can vicks vaporub grow hair?

Stop Using Vicks Vapor Hair Treatment Until You See This Q & A!!

At the start of the year many of us are reflecting on how we’ll reach our goals for the year. While I of course have spiritual, financial and health goals, I added a new goal this year.  I want to get my hairline healthy again.  After I had my daughter in 2016 my edges thinned out and haven’t been the same since.

As a result, I’ve been researching oils, remedies and anything that I can find to help stimulate growth in my temple area.  That’s when I came across this craze of using Vicks Vapor Rub to regrow edges! Vick’s Vapor Rub is out here changing lives, I mean hairlines!

I know it sounds kind of crazy, but if you search YouTube you’ll find about 30,000 search results on this topic.

This woman claimed that it stimulated growth in her hair so fast that she had to get a relaxer sooner than she wanted!

"The ORIGINAL" Vick's Vapor Rub Hair Treatment - Part #1 Treatment For Natural Hair And Relaxed Hair

So before you decide “that’s crazy, I’m not doing that” take a let’s take a look at some of the ingredients:

Active Ingredients:

Camphor :  Camphor is used topically to increase local blood flow and as a “counterirritant,” which reduces pain and swelling by causing irritation. Note: It is important not to apply camphor to broken skin, because it can enter the body quickly and reach concentrations that are high enough to cause poisoning.  (According to WebMD.com)

Eucalyptus Oil : The health benefits of eucalyptus oil are well-known and wide-ranging, and its properties include being an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and stimulating, in addition to other medicinal qualities.

Menthol:  Menthol is either manmade or made from the extracts of mint oil. Menthol provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin or other tissues (such as the tongue, gums, or inside the cheeks).

After looking up the active ingredients, I can see how Vick’s Vapor Rub can help stimulate growth.  However, the key to using this product for hair growth is that you have to know how to use it.

Most people use it as a “pre-shampoo” treatment, applied to the scalp and and then allow it to sit for 15 minutes before washing out.  However, others use it as a balm and leave it on the scalp directly (as the woman mentions below).

This woman claimed that it not only grew her hair but also remedied her itchy scalp.

Pros & Cons of VapoRub For Hair Growth + Alternative Safer Options

Due to the strong scent and ingredients in Vick’s, I wouldn’t recommend leaving this product on your hair for prolonged periods. It could cause irritation if it gets into your eyes, as well.

Additionally, this product is petroleum based (you know the same ingredient that is used in Vaseline).  Therefore, I wouldn’t want to use this as an oil because it could clog your pores.  Nevertheless, if you use it as a “pre-shampoo” treatment in the same manner that you would a hot oil treatment, it seems like it could really be effective.  I’ve watched almost a hundred videos of women using this treatment and all of which believe it worked– so there may be something to it!  However I haven’t tried this myself yet so you’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s something that may work for you.

So what do you think?  Are you willing to try Vick’s vapor rub to regrow your hair?

There are a lot of hair loss products on the market and one of them is Vicks Vapor Rub. If you don’t know how it works, then you really should find out how it works before you use it.

This product has been used by many people all over the world because it’s effective in treating dandruff as well as treating various scalp conditions such as baldness. But does it work for hair growth? And do you really need to use it?

How to grow your hair with Vicks Vapor Rub

Let’s first take a look at how Vicks Vapor Rub actually works. One of the ingredients in it is menthol, which has a cooling effect that makes hair feel nice and smooth.

It also stimulates blood circulation, so more nutrients reach your follicle roots. If you’ve ever used a heating oil to grow your hair, then you already know how effective Vicks is at improving hair growth.

Before you use Vicks Vapor Rub, you first need to make sure that your scalp is completely clean. It helps to kill off bacteria that may be present on your scalp.

If you use an unvarnished bottle of this product, it will strip your hair of its natural oils. If you use it on an unvarnished bottle and then wash it with shampoo, you’ll only strip your hair of the oil it needs to grow.

Then use your fingers to rub it into your scalp and hair roots. You want to make sure that you only use enough to cover your entire head. Too much vapor rub can lead to burning and irritation.

If you use too much, your hair may become greasy and slippery. Be careful about how much oil you use. The best way to test how much is enough is to just rub yourself dry.

If you want to regrow hair faster, use Vicks when your hair is wet. The more moisture, your hair and scalp have, the faster it grows back. If you are using a cream to style your hair, rub it in.

Try to rub it all over your head. Don’t worry about getting it on your clothing. The cream will absorb into your scalp.

What is the impact of heat on hair?

Using Vicks Vapor Rub on a towel-blotted head and then rubs it against your scalp is a good way to stimulate hair growth. This works because heat opens the cuticles of the hair follicles.

The heat also promotes blood circulation in your scalp, which stimulates hair growth. If you rub the rub on your towel-blotted head, you can actually see the heat transfer from the towel to your head.

To learn how to grow your hair with vicks vapor rub, you need to first close your eyes. Then, apply the rub to the area of your scalp where you would like to grow your hair.

Start at the bottom of your scalp and work your way up. After you have done this for two or three days, you will start to notice that your hair is starting to grow.

You do not have to spend a lot of money on expensive hair loss treatments in order to regrow your hair. A good treatment is all you need in order to get your hair growing again.

The more nutrients you have in your diet, the better chance you have of growing healthy hair. The heat from your scalp’s natural temperature will help promote hair growth.

One of the best things about how to grow your hair with vicks vapor rub is that it has no negative side effects. Unlike many commercial products, there are no chemicals used, no steroids, and no ill effects.

Just pure natural ingredients. The heat penetrates deep into your follicles, helping them multiply and grow hair faster.

How to find Vicks Vapor Rub

You may think that it would be hard to find Vicks Vapor Rub, but it really does not take long to find reviews from people who have tried it. You can search on the internet for what is called a “vapor rub review”.

Keep in mind however, that not all people will review products positively. Some people may actually have a negative experience with a product because they did not use enough or used the wrong amount. Be aware of this when reading any reviews.

When you are looking for how to grow your hair with vicks vapor rub, remember to take into consideration the type of hair you have. There are different types of oils that will work best on your hair type.

Try a few different ones out to see which one brings the best results. Vicks can be a great way to make your hair grow faster without all of the possible side effects.

How do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair?

My husband asked me the day after our wedding, “How do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair?” My answer was not a whole lot and I didn’t think he wanted a long answer. He didn’t. But what he didn’t know is how potent Vicks is and that may explain why it’s not working for me.

When my husband asked me how do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair, I didn’t think about how potent it really was. I thought, if it stunk then I’d vote yes. I mean, it stunk. I didn’t expect it to be that bad.

I do consume it quite often because of how good it is when applied to the hair. When I would rub it in I always used the same technique. I would rub it in very gently and very slowly so that I could massage the oil into my hair. I always did my best to rub in a circular motion.

My husband and I used to enjoy the benefits of rubbing in the Vicks Vapor Rub every time we had hair salon treatments. And I still use it often.

But recently I noticed that I don’t need to anymore. I am noticing that my hair is getting dryer than usual and the Vicks is no longer effective on my hair.

Does Vicks Vapor Rub help your hair?

The Vicks is supposed to get the hair “hotter”. I did not think about how hot it actually is or why it should make my hair that much hotter. I only thought that I should mention this because my hair is now becoming thin.

It is also becoming less curly. So, if you have curly hair, I suggest that you discontinue the use of this product. If you don’t, you may find that your hair gets really wavy.

In the beginning when I was trying to figure out how do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair, I thought that I should find out what is causing my hair to become drier than normal.

Since I have been taking good care of my hair, I shouldn’t be having any problems with it. Well, I did find out that I was. It just took me a while to find out how and what was causing all of this. Once I did, I was able to stop using the product and my hair started getting really oily again.

Some people say that this product stinks. I have also noticed that when I am wearing my hair in an up do, it makes the odor smell a little bit stronger than usual. It seems like the more I use this product, the more I am going to notice that it is making my room smell a little bit worse than before.

All in all, I would recommend Vicks as a way to try to solve your hair problem. It worked for me and it may work for you. I would just keep in mind that there are some things you need to do to make sure that it works the way you want it too. If you follow these simple steps, you should be able to get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair quickly and effectively!

What you need to use Vicks Vapor Rub

To use Vicks, you will want to gather some ground up Vicks Vapor Rub. You will also want to spray this rub into your palms and rub them together.

After you have rubbed the rub into your palms, you will want to spray it onto your hair and rinse your hair after that. You may want to let the rubbing air dry for a second or two before using your hair.

If you want to know how do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair, you will want to follow these steps.

Finally, you will want to spray this rub onto your hair and rinse your hair after that. You may even want to let the rubbing air dry for a few seconds before using your hair.

These are the steps on how do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair. In conclusion, this rub can be very useful as an alternative to hair gel, hair spray, and mousse.

Although many people will tell you that this is not a product that you want to use on your hair due to it’s harshness, others will find that this product is exactly what they were looking for.

With a little bit of research, you should be able to find a way on how do you get Vicks Vapor Rub out of your hair without causing any damage.

Does menthol stimulate hair growth?

Is using a homeopathic prenatal vitamin supplement that contains menthol a good way to stimulate hair growth?

There are many ways to ensure that you’re taking the best possible care of your growing baby, and one of the least likely ways is to use homeopathic prenatal vitamins to promote healthy hair growth.

While there’s no real proof that using biotin or putting maternity pills in shampoo for hair growth causes faster hair growth, those types of products can certainly help you achieve that goal.

In fact, some women swear by the effects of these two substances when they’re trying to speed up the rate at which their babies grow.

The way that biotin and other prenatal vitamins work to treat hair loss is simple – they contain essential nutrients and minerals that your growing baby will need. In particular, biotin is highly beneficial because it helps to produce an abundance of the hair-producing hormone known as HGH.

Without an ample supply of this vital hormone, your hair will start to thin and even fall out. While it may take a bit longer for these effects to surface, they’re definitely worth the wait.

Vitamin E is essential

If you take biotin and other vitamins for hair growth pills, you’ll also need to ensure that you’re getting plenty of natural Vitamin E as well.

The skin and nails have a way of growing new, healthier nails and hair faster than they would without the vitamins. However, when they grow, the nails and hair get weaker and shorter as a result.

As you probably know, taking prenatal vitamins regularly is important for overall health. That’s why it’s a good idea to put biotin and other vitamins in nail polish as well. By having this vital nutrient in your diet, your skin and nails will be fortified with it.

However, your body will still need to work at providing these important nutrients to yourself as well. For example, you’ll need to consume foods rich in protein as well as healthy carbohydrates.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to give up your favorite pasta dish, you’ll find that it’s easier to stay fuller throughout the day if you do.

While you may think that it would be best to wait until after your pregnancy to start taking care of your hair, there are some benefits that you can begin taking advantage of right away.

Somebody stole from me! (Story Time) Payback Ponytail!

For example, the most common reason that women lose their hair during pregnancy is because their follicles are not able to sustain the necessary amount of nutrients. In order to get these nutrients, the body will need to consume certain vitamins.

As you likely already know, these vitamins come in the form of prenatal vitamins. These specific supplements are especially packed with the necessary nutrients that will help to make your baby thrive.

One of the reasons that taking prenatal vitamins can help hair growth is because they contain a special ingredient called folic acid.

This ingredient has been found to help improve the health of the nervous system and it has also been found to support stronger hair. If you want to maintain healthier skin as well, it will be essential to take these vitamins on a regular basis.

Of course, they don’t just stop at giving you better skin; they also help strengthen and tone your hair. You’ll notice that when you take a daily supplement that your hair begins to look healthier and thicker.

Conclusion

Finally, one of the ways that menthol stimulates hair growth is by causing your body to produce more human growth hormone.

Human growth hormone is actually an essential component of healthy skin and hair. When the human growth hormone is produced in higher levels, it can actually help your body fight off many common illnesses such as hypertension, anxiety, and even certain types of cancer.

You may be wondering how using menthol for hair removal can help you combat the many common conditions that affect your body hair.

Well, the answer is that as long as you continue to take these supplements, your body hair will increase in length and thickness. As your body hair grows, it will become less noticeable so long as you continue to take the growth enhancing vitamins on a regular basis.

Just remember that although using this type of product does cause your body hair to grow, it is not considered a growth inhibitor. What it does do is to stimulate the growth of your existing hairs.

Vicks for Hair Growth?

Many influencers and hair gurus claim that Vicks is great for hair growth. When used on spots with sparse growth and balding, it’s said to improve blood circulation. Vicks is also believed to combat dandruff, as the soothing eucalyptus helps relieve itching.

VICKS VAPORUB FOR HAIR GROWTH- DOES IT WORK? BEAUTYKLOVE

Like many other trends, Vicks has proven successful for some and has been a disaster for others. In any case, whether you liked the results or not, you’ll need to know how to remove Vicks from your hair.

Below, we’ll share a few Vicks removal remedies that actually work. Then you can get back to doing better things.

How To Get Vicks Out of Hair: 3 Easy Solutions

A young black lady standing in the woods with bouncy curls styled with several aromatic essential oils

Vicks contains ingredients like camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol. The rub has a thick, gummy texture that’s perfect for adhering to your skin.

Unfortunately, this thick texture makes it a hassle to remove. Below, we have three methods to get Vicks out of your hair quickly, each using ingredients you likely have in your home.

Method #1. Use Shampoo and Olive Oil

Olive oil is used by many to get stronger, shinier, and healthier hair. But did you know that it can break down other oils? This cool property makes it a great Vicks VapoRub removal remedy.

What you’ll need:

One cup of olive oil

A shower cap

Your favorite shampoo

Note: You can use regular shampoo or a clarifying shampoo if you’re an adult. If the Vicks is stuck in a kid’s hair (e.g., a toddler), you might consider using baby shampoo or more gentle shampoos. Also, it’s important to note that some people use baby oil instead of olive oil when working with a kid’s hair.

Here’s what to do:

Step 1. Add Olive Oil

First, add the olive oil to your hair and work it in from roots to tips.

Quick Tip: Why not pamper yourself and heat up the oil a bit before adding it? It will feel relaxing and give your hair a substantial shine boost.

Step 2. Put On the Shower Cap

Next, put a shower cap on and let the oil set in for at least 10 minutes. You can let it sit for longer if you’d like.

Step 3. Rinse Hair and Shampoo

When time is up, take off your shower cap and run water over your hair, squeezing out the excess a few times. After rinsing your hair, apply your favorite shampoo and lather.

Once it’s nice and worked in, rinse really well and repeat. Though two shampoo sessions should be enough, you may need to shampoo once more if your hair tends to be oily. You certainly don’t want to remove the Vicks, but end up with greasy hair.

Step 4. Style and Go

From here, you can dry and style your hair as you please.

Method #2. Dishwashing Liquid

Dishwashing liquid (e.g., dish soap) is a lifesaver in the kitchen. It helps to break down food and grease residue on your dishes and kitchen surfaces. Just like it combats tough grime, it can also break down Vicks, getting it out of your hair without a hassle.

What you’ll need:

Dishwashing liquid

Your favorite shampoo

Here’s what to do:

Step 1: Add Dishwashing Liquid

For this method, you’ll start by applying dishwashing liquid straight to the Vicks-covered areas of your hair. Use your fingertips to work it in. Don’t skip the massage, or else the dishwashing liquid may just sit on top of the Vicks.

The TRUTH About VICKS VAPORUB To Grow Edges BACK: DOES IT EVEN WORK?

Step 2. Rinse Hair

Before shampooing, you should rinse the dishwashing liquid out of your hair with warm water. Jump in the shower and make sure that all the suds are washed out completely before moving on to the next step. Massage your scalp as you rinse.

Step 3. Shampoo

Next, grab your favorite shampoo and work it into your hair. You might want to rinse and repeat for an extra deep clean, but you should only do it if you feel it’s necessary.

Step 4. Dry Your Hair and Style

From here, you’re free to style your hair any way you’d like.

Method #3. Baby Powder

Baby powder has multiple uses, one of which is absorbing oils. When you have Vicks in your hair that just won’t come out, you can use baby powder to soak it up and get it out quickly.

What you’ll need:

Baby powder

Paper towels

Your favorite shampoo

Note: You can use baking soda as an alternative to baby powder if needed. Baking soda is often used to remove cooking grease, so it works great as a baby powder substitute when combined with a regular shampooing session.

Here’s what to do:

Step 1: Sprinkle Baby Powder

Sprinkle some baby powder into one of your hands. With the other hand, grab a pinch of baby powder and begin working it into the hair. Add more if you can still see the Vicks but don’t add too much. Baby powder can be a pain to wash out.

Step 2. Use Dry Paper Towels

As the baby powder begins to work, the Vicks will turn into semi-dry clumps. Using a paper towel, grab the clumped-up pieces and gently pull outward to remove the clumps from your hair. You won’t be able to remove it all, so just focus on the bigger chunks.

Step 3. Rinse Hair

Next, hop in the shower and rinse the baby powder out of your hair with just warm water. Don’t stop rinsing until the water runs clear. Be sure to feel around where the Vicks was to ensure that it’s all rinsed out.

Step 4. Shampoo

Once you’ve rinsed out all of excess Vicks, apply your favorite shampoo and wash your hair. Doing so will give your scalp some extra love. Rinse and repeat to get the best results.

Step 5. Dry Your Hair and Style

Air dry and style your hair as desired.

Tips for Using Vicks in Your Hair

Cute young black mom sitting on a sandy beach with a head full of curls

Vicks hasn’t been professionally tested or proven to promote hair growth, but some swear by it. If you do decide to try it, there are some things you can do to avoid buildup issues in the future.

Before using Vicks in your hair, check out these tips.

Mix It Up

Vicks has a goopy texture that can be a pain to get out of the hair. To prevent the buildup of Vicks, try it with a carrier oil like grapeseed oil or argan oil.

To do that, put some Vicks on the tips of your fingers, add a few drops of the carrier oil, and then rub them between your fingertips to mix.

Use Sparingly

Another mistake that people make is putting too much Vicks in their hair. A great trick is to add just a tiny amount to the fingertips, first working it into your fingers and then applying it to your scalp.

Vicks has a very thick texture, so a little goes a long way. The less you use, the easier it will be to remove during your regular wash day.

Look for Alternatives

These days, there are all kinds of remedies to combat hair loss. So, instead of reaching for Vicks, use a different natural product that isn’t hard to get out of hair.

Try lavender oil, lemon oil, or coconut oil, all of which have produced amazing results and aren’t nearly as difficult to remove from the hair.

Vicks is a great product with a myriad of uses. If you’re going to give the Vicks haircare trend a try, keep our tips at your fingertips in case things go south.

If you’ve already tried Vicks and are dealing with a goopy mess, these tips will help you eliminate it quickly. We hope that this article has been helpful to you. Now you’ve got all you need to get Vicks-free!

Vicks Vaporub has been around forever and has been used to cure so many skin and body ailments. It has always been a popular household item. I remember when I was very young, Vicks Vaporub was always in the medicine cabinet and was brought out anytime there was an illness from congestion to soreness within and without the body.

My father swore by it when it came to a stuffy nose. He’d advise to place a small amount along the edge of the inner nostrils and that would open up your nostrils with such ease and comfort. Once place on the tip of your nostrils and inhaled, your breathing passage would clear immediately. This was like an instant cure! If I had a sore muscle, Vicks Vaporub to the rescue and the soreness was history.

Fast forward to today, via a youtube video that Vicks Vaporub was excellent for stimulating the hair follicles and promoted hair growth like none other. There were tons of videos on youtube pertaining to Vicks Vaporub and 99% promoted hair growth from using it. I was a bit skeptical but then I thought what could I loose.

The first time I place the Vicks Vaporub on my hair, my scalp tingled and felt heated. Of course this reaction confirmed blood circulation on the scalp and this would promote a healthy scalp and hair growth. A hair dresser in the recent past had burned out my hair by bleaching it completely white to add a brown color dye. My hair was so dry. It just broke off to the root. Also, I used to use ginger root and it would give the same scalp sensation as the Vicks Vaporub but was a little more messier to use and require more effort. Therefore Vicks Vaporub was easier to administer. After months and months of continually usage on a weekly basis, my hair begun to grow back at a much faster rate than before.

Vicks Vaporub is comprised of eucalyptus oil, menthol, camphor and other calming agents that have many purposes.

Sore Muscles — get reliefs with a refreshing cooling and calming affect along with increased blood circulation to the muscles.

Pet being territorial — place open container and it will deter.

Antiseptic benefits — got a cut, grab Vicks Vaporub. Spread a thin layer around the wound. This will help speed up the healing process and protects against germs and bacteria. A little stinging may occur but will shortly dissipate.

Shower Bomb — Provides relaxation during your shower. Place some Vicks Vaporub in the shower in a container and the steam from the shower will instantly clear sinuses and provides a refreshing aroma.

Skin Moisturizer — It restores moisture to dry and cracked skin. Especially effective on chapped dry skin. It’s simultaneously refreshing and cooling on the skin and increases blood circulation.

Cat’s Claws Repellent — apply a little VapoRub on the furniture and your cat will avoid the smell altogether. No other repellent required.

Skin Burner Healer — After putting the burn under cold water to soothe it, apply Vicks Vaporub to the burn to soothe the sting. Also, afterwards, adding cooking margarine promotes healing to restoring skin without any scarring.

Got Itch — Put Vicks Vaporub on dry skin to relieve itching.

Sunburn — Hot burned skin gets a cooling affect from the application of Vicks Vaporub and the redness will dissolve.

Stretch Marks — Skin gets a reprieve from the eucalyptus oil, cedar leaf oil, petrolatum, camphor, and turpentine oil, all together help stretched skin feel softer and increases moisture. Also, stretch marks are more faint than prevalent.

Chapped Lips — great moisturizer for lips, but don’t lick the taste is daunting

Cracked Heels — There is hope!! Apply to your heel, put socks on. Later wash off with warm water. For more softness, apply nightly this method.

Skin Infections Remedy — Apply Vicks Vaporub to the wound to prevent infection.

Acne — Put Vicks Vaporub on pimples or blemishes and leave on overnight. Next morning, wash off and pimple will be less prominent.

Bug Repellent — Apply a thin layer of Vaporub to the exposed skin and it will repel bugs with it’s strong scent.

Bruises Alleviated — Take a pinch of salt and dab of Vicks Vaporub and rub onto bruised skin. The bruise will dissolve and the skin returns to it’s normal state. Repeat often to completely alleviate the bruise.

Psoriasis and Eczema — Vicks Vaporub will reduce the inflammation and itchiness while it refreshes and makes skin feel smoother.

Earaches Reliever — Dab a small amount of Vaporub on a cotton ball and put in the ear for a few hours. Repeat several times in a day until earache subsides.

Headaches — Apply Vicks Vaporub to temple to help cool and relieve the pressure.

Eye Makeup Remover — with a cotton ball or pad, wipe the tops of your eyelids and around your eyes.

Above are just a few options or remedies that Vicks Vaporub have been and can be used for. I am definitely a supporter of all that Vicks Vaporub can do. The best part of Vicks Vaporub is that it’s inexpensive and is in most household, so it’s a win win or what can you loose but a little effort and time. Flip the coin, when it works, you, too, will become a believer. Please share with others and subscribe for more on how to live an easy effort life.

I have been natural since 2008 and in all my years of caring for my own hair and writing about the ups and downs of natural hair care, I have never heard of anyone using Vicks vapor rub on their natural hair until now.

We have had a few strange things that women swear by for hair growth including the infamous Monistat Vaginal cream which we have debated to death; As well as a variety of hair products and creams that have claimed to give increased and fast hair growth with a number of side effects.

HOW TO KEEP MY NATURAL HAIR STRAIGHT FOR 1 MONTH!

To add to that list, recently, I have been seeing videos on youtube with women trying Vicks Vapor rub on their hair and scalp for faster hair growth. When I did a quick search it seemed like the trend has been around for years but was recently popularised on youtube by one YouTuber who used it on her daughter’s hair to increase her hair growth.

She has 5 videos on the topic, and I will allow you to search for them yourself but here is a FAQ video she did recently where she talks about using the cough suppressant on the scalp:

My thoughts

One of the active ingredients in Vicks Vapor rub is Camphor and when used topically increases local blood flow which might be the reason you may see some growth. Vicks also contains Menthol and Eucalyptus oil which when used topically can also increase blood flow to the areas applied and create growth acceleration.

In addition to that, you will also see warnings that state not to apply camphor to broken skin because it can enter the body quickly and reach concentrations that are high enough to cause poisoning. Vicks also contains petroleum which is still used in the natural hair community by some while others avoid it like the plague.

Now that we have that out of the way, to be fair I have never been a supporter of quick fixes for hair growth especially with products that may have some side effects because they are designed for other uses.

I truly believe that hair growth it is a very natural process driven by your overall health and genetics. Vitamins, healthy proteins, fats, exercise are all safe and natural components that are directly related to the growth of your hair.

In addition to that, there are way too many natural oils that are extracted from natural sources that can be used as part of a healthy hair growth regimen.

I personally would not use Vicks on my scalp nor would I suggest that you do, instead, make a potent hair growth oil mix for yourself and use that to help with hair growth if you are really focused on seeing results. If you need a recipe click here!

Would you use Vicks Vapor Rub on your scalp? Comment below!

When I heard that ladies were using Vicks VapoRub to stimulate hair growth, I just had to test it out myself. I had to see what all the hype was about and if you could really get incredible growth after applying it to your scalp.

Lately, my hair has been hidden under a head full of crochet hair. I’ve had my hair in a crochet style since August and plan on keeping it that way until I see fit. However, before my latest install, I decided to apply the generic version of Vicks VapoRub (Walmart’s Equate version) to my scalp and hair line. After I let my hair air dry and picked it out, I applied the ointment. The minute it touched my scalp, I felt the expected cooling sensation. My scalp felt as if it was getting extra air (if that makes sense), as though a cool ocean breeze was running through my hair. I loved the feeling and I could tell that my pores were wide open. I probably should have done a patch test first, but even after sleeping with ointment on my scalp overnight, I had no negative reactions.

Once my new crochet style was put in, I noticed that my scalp felt a lot less itchy. I usually have an itchy scalp for a few days after I get any kind of protective style, but not this time. My scalp truly felt amazing and didn’t smell of Vicks. I know this for a fact because I asked my stylist if she smelled anything strong on my hair and she said no. This means that the smell must have dissipated overnight.

During week 1 of my crochet style.

Almost a week and a half after applying the ointment, I noticed that my scalp was a bit grimy. My scalp was getting dirty a lot sooner than it would have if I didn’t use the Vicks. I always used coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil on my scalp every few days, but that wasn’t what was making my scalp feel dirty. The only difference in my routine was the ointment. It wasn’t awful, but I definitely noticed. I wasn’t too surprised that my scalp was dirty because Vicks has petroleum in it, which in my experience, attracts unwanted dirt and debris. After realizing this, I wanted to wash my scalp, but I didn’t because I still wanted to see if Vicks VapoRub promotes hair growth. If I washed my hair, the water would naturally expose my new growth by swelling my hair and I didn’t want that.

After 3 weeks, I noticed that my new growth appeared to be a lot thicker than what I was used to at that stage.  It looked like my crochet style had been in for 6 weeks, not 3 weeks. I really wasn’t expecting such a drastic difference, but there was no denying it. My cornrows were super visible and the crochet hair looked pushed back.

How to Grow your hair in a week!! | vicks vaporub it works!!

3 weeks after applying the generic Vicks VapoRub.

Overall, it was exciting to actually see real results from my experiment. I thought the women who reviewed the product were either exaggerating or plain old lying. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were telling the truth. Vicks VapoRub can help promote hair growth ya’ll. I’m not sure if I would have had the same results if my hair was loose, but it definitely was a sight to see with my protective style.

Would I try it again? Probably not. I didn’t like the fact that my scalp seemed to attract dirt. I also realized that if I want to extend my hair growth journey, then it’s probably best to just mix up a batch of the active ingredients that are in Vicks VapoRub and call it a day. I’m sure I can get the same results with a concoction that is a lot more natural. Take a look at this recipe that I found below!

DIY: Vicks VapoRub Recipe

12 drops of eucalyptus, rosemary or peppermint

12 drops of lavender or tea tree

12 drops of fir needle, spruce or pine

2 tablespoons of shea butter

In a double boiler (or a stainless steel bowl set in side a pot of boiling water), gently melt shea butter. As soon as it is completely melted, remove it from heat and stir in the essential oils. Transfer the mixture to a container with a tight fitting lid and store in a cool area when not in use.

And there you have it! What do you think of my little adventure?

Vicks VapoRub to Stimulate Hair Growth: Does it Work?

Page Contents

Vicks VapoRub can stimulate and boost hair growth in both natural and relaxed hair. Yep. The creme your mom used to rub on your chest when you had a cold. The beauty industry is now using Vicks Vaporub to stimulate hair growth.

We commonly know Vicks Vapor Rub as a mentholated ointment, which suppresses coughs and reduce pains in joints and muscles. Now, people believe Vicks Vapor Rub will stimulate hair growth and regrow thinning edges. With so many new hair trends surfacing the market, let’s find out if Vicks VapoRub works for hair growth.

What is in VapoRub?

This topical gel is typically used to treat colds and congestion, but it’s recently blown up by popular beauty bloggers who swear it can lead to hair growth. Other small YouTubers have tried Vicks VapoRub and have also witnessed hair growth.

The first step to determine if Vicks VaporRub will work for hair growth is to analyze its ingredients.

There are four powerful hair growth ingredients in Vicks Vapor Rub: eucalyptus, camphor, lavender, and menthol.

Eucalyptus essential oil is added to the product, which stimulates your hair follicles. It’s also known to prevent dandruff and other ailments, relieve itchy scalp, sooth dry skin, and improve your hair’s elasticity!

Another essential oil found in Vicks is camphor . This is what provides that cool, refreshing sensation. Did you know that camphor can also improve your circulation? Camphor has antimicrobial properties that helps heal wounds, improves blood circulation, stimulate your hair follicle, and boost the growth of strong, healthy hair.

Lavender is also an ingredient in Vicks VapoRub. Using lavender can help improve circulation in your hair follicles, which is why it’s been utilized for years in the beauty industry.

The last notable ingredient in Vicks VapoRub is menthol. This ingredient is known to clear irritants from pores, which can allow your hair to grow easier. Menthol is also found in other hair products and is beneficial to your hair‘s overall health.

How to use Vicks VapoRub for Hair Growth

If you are ready to give Vicks VapoRub a try, here are some ways you can apply the product:

Try applying the jelly to your bald patches, troubled areas, or even you whole head. Massage the product into your hair follicles for approximately fifteen minutes. Once done, rinse your hair out with warm water then shampoo and condition your hair.

You can also mix Vicks VapoRub with olive oil, coconut oil , or castor oil to dilute the potency of the product. Simply apply the mixture following the steps mentioned above.

Best of all, you can apply this product everyday for the best results! Please not that if you have allergies or skin sensitivities to any of the products listed in Vicks VapoRub, it’s best to try a different homeopathic method for hair growth.

Does Vicks VapoRub help hair grow?

Vicks vaporub, commonly used for cough suppression or on muscles and joints for minor aches and pains might actually have more uses than you once thought. A popular natural hair remedy that you’ll see all over the internet is using Vicks vaporub to boost hair growth.

As part of our ongoing natural hair remedies series, today we’re focusing on Vicks vaporub and if it can actually help with hair loss.

What is Vicks Vaporub?

Vicks Vaporub is a mentholated topical ointment owed by the American pharmaceutical company Procter & Gamble. The intended use is for use on the chest, back and throat for cough suppression or to be used on micro aches and pains on muscles and joints. It has also been used to treat mosquito bites and should be applied immediately before sleep.

How can Vicks Vaporub help with hair growth?

Some people believe that Vicks Vaporub has some alternative uses, including boosting hair growth. It is thought that four of the ingredients in the rub work to stimulate hair growth.

Vick Vapor Rub Hair Growth Challenge Week 2 & 3

Lavender: Thought to be a good treatment for hair loss and improves blood circulation around hair follicles.

Camphor: Improves blood circulation in the hair follicles which is thought to boost the growth of stronger hair

Eucalyptus: Soothes an itchy scalp, prevents dandruff and is thought again to stimulate hair follicles.

Menthol: Thought to get rid of irritants allowing room for the hair to grow.

Does Vicks Vaporub boost hair growth?

Although some of the above ingredients do help issues such as blood circulation which can, in turn, help hair grow it is very unlikely that the application of Vicks Vaporub on the scalp can actually help new hair grow. The hair growth cycle will not change due to the application of treatment on the scalp, and because of this, it is unlikely for Vaporub to promote new hair growth.

Treatments such as Vaporub might be able to alter the appearance of the hair you already have or make the hair appear thicker and help with issues such as dandruff. However, there is no scientific evidence of it stimulating the hair follicles and resulting in new hair growth.

Have you seen or heard about the latest hair care craze (another word for crazy)?  Vicks Vapor Rub for you scalp! Girl Bye!  Well it’s not really a new thing but somehow or another it keeps resurfacing like an urban legend.  Ladies, one question…

Vicks Vaporub on natural hair scalp Curl Again Blog Post Use Hair Growth Scalp Balm

Do you really want to run around with that sticky tacky stuff on your scalp? Girl all the way bye!

Really ladies! I mean I get it that for some of us, you’re willing to try anything because your scalp is tore up from chemicals treatments, itching and flaking like crazy from fungal conditions, you got dandruff or eczema, and your scalp is just sore, tender and stressed from all this stuff.

Or, what about weaves, extensions and braids cutting off the blood and air circulation to your scalp? Could this be the cause of headaches?  What do you think that does to your scalp! Well let me tell you,  it traumatizes your scalp. Tightness and weight and artificial and unclean hair adds stress to the scalp by pulling the hair literally out by the root and can cause bacterial and fungal infections.  This is enough to give anyone a migraine!

Yep, that’s crazy.  But, can we just stop the madness for a moment and think about using Vicks vaporub.

You may remember Vicks as an old school remedy. You probably recall your momma rubbing the thick tacky ointment on your chest and back when you were sick. So, it must be okay right? Well, personally I always keep some on hand ‘cause you just never know when you need that extra little bit of comfort from coughing and congestion (and its such a little jar and it lasts forever right?).

Granted vaporub does help soothe breathing with its strong vapors, but my question to you is do you really want that sticky tacky smelly stuff in your hair…right above your eyes?!  Do you really want to walk around smelling like a menthol cough drop all day?

Besides, do we know what’s in vaporub?? Let’s look at what’s on the label of vaporub (in the picture above). The label shows the ACTIVE ingredients which make up approximately only 10% of what’s in the vaporub…it’s not all the ingredients!

These “active” ingredients are very aromatic and in their NATURAL state have been used for traditional healing and comfort. Let’s take a closer look. The number one active ingredient in vaporub is SYNTHETIC camphor which is made from turpentine! In case you’re not familiar with turpentine – you can find it paint thinners!! Nuff said, but in case you’re not convinced…

The camphor in Vicks vaporub is not the same as the essential oil which does have beneficial qualities include healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

The next ingredient is eucalyptus oil which is beneficial for blood flow, breathing, and inflammation. On the scalp, eucalyptus oil will stimulate healthy hair growth. But does it have to be in all that tacky petroleum jelly like substance?? I don’t know that vaporub is made out of petroleum jelly, I’m just say it seems like petroleum jelly – to me – otay?! Moving on…

Methol is derived from peppermint which is why it has that cooling soothing effect. Menthol is used in cigarettes as too….hmmm. I’d rather just have the peppermint please. Just saying. Studies have been done on menthol and its’ addictiveness and of course you have sides for and against the use of menthol.  All I know is I’d rather have that peppermint ladies!

I truly understand what these ladies are getting at by promoting the use of vaporub. They are looking for results and don’t know any better healthier alternatives to slow hair growth, bald spots and thinning hair. But there is a better way to faster hair growth and a healthier scalp and you can find it here!

At one point or another, we’ve all lusted for long hair—and really tried to take better care of our hair in hopes it’ll grow out long and luscious. Other habits include drinking gallons of water and taking supplements because, as we’ve all heard, they can reportedly make your hair grow out over time, but who actually has all that time or the patience? We all want instant results—or something close to it. That’s where hair growth hacks come in.

YouTube and Reddit are constantly populated with what we can only describe as weirdly effective hacks for hair growth you would probably have to really consider before taking the plunge. Most involve products that you would use in other parts of your life, so in that lies some familiarity, but we’d still encourage researching each one if you’re interesting in trying.

HAIR GROWTH CHALLENGE WEEK 6 / BEFORE AND AFTER PICS | I NEED YOUR HONEST OPINION

Ahead are 10 unusual hair growth methods that the internet can’t seem to stop talking about.

Vicks VapoRub as an Edge Stimulator

This topical gel is our go-to for congestion or a bad cough, but according to thousands of YouTubers, it also stimulates hair follicles, thus leading to growth. It’s also recommended that you massage the scalp after applying to promote further stimulation. Experts have yet to co-sign this method, but word of mouth says the results are legit.

Inversion Method

Basically, this means “hang your head upside down”—and many stand by this method that claims to promote hair growth. It’s believed that positioning yourself in this manner a few times a day encourages an increased blood flow to the head, which, in turn, helps the hair follicle reach its maximum potential for growth.

Shaving Off Edges

Are you convinced your thinning edges are past the point of no return? If you’re completely fed up, start over and shave them. According to many beauty vloggers, this is a time-consuming, but ultimately effective way to create a healthy environment where your strands can grow back longer and stronger than ever.

Placenta

It’s also believed that parts of the placenta—the organ that connects a growing baby to its mother’s womb—can also help your hair grow longer. And if you don’t have direct access to it, brands are now infusing it directly into their products, so you don’t have to jump through hoops to get it.

Wearing a Shower Cap to Bed

If you’ve ever gotten a deep condition at the hair salon, then you’re already adept to the benefits of heat on freshly washed strands. But, if you don’t have time for an appointment with a professional, some bloggers recommend simply sleeping with your shower cap on to trap the heat inside your strands. In the morning, this will leave you with stronger strands that can grow more quickly.

Monistat 7

According to ESSENCE, many women attribute this anti-fungal cream’s active ingredient, Miconazole nitrate, with stimulating hair follicles so they can grow at a faster rate. Most women are mixing the cream with an oil and using as a nightly treatment before bed.

Cayenne Pepper

Although there are now products infused with this spicy kitchen ingredient, it is believed that mixing it in its purest form with an oil is the secret to lengthening your strands. The tingling sensation you’ll feel is said to encourage increased blood flow to the root of hair follicles. But if you have sensitive skin, this probably isn’t the best option.

Scalp Massages

Although we rarely turn down a body massage, our scalp usually flies under the radar. Like all of the products we’ve mentioned thus far, simply rubbing your head a couple times a day also promotes blood circulation and more active hair follicles.

Baking Soda as Shampoo

Besides removing product buildup, it is also believed that baking soda’s antibacterial properties are so strong, it promotes hair growth relatively quicker than its all natural counterparts. Keep in mind that it’s also been tied to hair loss, so even if you don’t have sensitive skin, consult with a dermatologist before switching out your go-to shampoo.

Use Peanut Butter

Pull the peanut butter from your pantry and instead of spreading on toast, put it in your hair. Apparently peanut butter has tons of protein and alpha-tocopherol, or vitamin E, that makes your hair follicles stronger. Basically you warm up a dollop of peanut butter in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds, then apply into your hair thoroughly. Put on a shower cap, leave it in your hair for one to two hours and rinse out.

Now, some claim this really works, but the ladies from Refinery 29 tried it out and weren’t totally convinced. Guess you’ll have to see for yourself!

Now, we need to issue a warning to those who try to apply it close to their eyes: be sure to keep it clear of your eyes and any sweat or body fluid that may roll down and get into your eye. It can cause irritation or worse.

Other users in the comments claimed that after one week of use, they saw at least an inch of growth.

VapoRub is a topical ointment, part of the Vicks brand of over-the-counter medications. The company markets it as a cough suppressant and topical analgesic. Yet, there are dozens of off-label uses for the ointment.

Apart from cough and cold relieve, Vicks works well for other ailments … from muscle pain to headaches to nail fungus. It is also effective as a pet pee deterrent and mosquito repellant. As a hair loss solution, it has blown up on social media.

I TRIED THE WET LOOK ON MY NATURAL HAIR | VERY DETAILED!

YouTubers and other influencers swear by Vicks VapoRub for hair growth. Does it really work? The ingredients may hold the answer to this question.

Vicks VapoRub Ingredients

There are three main ingredients in VapoRub: eucalyptus, camphor, and menthol. A new formulation also contains lavender. All four are powerful ingredients that promote hair growth.

Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Advocates say it stimulates hair follicles and improves hair health. The beauty industry uses the oil for dandruff control and itch relief.

Camphor is a common ingredient in balms, liniments, and vapor rubs. Besides its analgesic uses, camphor improves circulation when applied to the skin. This helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles.

Menthol is the most notable VapoRub ingredient. It has significant benefits for hair. Some shampoos and conditioners use it to treat dandruff, scalp itch, lice, and damaged hair. Menthol cleans irritants from the pores so hair can grow easier.

A new VapoRub formula contains lavender, which also has benefits for the hair. Like camphor, lavender improves circulation. The beauty industry uses it in products that support hair health and growth.

How to Use VapoRub for Hair

Are you ready to give this trendy solution a try? To use Vicks VapoRub for hair growth, apply it to your trouble areas … bald spots, thin patches, or your whole head. Rub it into your skin and give your scalp a massage.

Avoid the eye area and wash your hands completely after applying the ointment. Leave it on your scalp for ten minutes, then rinse your hair with warm water. Follow up with your normal shampoo and conditioner.

VapoRub advocates say you can use this treatment daily before you wash your hair. If the ointment is too potent, you can dilute it with coconut or olive oil. If your skin is sensitive to Vicks ingredients, it is best to try a different homeopathic remedy.

Final Thoughts

Due to the product’s main ingredients, Vicks VapoRub can enhance the health of your hair. Proponents of this nontraditional treatment swear that your hair will grow, too. If you are struggling with hair problems of any type, give Vicks a try.

An unorthodox new way of purportedly tackling hair loss is springing up across America, where some black women claim a household item can help to regrow afro hair.

Vicks VaporubAccording to an article in essence.com, family medicine cabinet staple Vicks VapoRub is just the ticket for women with thinning edges – which is seen when hair is lost at the temples. The most common cause of this is the hair loss condition traction alopecia, which is frequently observed when women choose a hairstyle that places undue stress on the hair follicles. Among the worst offenders are tight braids, high ponytails, dreadlocks and hair extensions which place significant extra weight as well as strain upon the follicles.

Women also sometimes see thinning around the temples if they have the condition female pattern hair loss. This tends to be accompanied by thinning hair along the top of the scalp and at the crown, too as these are the areas affected by genetic hair loss in both women and men.

Can Vicks VapoRub regrow hair?

The essence.com article states that the awareness of Vicks as a potential treatment for thinning edges appears to have begun in March 2016 in Atlanta when it was first mentioned by a vlogger who goes by the name of Just Jocq on YouTube. She talks of one of her followers who mixes it with castor oil and coconut oil before applying it to the scalp and hair. Whilst castor and coconut oil are both beneficial to the condition of the hair – especially for people with afro hair as this hair type is naturally more brittle so can benefit from moisturisation – they are not capable of regrowing hair.

My Hair Grew Over 3 inches Using Vicks Vapor Rub on my Scalp!

Since then, other women with afro hair have been extolling the virtues of Vicks online, with some of them claiming that around one to two months will be needed before regrowth is seen.

Leonora Doclis, senior hair loss specialist at Belgravia, is skeptical – though she does understand where the claims about Vicks may be coming from. “It’s all to do with the menthol and eucalyptus which can be found in Vicks,” she says. “These ingredients won’t cause hair that has been lost to traction alopecia or female pattern hair loss to regrow, but they may help existing hair to grow in length – although we wouldn’t recommend putting Vicks onto scalps. Vicks contains petroleum jelly, which is not generally advisable for the scalp, although it shouldn’t pose too much of a problem if the scalp is healthy.”

Leonora points out that Vicks would likely give the same kind of sensation as Belgravia’s menthol cream or oil of wintergreen which are used in some tailored clinical treatments that take place in our Central London and City of London hair loss clinics. Though neither ingredients have been proven to stimulate hair growth, they can be beneficial to the health of both the hair and the scalp.

Tailored hair loss treatment

It is important to distinguish between ‘hair growth’ and ‘hair regrowth’ in this context. Promoting hair growth involves optimising or ensuring the normal functioning of the hair growth cycle. This applies to anyone regardless of whether or not they have a specific hair loss condition and is something that can be helped by non-medicinal hair growth booster products. At Belgravia we offer a premium food supplement for healthy hair growth called Hair Vitalics for Women which non-clients can buy online directly from the dedicated website hairvitalics.com. This highly-targeted product has been developed after extensive research by Belgravia’s hair experts and contains high quality, potent vitamins, minerals, amino acids and botanicals – including zinc, selenium, biotin and grape seed extract.

Those who do have an actual condition generally want to stop hair loss and encourage hair re-growth – this is a different proposition to simply encouraging non-affected hair to grow stronger and/or longer. Whilst hair growth boosters can certainly be used by people with a hair loss condition, these are considered an adjunct to pharmaceutical hair loss treatment, designed to maximise their hair’s potential in tandem with the relevant medications.

If women’s hair thinning or patchy hairloss becomes a concern, a specialist consultation – either in person or online – can provide an assessment, diagnosis, and – where necessary – personalised treatment recommendations. These are based upon the individual’s condition, pattern of shedding, medical and lifestyle requirements.

For women who have lost their edges to Traction Alopecia, Belgravia specialists use appropriate formulations of high strength minoxidil from those available at the in-clinic pharmacies. These solutions are applied directly to the scalp where needed, either once or twice per day, as directed. Although minoxidil is only clinically-proven as a treatment for female pattern hair loss, it is widely accepted to be useful in treating other types of hair loss in men and women by opening the potassium channels and encouraging localised blood flow.

Though results are not guaranteed, traction alopecia treatment at Belgravia often produces significant hair regrowth for women whose follicles have not been critically impaired. In cases where the damage to the follicles means they are no longer able to produce hair, treatment is not advisable as it will be ineffective. In these instances the hair loss will be permanent. This is why it is so important to be proactive if you suspect there may be an issue with your hairline. By taking advice early you can get all the facts regarding your situation and learn about the options available, in order to make a decision as which you are most comfortable with, whilst the decision is still yours to make.

There is a new hero in Hair Care town – Vicks VapoRub! Yes, people have started using Vicks VapoRub for hair growth. This medicinal salve, made with menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus oil, was created to relieve cold and soothe a cough. But people today are exploring its potential hair care benefits too.

What Is The Best Way To Boost Hair Growth?

Take Care Of Your Nutrition: Consume omega-3 fatty acids, legumes, nuts, green leafy veggies, carrot, beetroot, fruits, seeds, and dates for healthy hair growth.

Have A Hair Care Routine: Oil your hair once a week, shampoo your hair twice a week, apply a hair mask once a week, and comb your hair daily to improve the blood circulation of your scalp.

Reduce Stress. Stress can also prevent hair growth and cause excessive hair shedding. Take deep breaths whenever you are stressed out. Listen to music, take a walk, talk to a confidant, or seek professional advice. Adequate sleep is also recommended to reduce stress-induced body inflammation.

Tie Your Hair While Sleeping. Keep your hair protected from chafing on the pillow while asleep. Comb your hair, tie it into a braid or bun, and cover it with a satin cap.

Conclusion

There is no scientific evidence to prove that Vicks VapoRub stimulates hair growth or strengthens the hair. Proper nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and a good hair care routine using natural hair remedies can promote healthy hair growth. If you are experiencing hair loss or bald patches, consult a dermatologist. Relying on hacks that contain proven harmful ingredients like petroleum jelly and turpentine oil is not beneficial in the long run.

Does Vicks VapoRub help grow hair?

No, there is no scientific evidence to prove that Vicks VapoRub can help the hair grow. Those who have tried Vicks VapoRub used it with other oils and hair care products.

We’ve seen our fair share of wacky beauty trends and home remedies—from squiggle eyebrows to mayonnaise hair masks—proving we’re willing to give almost anything a try in the name of beauty. So when we discovered a bevy of Black women reaching for Vicks VapoRub (target.com, $4.99) on wash day we were definitely intrigued. A quick YouTube search of “natural hair Vicks VapoRub” and over 35k results instantaneously appear. The first video touting Vick’s magical hair growth properties was posted back in March of 2016 by Atlanta-resident Jocquelyn Hill, who goes by Just Jocq on YouTube. In a video titled “Awesome Tips & Tricks on How To Use Vicks Vapor Rub Part II,” a follow-up to her original post nearly a year prior, Jocquelyn explains several unexpected uses for Vicks, including hair strengthening and growth.

“Some viewers say they place it on their scalp and do a scalp massage, and that Vicks VapoRub on their scalp stimulates the hair follicle,” she shares. Jocquelyn goes on to explain exactly how one of her viewers does it. “She mixes Vicks VapoRub, castor oil, and coconut oil and applies that to her scalp and hair. She says she’s retained and received a lot of hair growth from mixing Vicks VapRub and those items,” she says. While it’s unclear if Jocquelyn’s tried it for herself, YouTube’s Black hair community quickly headed her viewer’s advice and began to use the unlikely hair growth solution for themselves. Videos by @MakeupMesha and @Kimera Yvonne have since received more than a million views combined in just under a year. In her five-part-series Sonya uses Vicks, along with a few other products, on her teenage daughter’s newly natural hair. In the video the mom is seen applying the cream directly to the scalp in small sections, pre-wash and condition.

What’s most interesting is that Black women across hair type and textures, including both relaxed and natural, are singing Vicks’ praises. In her video @MakeupMesha, who has a relaxer, hair growth is undeniable. In a four week update she proudly shows off inches of new growth which she directly attributes to Vicks. “My hair has grown like it’s been in full blown cornrows to the back. This is usually what I experience when my hair has been in a protective style for a while, this works pretty good,” she excitedly shares.

The average time reported by Vicks advocates to see significant hair growth is around 30-60 days. Patience and consistency seem to be the two most important ingredients, after the rub itself, to see results. In almost all of the videos menthol, eucalyptus and camphor, which are found in Vicks, are touted for the hair’s growth and stimulation. Menthol is a compound known to clear pores of irritants so that hair can grow easily while eucalyptus and camphor are both essential oil that stimulate the hair follicles and improve circulation when applied topically. However the petroleum in Vicks has some women weary of using it. “Because Vicks has petroleum in it, this is one product women don’t want to put on their hair. Me personally I don’t have a problem with petroleum, it’s one ingredient I really don’t have an issue with,” vlogger Kimera Yvonne shares. Asked if he’d heard of this hair growth remedy, Dr. Carlos Charles, a New York City-based dermatologist who specializes in working with people of color, told ESSENCE he had not. “While Vicks VapoRub is generally safe, a brief look at the ingredients list several oils that could potentially cause allergic or irritant skin reactions as with any topically applied product,” Dr. Charles warns. So although rubbing Vicks on your scalp and hairline may work it’s probably best to proceed with caution, as both the doctor and many of the women on YouTube suggest. “Don’t leave it on for too long and make sure you don’t have any open scabs,” Sonya reminds. While we have yet to try Vicks VapoRub on our scalp or hairline we can’t help but marvel at the ingenuity of our fellow sisters. Still intrigued? Below are a few of the most viewed YouTube videos of Black women using Vicks VapoRub to grow their edges and natural hair for your viewing pleasure.

VapoRub is a common item in every household. It is a mentholated ointment that’s used to suppress coughs and reduce pains in joints and muscles. However, people seem to use it for far more than that. As a matter of fact, some women are using it to stimulate hair growth and regrow thinning edges. So, Why Is Vicks VapoRub Being Used?

Part #6 The "ORIGINAL" Vicks Vapor Rub | Deja's Super Long 9 Months Hair Growth

Continue

According to Essence magazine, an Atlanta-based Youtuber, Just Jocq, posted about the benefits of Vicks in March 2016. After that, the trend started spreading widely with many women trying it out to see whether it works. The Vicks VapoRub ingredients that stimulate hair growth are camphor, lavender, eucalyptus and menthol.

Lavender – Serves as a great treatment for hair loss and improves blood circulation around the hair follicles.

Camphor – Improves blood circulation in the hair follicles which in turn boosts the growth of strong healthy hair.

Eucalyptus – Soothes an itchy scalp, prevents dandruff and stimulates hair follicles. Eucalyptus also improves hair elasticity and keeps it strong.

Menthol – Gets rid of irritants thus giving room for hair to grow easily.

Pros

Since Vicks VapoRub is also affordable and easily available, it is no wonder that women with both natural and relaxed have embraced it for hair growth. Some apply it directly on their scalp and massage it in while others mix it with another product or oil. Most of the women who’ve used Vicks VapoRub swear that it works.

Cons

Allergic Reaction

Vicks VapoRub is generally safe for use. However, it does contain ingredients that could cause allergic reactions or irritate the skin. So, if it doesn’t react well with you when applied on other areas of your body, you probably shouldn’t use it on your scalp.

It Contains Petroleum

Petroleum, one of the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub, creates a thick film on the hair shaft thus preventing moisture from getting out and most importantly from getting in. Because of this, some women prefer to stay away from petroleum-based products on their hair. If you’re one of them, you might not fancy using Vicks VapoRub on your hair.

Using Vicks VapoRub For Natural Hair Growth

Alternatives

If you’re a bit skeptical about using Vicks VapoRub to grow your hair, you can make your own DIY hair growth product. There are many recipes out there to guide you through the process. Most of these DIY’s use essential oils and might also include herbs and carrier oils. Some of the most effective essential oils for hair growth include rosemary oil, Clary sage oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil. You might need to do a bit of experimenting to find out what works best for you.

Lavender: Thought to be a good treatment for hair loss and improves blood circulation around hair follicles.

Camphor: Improves blood circulation in the hair follicles which is thought to boost the growth of stronger hair

VICKS VAPOR RUB FOR FAST HAIR GROWTH Q&A: DOES IT REALLY WORK? SAVE THINNING EDGES?
