And it was not sullied with a sequel for 20 freakin years. And the sequel was good too! A few pointsThe setting is so surreal. It’s like an America that exists outside of time. Like what Americans in the 70s thought the future would be like.Strong female lead that doesn’t rely on “girl power” or constantly bring up the fact that she is a woman and people should be shocked that she can kick ass. Helen had her time as a hero and then just wanted to be a morher and a homemaker, you can tell she’s happy that way. But Bob goes and fucks it up to “relive the glory days,” and Helen puts the mask back on to save his ass when he gets in trouble. No quips about “I should be the damsel in distress!” or jokes about dishwashing or diaper changing. When she’s a hero she’s a hero. They don’t even give an explanation as to how she can fly a plane. No one ever asked how Bruce Wayne learned how to fly the batwing.The villain. Dear lord the villain. Buddy followed all of the little superhero sidekick tropes. He was legitimately smart and talented. And he thought his position as Incrediboy was cemented but Bob is not like Batman or Superman. He works alone. Because being a hero is a hobby for him more than anything. Synrdome’s lines and his voice actor are really great. And the twist at the end when he kidnaps Jack Jack. Who could have seen that coming? I also love that even as a villain, he wants to be seen as the hero. And also, Buddy is a comic book nerd who becomes a villain. It’s a satire of comic book nerds as they can be unsavory and overly critical.It is really dark and gritty. The attempted suicide scene aside, when Helen is warning the children about Syndrome’s henchmen, she says “You know the bad guys you see in your Saturday morning Cartoons?” Dash nods excitedly and smiles and she says “Well these bad guys aren’t like those bad guys. They will not exercise restraint because you’re children. They will KILL you. If they get the chance” WOW. It makes the kid’s interactions with the henchmen so much more high stakes. And the henchmen have legitimate sub machineguns. Not laser guns or blunt clubs no, Violet turns invisible, throws herself in a body of water, and these guys unload their magazines into the pond! It’s heart pounding! Also, Bob finding the CORPSE of his old hero friend on Syndrome’s island, and using it to fake his death. And then he discovers pretty much all of his friends are dead. Lured to the island by promises to be a hero again.Frozone. Didn’t even need Sam Jackson. That character is awesome. And there’s a scene where a cop threatens to shoot him for a crime he didn’t commit, and he freezes the man solid, along with the bullet he fires at him in mid air. Again, real freaking guns! In a pixar movieThe soundtrack. Maybe it just has some nostalgic factor for me since I saw this movie in theaters as a kid. But every song is a big brass band banger.The fact that the Scarlet Witch/Thanos/One Punch Man hero, the hero with so much power that it makes you wonder how anyone will best them, is not a main character, but a baby. The juxtaposition is hilarious. I want to see a dark movie with Jack Jack grown up, but not giving it to us leaves it to our imagination.I could go on and on.
