castor oil to your eyelashes
When applying castor oil to your eyelashes, be very careful that it doesn’t get into your eye. In the event that it does, flush your eye with water.
Castor oil is generally regarded as safe. However, some people may have an allergic reaction to castor oil. It’s best to test castor oil on a small area of your skin 24 hours before applying it to your face.
The bottom line
While many beauty products that promise to grow eyelashes come with a hefty price tag, castor oil remains an affordable and all-natural option.
Castor oil is also easy and generally safe to use. With a little bit of patience and consistency, you could be enjoying longer, more beautiful eyelashes with the use of castor oil.
Does coconut oil help eyelashes grow?

Seriously, is there anything that this naturally derived miracle substance can't do?
*pours bottle over entire life.*
While there might be other ways to get flutter worthy lashes, using coconut oil to stimulate hair growth is a more permanent, natural and cost-effective method.
But don't just take my word for it.
Here is what the experts have to say!
Is coconut oil safe to use around my eyes?

Are you busy rubbing coconut oil over everything from your bad hair to your empty bank account but hesitant to use it near your eyes?
I can understand why.
But while this may sound like cause for alarm, there's no need to worry!
Unless you plan on pouring the coconut oil straight into your peepers, according to Dr Travis Zigler, it is completely fine to use.
"Organic coconut oil is great for the skin around your eyes. It's pure oil, so it's safe," he says.
While it is great for external use, Dr Zigler also says people should be cautious to avoid getting it in their eyes.
Both human and animal studies confirm that virgin coconut oil is not only safe to use around your eyes but also beneficial.
As well as promoting eyelash growth, coconut oil is proven to rejuvenate and soften the skin around your eyes thanks to its moisturising properties.
"it's wonderful. It's not irritating, and it absorbs pretty easily," says Dr Zigler.
So, does coconut oil help your lashes grow longer?
eyelash growth coconut oil
It is a common beauty belief that coconut oil is a magical potion that will make your lashes grow beyond belief.
And while it does give you longer and fuller lashes, it doesn't work in the way you might think.
Coconut Oil for Eyelashes: Benefits and Serum Recipe
Coconut oil does not help your eyelashes grow longer; instead, it helps them grow to their optimum length.
"Hair on different parts of the body is genetically programmed to only grow to a certain length," Dermatologist, Nancy Samolitis, MD, told WhoWhatWear.
Read: 3 Key Steps To Naturally Thicker, Fuller Hair
So essentially, your lashes have a maximum length to which they can grow, and the entire tropical region's worth of coconut oil won't make them grow any longer.
However, our lashes rarely get to their optimum length before falling out and this is where coconut oil helps.
Strong eyelashes equal long eyelashes.
coconut oil help strengthen your hair and in turn help your lashes grow
So how exactly does coconut oil help strengthen your hair and in turn help your lashes grow?
Good question!
Most of the research centring around coconut oil and hair growth focus' on the hair on your head.
However, this same research can be applied to your eyelashes!
Read: Does Coconut Oil Really Work In Your Hair?
A simple explanation is that coconut oil is full of fatty acids.
These acids help to promote cell growth in your body. Therefore applying coconut oil to your eyelashes helps to stimulate hair cell growth.
Which then helps your lashes grow to their full potential.
A study conducted by the cosmetics of hair found that lauric acid which is highly concentrated in coconut oil, not only helps to protect your lashes but is also absorbed more easily into the hair shaft than other treatments.
This helps to strengthen your lashes by providing better and longer-lasting protection when compared to other oils.
Another study found that applying coconut oil to your lashes before bed will also help protect your hair by reducing protein loss.
Applying coconut oil before washing your face will also prevent your lashes from being damaged while you remove your eye makeup.
So in short, coconut oil strengthens your eyelashes, protects your hair follicles and prevents hair loss.
This makes your lashes stronger and able to grow to their optimum length as well as preventing them from falling out.
Ultimately blessing you with naturally longer and fuller lashes to rival any falsies.

Grow Eyelashes and Grow Eyebrows Super Fast 100% Natural Home Remedy | Eyelashes and Eyebrows Growth
Despite popular belief, coconut oil will not actually make your lashes grow faster.
According to Shari Marchbein, MD and board-certified dermatologist, there are currently “no credible studies linking the use of coconut oil to faster hair growth.”
Dr Marchbein told the online store, Hims that "most of the claims online about coconut oil are unsourced, with few articles bothering to link to real scientific data."
But don't be disheartened.
While coconut oil has not been proven to help the rate your eyelashes grow, it has been shown to prevent hair loss, and increase hair growth (just not at a faster pace).
Beat bacteria with coconut oil
Beat bacteria with coconut oil
Our eyelashes are full of naturally occurring microbial organisms.
While these organisms are entirely normal and live in everyone's lashes, these pesky little things often cause bacterial and fungal infections of the skin around your eyes.
These infections can create inflammation of the hair follicles, which, according to studies, can cause your eyelashes to fall out.
But don't panic, because once again, coconut oil is to the rescue.
The antimicrobial and antifungal properties of coconut oil help protect your skin and hair from infection.
In fact, lauric acid, (as mentioned above) contains the greatest antibacterial activity of all medium-chain fatty acids.
So using coconut oil daily will not only help to fight harmful bacteria, preventing you from losing your lashes, but it also helps to promote hair growth.
Longer natural lashes means you can cut down on your mascara use.
This is good news as the same infectious bacterias have also been proven to contaminate mascara.
Using contaminated cosmetics means you're in a constant cycle of being exposed to bacteria!
YUCK.
So you're better off focusing on taking care of your natural lashes than investing in top-shelf mascaras which you may be continually contaminating.
Why is coconut oil better than fake lashes or lash extensions?

While we're talking all things au naturel, you're also better off ditching your lash extensions and falsies.
Eeek.
I know, this sounds terrifying.
Growing your eyelashes with coconut oil: it really works and takes less time than you think!
But, eyelash growth coconut oil is the best way to get you there.
"Some people are very sensitive and even severely allergic to adhesive, period," says Dr Samolitis.
Meaning that even the priciest and best quality of falsies and eyelash extensions could be doing your eyes harm.
So the safest way to achieve dreamy lashes is to stop splashing your hard-earned cash on extensions, multiple lash lifts, or using a hundred coats of mascara.
Instead, apply coconut oil to help your natural lashes grow.
Choosing coconut oil over cosmetic alternatives will not only save you time, and money, but it will also protect your lashes from the damage caused by cosmetics and extensive procedures.

Unless you're a fan of blurred vision, it's essential to know how to use coconut oil on your eyelashes correctly!
According to Healthline, there are a few different ways to use coconut oil for eyelash growth.
While it is perfectly safe to apply virgin coconut oil directly to your lashes, you may still prefer to buy a lash serum.
There are heaps of over the counter lash serums which contain coconut oil as well as other ingredients to help make your lashes pop.
Some consider store bought serums easier to use as they usually come with an applicator.
(Personally I love the Nourish and Enhance Serum by Borboleta)
However, serums do tend to be pricey, and they may not be 100 percent natural.
Personally, I prefer to go as natural (and as cheap) as possible.
This is why virgin coconut oil has my vote.
Simply, shop your local health food store or supermarket to source organic virgin coconut oil and apply it with an eyelash brush or clean mascara wand.
Dip a new brush or mascara wand directly into your coconut oil and carefully apply the oil to your eyelashes just like you would mascara.
Apply to both the top and bottom lashes and remove any excess oil from your skin with a cotton pad.
If you're lazy like me and don't want to buy any mascara wands, or better yet, want to cut down your plastic waste, you can even apply coconut oil using your fingers.

While allergic reactions to coconut oil are incredibly uncommon, it is still essential to be cautious.
Especially where your eyes are concerned!
The best way to avoid looking like you've been caught on the wrong end of pepper spray is to stick to 100 percent organic virgin coconut oil.
And, obviously, avoid direct contact with your eyes.
Use a clean, damp face washer to remove any excess oil from your skin and lashes.
If you do happen to get some in your eyes, gently rinse it out right away.
