1. Anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal

Cinnamon is thought to have many medicinal and soothing properties, and is used frequently in Chinese herbal medicine. The distinctive smell and flavour of cinnamon derives from the essential oils contained in the bark, called cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde displays anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.


2. May support gut health

Some spices, including cinnamon, have prebiotic properties. These bacteria may help restore the balance of bacteria in your gut, support digestive health and alleviate any digestive issues.


3. May help manage blood pressure

There is some evidence to suggest that the consumption of cinnamon is associated with a short-term reduction in blood pressure. Although the evidence is hopeful, it is early days and more long-term random controlled trials are needed.


4. Lowers blood sugar and risk of type-2 diabetes

Cinnamon has a reputation for helping manage blood sugar. It appears to do this by a number of different mechanisms, including managing the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream and mimicking the blood sugar management hormone, insulin.


Human trials are promising and suggest cinnamon may have a moderate effect on lowering fasting blood sugar levels in those with diabetes.


5. May be beneficial for the aging brain

Conditions like Alzheimer’s are more common as we age, and are characterised by a progressive deterioration of brain cells. In Alzheimer’s, accumulation of protein fragments in the brain act by slowing how a person thinks and remembers. Cinnamon contains two compounds that appear to inhibit the build-up of these proteins. Much of this evidence is derived from animal studies, so there is still more for us to learn with regards to the effects for humans.


Is cinnamon safe for everyone?

For the majority of people, cinnamon is generally recognised as safe when consumed as a culinary spice and in small amounts – no more than 1 tsp per day is considered safe for most adults, with less for children. In rare circumstances, some people may experience allergic contact dermatitis.


It’s worth remembering that most of the cinnamon purchased from supermarkets is a variety called Cassia cinnamon – this has a stronger taste and is cheaper to buy. However, it is high in compounds called coumarins, which in large doses may cause toxicity.


Ceylon, or 'true' cinnamon, has relatively low levels of coumarins and may be better tolerated.


If consumed in large amounts, cinnamon may interact with prescribed medication, including those for diabetes, heart and liver disease.

Cinnamon can irritate the skin if your skin is sensitive or if you use it too often, so don’t repeat this process more than twice a week. Rinse immediately if irritation occurs and stop using this face mask.




Nutmeg Variant

For a stronger face mask, add one teaspoon of nutmeg to a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir everything until you get an even paste and then spread on your face. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

Raw, organic honey

Ground Cinnamon

Instructions

Scoop 2 tablespoons of raw, organic honey into the mixing bowl.

First, make sure you're using the right ingredients.

Do us a favor: Stop staring at your pimple for a second, and do a little research on it. Dr. Patel explains that pimples are commonly caused by four things: follicular occlusion, microbe growth, sebum production (or adding oil to your skin), and inflammation.


All these issues can be addressed and helped when a pimple is early in the game. "The most common way to address these issues is to use benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, tree oil or salicylic acid products before you go to bed," says Dr. Patel.


Benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent that kills microbes and dries up oil in the follicle. Tea tree oil and sulfur also do similar things to benzoyl peroxide by drying up the pimple. "Using these products can make the pimple look smaller in the morning, " explains Dr. Patel.


Dr. Lamb also recommends using prescription topical products, if you happen to have any in your medicine cabinet. Gels that contain clindamycin, an antibiotic, or topical minocycline can make fast work of an angry zit.


But if you'd prefer to use products that don't require a doctor's note, Dr. Patel and Dr. Lamb both recommend trying salicylic acid first. "Salicylic acid products not only dry up the pimple and kill any microbes, but also exfoliate the skin on top to let any accumulated puss out of the follicle," says Dr. Patel. It's best to find a hydrocortisone cream that is hyaluronic acid-based because hyaluronic acid is a water-binding molecule that doesn't clog pores.


As you're treating, stay away from edible ingredients.

Products with coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil sound luxurious and healthy, but when it comes to acne treatment, they're only reinforcing the problem. Steer clear of edible ingredients if you're in the midst of a pimple crisis.


"If we can eat the product, bacteria and fungus can eat the product," Dr. Patel says, "and this could possibly make more pimples."

When you're in a bind, Dr. Patel prefers turning to spot treatments, which "work better for overnight fixes. Blister bandages or hydrocolloid patches work by pulling the contents of a pimple out versus topicals that dry up the pimple."


In case of an emergency, use cortisone injections.

If you have access to a dermatologist the day before your major event, it's true you can get a cortisone injection to immediately treat your zit. But make sure you're thinking seriously about the level of necessity.


"They are truly for a pimple emergency." says Dr. Patel. "Think a day before your wedding or prom-level of emergency." Steroid injections decrease inflammation of the pimple immediately but the side effects of steroid injections are skin thinning, lightning and possible indentation at the injection site. They are NOT recommended as regular pimple treatment.


If buying new products isn't an option, try a DIY treatment.

It's possible to stir up a great at-home acne treatment with a few ingredients in your kitchen. Try the following:


A small crushed up aspirin paste to a pimple helps with drying up the spot and inflammation.

Toothpaste—the opaque kind, not gel—can be used to dry up pimples.

Ice to a red pimple gives immediate blood vessel constriction and helps with redness.

Conversely, you can use a warm compress to bring a pimple to a head faster, explains Dr. Lamb.

Believe it or not, popping can be an option. Just proceed with extreme caution.

If you've exhausted all your options, nothing has worked, and you're hours away from walking down the aisle with a massive whitehead, it's finally time to consider popping.


Says Dr. Lamb, squeezing a zit is ordinarily a huge no-no. But if a pimple has a huge whitehead—and all its contents are visible at the top—you can use clean, gloved hands or cotton swabs to apply gentle pressure and pop.


The problem, she explains, comes when you pop pimples that aren't ready to be popped, or squeeze with dirty fingers.


"Squeezing them with non-sterile fingernails can lead to spread of the microinfection, more inflammation and scarring," explains Dr. Patel. So, in most instances, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Types of pimples marks

If you're trying to get rid of pimple marks, figuring out what you're trying to target in the first place is super important. Pimple scars are primarily of three types—first, the very tiny ones that can become flat, black scars (these are the easiest to clear); second, those which develop a white head (pitted scars) that go deeper into the skin and leave chicken-pox like acne scars (called ice pick, box car and rolling scars) and third, those which are very deep, cystic acne or keloid scars that leave raised, brown marks. All three kinds of pimple marks require a different approach.


Here's how to get rid of pimple marks

1. Medical treatments to remove pimple marks

Acne scars are best treated using medicated creams in the form of spot treatments, such as those with lightening agents like azelaic acid and kojic acid. Salicylic acid may help reduce swelling and inflammation in the area, which may minimise the appearance of scarring while fighting new acne at the same time. AHAs such as lactic, azelaic or glycolic acid help remove pimple marks as well, as they cause the skin cells to turn over fast, therefore bringing newer, even-toned cells to the surface while exfoliating the skin. If you're going the retinol route, it works in a similar manner, as they speed up cell regeneration. 


You can also sign up for microdermabrasion once a month at your dermatologist's clinic that gets rid of the top epidermal layers of the skin and reduces the intensity of the pits in the process. For ice pick scars, fillers may be able to help bridge the gap, while lasers can help to flatten keloid scars and eventually fade them away. 


2. Home remedies to remove acne scars

The best home way to remove acne scars at home is to scrub two-three times a week to brighten your skin on the whole—you will require topical treatments to lighten certain spots, if they are very stubborn. However, make sure you don't have any active acne in place as scrubbing can further spread bacteria and cause you to breakout more. One of the best home-made scrubs to brighten skin on the whole and remove pimple marks is to use a mix of gram flour (besan), turmeric powder, lime juice, milk and water, whipped into a paste. Apply this all over your face for 30 minutes and wash off. The lactic acid in the milk and the lime juice help to exfoliate and brighten, the turmeric looks after any persisting acne and the besan is the exfoliating agent that forms the base of the scrub. You can also use basic tomato pulp on your skin to reduce excess oil and brighten any dullness caused by prolonged acne and breakouts.


How to avoid pimple marks

When recovering from acne, avoid using anything harsh on your skin or squeezing any existing breakouts. Stay away from exfoliation unless done under the supervision of your skin doctor and skip waxing the area to avoid further acne. Don't irritate your skin by using harsh towels on your face and don't over-apply acne scar medication, expecting faster results. If you're prone to acne, make sure your skin is always clean, use a salicylic acid-based face wash, keep yourself hydrated and take all your makeup off before you hit the sack.

We’ve all been there! But while pimples are more complex than once thought, we don’t have to simply suffer through the red blotches until they go away by themselves. Here, we’ll look at how to get rid of pimples fast. But first…


How (Not) to Get Rid of Pimples

What are Pimples and What Causes Them?


1. Apply Ice to the Pimple:


The first step in calming down an angry, painful pimple is to apply ice. Wrap some ice in a cloth and press it against the inflamed area for 3 to 4 minutes at a time. If the ice melts too quickly, throw a few cubes in a plastic sandwich bag before wrapping in cloth. Repeat several times throughout the day to soothe the skin and reduce swelling.


2. Apply a Paste of Crushed Aspirin to the Pimple


Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which is super effective at removing excess oil and dead skin. Crush one or two aspirin tablets and mix with several drops of water to form a paste. Then dab the paste directly onto the pimple. This should reduce swelling and redness and also make the pimple less painful. Leave the paste on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm water.


3. Use An Over-the-Counter Acne Spot Treatment


When choosing a product off the shelf, you can narrow the choices by looking for two important ingredients found in many over-the-counter acne medications. Salicylic acid, mentioned above, is one of these. Another important ingredient to look for is benzoyl peroxide. In addition to reducing oil and removing dead skin cells, benzoyl peroxide also helps kill the bacteria that cause the pimples. While both these ingredients are safe and work in similar ways, which product you choose and how often you apply it depends on your skin’s own unique factors.

And, a word of caution: Both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide have a drying effect. Using too much of these products, or using them in combination with certain other products, can irritate the skin1. Only preparations containing 0.5 to 2% salicylic acid are recommended. Moreover, when using benzoyl peroxide, sun exposure should be limited. This means tanning beds, too. Go slowly when trying any new product, and avoid using more than is needed.


4. Use Makeup with Salicylic Acid to Conceal Pimples


We can’t just hide inside because we have pimples. Fortunately, there are several makeup products available that can help us safely cover up blemishes while simultaneously combatting them. As with the acne spot treatments mentioned above, there are a few key words to look for in the labeling on products such as foundation, face powder, and concealers.


Ingredients in Makeup for Acne-Prone Skin: Makeup for acne-prone skin usually contains similar ingredients found in over-the-counter treatments; one of the most common of these is salicylic acid. Acne-fighting  foundations with salicylic acid offer natural-looking coverage for your pimples while treating existing acne and preventing new outbreaks. Neutrogena, E.L. F., and Clinique, are just a few major brands that offer these formulations. Other common ingredients to look for are sulfur, which, like salicylic acid, reduces oil and unclogs pores, and hyaluronic acid, which combats the drying effect of other ingredients and keeps moisture in the skin.  As with spot treatments, however, you’ll need to consider your skin type when choosing which product to use. If your skin is already dry, you may want to focus on products that keep pores clear without drying out your skin.


Top Term to Look for in Acne-Fighting Makeup: In choosing makeup to cover pimples or to keep skin clear when pimples have abated, one property you should always look for on the label is noncomedogenic. Medically speaking, a pimple is a “comedo (plural, comedones),” meaning a clogged pore. Products likely to clog pores, such as certain oils, are “comedogenic,” and those that don’t clog pores are “noncomedogenic.” Fortunately, with so many products to choose from, you should be able to find one that is suitable for your skin. Other terms to look for are hypoallergenic, which may help with sensitive skin, and “clinically tested” for products that have been tested by dermatologists before coming to market.


5. Apply a Face Mask for Acne


There are a ton of face masks on the market these days, and many of them target pimples. Again, you’ll see  ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which treat the acne directly by unclogging pores and reducing inflammation. Another ingredient that works in a similar way is sulfur. Sulfur may bring to mind match heads, hot springs, and the strong smell of eggs, but it is also used to treat pimples, especially milder outbreaks, and is often found in face masks. Sulfur is gentler than salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide and may be a better choice if you have sensitive skin.


In choosing a face mask for acne, other key words to look for are “exfoliating” and anti-inflammatory.” Depending on your skin type, you can also choose among products that are “calming,” “hydrating,” “soothing,” or that “detox” your skin and have “antioxidant” or “antibacterial” properties.  All face masks have different formulations that help to offset the drying effects of the acne-fighting ingredients and soothe the skin. Many use botanicals such as tea tree oil or green tea, both of which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

If you search online, you may find different recipes for masks and other spot treatments that combine honey and cinnamon. Some people swear these ingredients clear their skin. Popular beauty blogger and vlogger Michelle Phan offers up a simple cinnamon and honey mask on her website.


You’ll need three tablespoons of manuka honey and one tablespoon of true cinnamon to make this mask.


Simply mix together the two ingredients, microwave for 30 seconds, make sure it’s not too hot, and then paint the mixture on your face. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse off and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

If cinnamon and honey or other home remedies don’t work to clear up your pimples, you may want to see your primary doctor or a dermatologist. At your appointment, your doctor will examine your skin, ask about your lifestyle and family acne history, and inquire about any at-home and over-the-counter (OTC) remedies you’ve been using.


There are a variety of topical and oral medications that can help soothe your skin. You may even be able to try different therapies, such as chemical peels, laser and light treatments, or extractions, to supplement your treatment.


The methods used to treat acne are divided into three main categories: oral medications, topical medications, and other therapies that can treat both breakouts and acne scarring.


Topical medications

Treatments you put directly to your skin may not appear to work until a few weeks after you start them. You usually apply topical medications 15 minutes after you wash and dry your face. Instructions vary depending on your doctor and the severity of your acne. Side effects can include dryness, redness, or irritation on the affected skin.


Common options are:


retinoids, such as tretinoin (Avita)

antibiotics, often combined with benzoyl peroxide, such as benzoyl peroxide-clindamycin (BenzaClin)

antibiotics paired with anti-inflammatories, such as dapsone (Aczone)

Oral medications

Some doctors may recommend using oral medications alone or together with topical treatments.


Common options are:


antibiotics, such as minocycline

A reviewTrusted Source published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine found that honey contains enzymes that create hydrogen peroxide, which has antimicrobial properties.


However, not all honey types have this property. An example is Manuka honey. However, Manuka honey still displays antimicrobial effects because it has a low pH level and high sugar content.


An article published in the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infection found that some types of honey from Iran had as much antimicrobial activity as certain antibiotics. However, the study’s authors pointed out honey hasn’t been studied as widely for its ability to kill the P. acnes bacteria that tend to thrive in pimples.


Like many natural treatments, honey and cinnamon as a skincare remedy hasn’t been widely researched. People seeing a dermatologist for their acne should always check with them before using the cinnamon and acne mask to ensure it won’t affect current treatments used.


How to make a face mask

Some people who opt to make a face mask with cinnamon and honey will leave it on their skin for 30 minutes.

Others will use the mask as more of a “spot treatment,” applying it as a paste to pimples and acne blemishes. The options are truly up to the user, their skin concerns, and their skin type.


People intending to make a face mask can take the following steps:


Gather 2 tablespoons of honey and mix it with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon until it forms a paste-like substance.
