The Blob, The Fly, and The Thing - three silly 50s movies with incredible 80s remakes

I recently watched Cronenberg's The Fly with a friend who had never seen it before and started reflecting on these three fantastic horror movies. The stars must have aligned in the 80s for John Carpenter and David Cronenberg to give us two of the best horror movies ever made; The Blob is a bit of an underdog compared to the other two I think, but with a screenplay by Frank Darabont, I think it holds its own as a pretty perfectly constructed horror movie. The gory special effects in all three are wonderfully disgusting - I know this is a big r/movies cliche, but seriously, the practical effects in these movies are so much more fun than anything CGI.Overall I think all three movies pretty much set the bar for all great horror. The casting, the performances, the writing and pacing and tension, the monster design - you name it. They all nailed it.Of the originals from the 50s, I've only seen The Thing From Another World in its entirety, and it was not bad - you could see where a lot of the inspiration for certain scenes and elements in the Carpenter's remake came from. I haven't seen any of the original The Blob, and I've only ever seen that one infamously funny scene at the end of the original The Fly - "Help meeee!".if you haven't seen any of these in a while, go back and watch them now! via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3CWziiX
