Step #1: Create goals and come up with strategies on how to achieve them

I’ve once heard the following definition of success:

This makes perfect sense, right?

In fact, success is something very subjective and personal. There is not one definition of success that everybody would agree on.

While building businesses and making lots of money might be a success for some, others would define success as being able to focus on their families and others, however, might define spending time in nature as success.

While there are people being awarded the title successful, there is actually no comprehensive definition of success per se.

This is exactly why it is that important to define your own goals.

Bysetting your own goals and defining what you want to achieve, you define success for yourself.

Only if you have clear goals and if you are able to track your process, you can feel satisfaction.

If you don’t know where you are actually going, you will never arrive at a point where you can be truly happy.

That’s why you should define goals for yourself. When setting goals, you should think for the short but also the long-run.

Having long-term goals is inevitable to have a clear path.

Only if you know, where you want to be in a couple of years, you can focus on creating your days and weeks according to it.

So, here’s what to do:

Set yourself long-time goals which are motivating and keep you going.

Long might be difficult to define, so just try to find what works best for you.

For me, even a one-year plan is super motivating. For you, a 10-year plan might be more suitable — just try it out.

Just give yourself some time to figure out what timeframe fits best for your needs.

When setting goals, you should keep in mind that your life consists of different areas.

These might be relationships, business, health etc.

It is super helpful to keep these areas in mind when setting your goals.

Once you’ve clearly set your goals, you need strategies to achieve them. Studies are showing that people who visualize the way of achieving their goals and getting there step-by-step are much likelier to really succeed.

So, create actionable steps.

What can you do every month, week and every day to come closer to your goals? What tiny step can you complete?

In fact, small steps are adding up to powerful results if you stick to them continuously.

Step #2: Make time for building networks

No matter what big achievements you are pursuing, building the right network will always benefit you in numerous ways.

After investing in your own personal growth, investing in relationships is the best thing you can do.

Even if you are an online entrepreneur and feel like you just do your thing and don’t want to connect and network with people, your network can bring you closer to your goals more quickly than anything else.

No matter what job you are doing, at the end of the day, you are working with or for people.

Even though, going to events and networking might seem like a waste of time, the benefits of knowing the right people can be tremendous.

So, here’s what to do:

Always be aware of all your projects and your needs. If you do so, you will instantly be able to realize the potential of new connections.

Try to connect with valuable, like-minded people who are trying to achieve success in similar areas as yours.

Make sure to leave a great impression so that you will be the first one they think of when they think of your area of expertise.

Also, make sure to maintain contact so that you can come back to them whenever you need something.

Step #3: Nurture a lifetime reading habit

An investment in personal development is inevitable for your success.

Today we can enjoy the luxury of tons of books that have already been written and published in all areas that we can possibly think of.

Reading is one of the most powerful ways of self-improvement as it allows you to learn from the best people in the world.

No matter if you are into arts, business, technology or anything other than that — in every area there are experts and these experts are often authors of great books.

Reading the pieces of these people is sort of borrowing their brain and getting an insight into their thinking.

Even if it is just 10 minutes per day reading will help you to gain new ideas, optimize yourself and learn a lot if you keep it a daily habit.

Step #4: Keep a positive mindset

Positivity sounds so easy but is so hard to achieve nowadays.

Just by opening any social media feed or the tv you are exposed to tons of negative information.

Despite all this negativity around yourself, it is your obligation to focus your mind on your goals and keep a positive mindset.

Negative things will always happen, you can not prevent them. However, you are in control of how you react to them and if you let them get into your way.

One way to keep a positive mindset throughout your day is to practice little meditation sessions.

For example, Headspace is an application which provides guided meditation. You can even do a 1-minute meditation to get your focus back and gain clarity.

Step #5: Do 1% more than what is required

Did you ever think of improving your life by 1 %?

Probably not.

Everybody wants rapid transformation and quick changes.

However, a 1% improvement can have incredible results over a long period of time.

James Clear has created a great chart explaining. the power of those tiny gains:

Imagine improving your diet 1% per day for a whole year, improving your website 1% per day and putting 1% more effort into your writing — can you imagine what a powerful change you would create over time?

Step #6: Find a mentor

A mentor is a person who is already experienced in a certain field.

Once you know what you want to focus on and in which areas you want to be successful, you can look for a mentor who has already gone through your next steps.

The responsibility of a mentor is not to tell you what to do but rather advice you on your way.

He will warn you from possible mistakes and help you out with his advanced experience.

Also, a mentor can have many valuable connections and a strong network which you can profit from.

Step #7: Exchange ideas with different people often

Once you know your goals and know what you want to achieve, it is crucial to exchange ideas with many different people.

Different people will always have different ideas and feedback which is highly valuable.

A sure-shot way to failure is to be small-minded and ignore the feedback of others.

The more people you talk to, the easier you will have it to improve yourself, your service or product.

Talking to different people will always allow you to have a bigger spectrum of ideas thus enabling new projects and opportunities.

Step #8: Allow yourself to make new experiences

Successful people tend to be liberal-minded and open to new experiences.

You actually can not succeed by encapsulating yourself from the world and living in your own cave.

Regularly take breaks to experience new things, see new places and meet new people.

This way you can ensure to keep your mind fresh and open for new ideas.

Taking a step back, traveling and going on adventures is the best way to get an overview of your life and enabling yourself to reflect.

Step #9: Keep equipping yourself with practical skills

The ability to adapt and master new skills quickly is an incredibly powerful capacity.

Successful people are able to adapt quickly and learn quickly.

The 21st century is packed with new technologies and those who manage to master them first are the people who are highly in demand.

What you should do is to master different skills step-by-step.

If you keep trying you might find a perfect match for yourself or even better: you might master the ability to learn new skills quickly which is highly favorable.

Step #10: Take care of your personal health and energy

Last but not least, if you want to be successful keep care of yourself.

You only have one body so take care of it well.

Only if you manage to be fit and healthy you can perform to your best and exceed your own performance.

If you want to succeed, it is inevitable for you to feel good and keep care of your energy.

Regular sports, a balanced diet and the minimum amount of fresh air are the easiest habits that you can master every day.

Bottom Line

There is not one existing blueprint to success.

As defined at the beginning of the article, success means something different for everybody and you have to define what it means for you.

However, those #10 steps are a guideline of increasing your chances to achieve whatever you want in life.
