Rinse and strain your rice to remove any dirt or impurities that you don’t want to apply to your hair.

Mix the strained rice in a medium-sized bowl with the water. You should mix until the water becomes pretty cloudy.

Strain the rice, this time reserving the water. Store the rice for later, or cook it up!

Put the rice water in a plastic container and cover it. Let the rice water sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours. This allows it to ferment and all of the yummy vitamins and minerals to come out. Tip: Don’t let it sit for over 24 hours. I let my first batch of rice water sit for two days (I had forgotten to take it into the shower with me), and it went bad.

Refrigerate the rice water until you’re ready to use it.

Fill a small container, like a travel-sized shampoo bottle or a small jar, with rice water for application. Keep the rest in your fridge.

It’s not easy to blindly dump rice water out of a big container and onto your hair (I know, I tried it). Just don’t forget to take the small container out of the shower and back to the fridge when you’re done!


The rice water should keep in the fridge for up to a week, so you have plenty of time to reap the awesome hair benefits.


How to use it:


You won’t need to change your washing schedule around your rice water rinse — simply use it after shampooing and conditioning, whether that’s once a day or once a week.


When applying the rice water, try to really focus in on your scalp and work your way out. Let it sit for two to five minutes, and then rinse. You’ll probably notice immediately how strong and thick your hair feels.

Here’s my experience using a rice water rinse.


After one minute: My hair already felt different. It seemed to have some sort of outer coating, or a thin shell, around each strand, protecting my hair as I brushed through it. Usually my hair is breaking as I work my detangling brush through my hair. But this time, my hair held its own.


After one day: The morning after my first rice water rinse, my best friend told me that my hair looked brighter and blonder.


After one week (approximately four washes): My hair felt thicker, fuller, and more manageable. I experimented with blow-drying my hair, which I NEVER do because of the instant broken flyaways that usually frame my head immediately afterwards.


This time? Little to no noticeable breakage. My hair was still extremely soft, but not in a feathery, light way — in a fuller and more noticeable way, like I had developed a partial mane. The battle with my hair has been ongoing for years. After cutting off all my relaxed ends and *officially* going natural in 2017, I’ve been in a constant state of trial and error with learning how to take care of my hair. Usually, I keep it in a protective style—either braids, twists, or a sew-in—but after all that pulling and manipulating, it’s necessary to let my hair breath to keep it healthy. Even though I enjoy being able to touch and feel my hair in its natural state, those times in between styles are the biggest pain in my you-know-what.

I’ve tried too many different products and regimens to count in the hopes that my hair will behave and grow. Some have worked better than others, but nothing has yielded results quite like a rice-water treatment. Rice water is exactly what it sounds like: water that is used to soak rice. The water absorbs the leftover nutrients from the rice after it’s been fermented—that’s what makes the water so special. It acts as a liquid protein treatment that can quickly penetrate your hair and scalp, resulting in additional growth and curl restoration almost overnight.

To see if I could achieve these types of impressive results for myself, I started using the rice-water treatment to rinse out my conditioner for five consecutive days. I would leave it in for about 2025 minutes, and afterwards I would use the remaining water as a hair spritz once a day. I’ve since transitioned into only doing the treatment every two weeks as part of my normal wash-day routine. Within the first three days, I noticed how much my curl pattern was revived as my semi-heat-damaged ends were replaced by tight coils. Most surprising, though, was a noticeable change in length. Sure, it may have been less than an inch, but when your hair grows as slowly as mine, every centimeter counts. But don’t just take my word for it—I spoke with natural-hair expert and author of Milady Standard: Natural Hair Care & Braiding Diane C. Bailey to discuss the benefits, and even some of the disadvantages, of using rice water as a reparative treatment.

“Rice water has a rich history of benefits for hair, especially on dry and color-treated strands,” says Bailey. “[It] provides strength and moisture, resulting in hair that feels smooth and strong from roots to ends. Additionally, rice water reduces friction, increases elasticity, and closes the cuticle, leaving hair extra shiny.” She explains that there are many ways to use rice water, either as a treatment or for daily use for “maintained hydration, since the multitude of minerals, nutrients, and vitamins in the rice can help repair many different hair types, especially color-treated hair (which is more prone to damage).

She also stressed the importance of thoroughly rinsing your hair after completing a rice-water treatment. As nutrient-filled as rice water is, it also can be quite damaging to your hair due to the amount of protein that the water absorbs. “Protein overload,” as Bailey calls it, is when there is too much protein and not enough moisture, which can cause hair to look  and feel very dry and brittle. This is something I experienced within my first week of trying the treatment, since I likely overused the rice water and my hair required more moisture than I was providing.

How you make your rice water will also affect your results. Bailey’s prep recommendation is one of the best methods for deriving the most benefits from your treatment. “One of the fastest and easiest ways to make rice water is to rinse a half cup of uncooked rice, add two to three cups of water, cook the rice in boiling water, and strain the rice water into a clean bowl for use. Alternatively, you can ferment the rice by soaking in water and use the strained water. You then leave the rice water out for 24 to 48 hours to ferment.

I personally like to let my water ferment overnight in an air-tight sealed jar to give my hair the maximum amount of available nutrients. Bonus points for adding any of your favorite citrus peels for a refreshing boost to your treatment. Start by using the treatment once or twice a week, then assess your hair for any signs of dehydration. You can always adjust depending on the weather (winter months usually mean your hair and skin are on the dryer side), but once you find your ideal routine, you can expect to see especially strong, fortified hair with minimal breakage, all for the cost of a bag of rice.

Well, TBH, "The benefits of rice water are not fully understood, and the benefits of rice water remain unproven," says Chimento. However, she adds that there is growing anecdotal evidence about its benefits (although more research is needed to support it):



Makes hair stronger: Just as protein is an essential part of maintaining a balanced diet, it also plays an important role in keeping hair healthy. The protein in rice water is believed to help improve the overall condition of hair (read: harder, better, faster, stronger).

Increases shine: Based on anecdotal evidence from advocates of rice water, the starchy solution is believed to lend luster to dull locks.

Can help hair grow: "Rice water may promote hair growth because it contains amino acids that support hair regeneration. It also contains vitamins C, B, and E, which promote hair growth as well. Vitamins C, B, and E help strengthen the hair shaft, and the stronger the shaft, the longer the hair can grow," explains Chimento.

If you're new to using protein or unsure if your hair can benefit from a protein treatment, most often, color-treated, relaxed, heat-styled, and natural hair needs a protein boost. "Because rice water is believed to make hair shinier and stronger along with helping to keep tangles at a minimum, it can be a great remedy for fine, dull hair," comments Friese. And according to Chimento, "Those with dry, brittle, curly hair may benefit because the protein in rice water improves the condition of hair and helps make it bouncy. 


Those who want to boost shine and improve and strengthen the condition of the hair cuticle may benefit, as well." While Chimento admits that rice water is safe for all hair types, she includes a caveat: "Those with low porosity hair may want to use it in moderation because the proteins may attach to your hair instead of your hair absorbing them."

How to Use Rice Water for Hair

Since rice water only requires two ingredients to make, whipping it up at home—Cardi-B style—seems like a no-brainer. Friese agrees: "My favorite way to use rice water is the old-fashioned 'in kitchen' method (more on that below)." Leaving this treatment on for up to 20 minutes is ideal, but if your hair is crunchy post-rinse, try removing it sooner the next time. Follow up with a hydrating deep conditioner. The practice of using rice water as a hair treatment is by no means new. Researchers track the beauty ritual back to ancient Japan, when court ladies living during the Heian period would saturate their hair in fermented rice water (also called Yu-Su-Ru) to stimulate growth. The process has resurfaced on YouTube, with influencers and bloggers steeping rice water for up to three days to ferment it at home. After the rice has soaked, it's strained from the water and the liquid is used to saturate the hair as a rinse-out or leave-in treatment.

As for celebrity testimonials, Cardi B revealed to fans that she's been using the method to tend to her natural hair at home. The rapper shared her routine on TikTok and detailed the process, which includes smearing on a DIY hair mask made with avocado and castor oils, and spritzing on rice water that has steeped for 24 hours before styling. "I put it outside so the sun can soak it," she wrote as she misted the liquid on her strands.

But should we swap out our hair gummies for grains in hopes of growing out the bob we chopped this fall?

According to dermatologist Dennis Gross, MD, founder of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare, there are no scientific studies or data to prove that rice water actually grows hair. In fact, there are very few topical treatments that have scientific backing when it comes to hair growth aside from Rogaine, prescription Procepia pills, and other treatments that might be given to you by your doctor, says Dr. Gross. The fact is, the rate your hair grows is mostly determined by genetics.

But even though rice water won't add inches in weeks, dermatologist Neil Sadick, MD, of Sadick Dermatology in New York City, notes that using rice water is totally safe and can provide nutrients to the hair, which will help strengthen hair overall. "Rice proteins can strengthen hair strands and seal split ends," Dr. Sadick says. "It contains carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins that can foster a balanced environment in the scalp to keep your follicles healthy." So, while rice water isn't scientifically proven to actually make your hair grow faster, it can still make it look shinier, healthier, and fuller.
