Friends, associates, acquaintances, and all mavens of the graphic or creative arts, we’re thrilled to welcome you back into the warm audio embrace of Overtime! You had better believe that today we’re bringing you Episode 78. Our affable, amiable host Meg Lewis is here to guide you through the whole buffet of design news, tips, tricks, and conversations we have to offer. Here’s what’s up for grabs this week:
Virtual creative jet-setting
While we’re all doing our part practicing proper social distancing, it’s easy to feel the pangs of missing out on experiencing art and design before your very eyes. The good news is that many museums and cultural institutions are bridging the gap, making their collections available right from the comfort of your own couch, solarium, or underground bunker. If you’re a housebound creative aficionado, Meg takes a look at what’s available, from online gallery experiences of top-tier museums, to immersive surveys of street art. So cozy up and get ready to get your culture on!

Embrace that helping hand
Look, at this very moment legions of self-employed creatives and freelance designers are finding themselves struggling due to clients putting projects on hold as of late. Meg takes a moment to survey some of the available programs that are out there to assist creative practitioners as they weather a turbulent economy. More importantly, though, we’re here to reinforce the notion that there is nothing shameful about seeking out help, especially in the midst of a historic world event. While these are certainly uncharted waters for designers, you needn’t tread water, and certainly not alone.
Making time, making choices
What if you do find yourself with time to tackle some of those back-burner projects you’ve had simmering for a while? Meg is joined on Episode 78 by the hosts of Design Life, Femke van Schoonhoven and Charli Prangley!
A product designer and marketing designer, respectively, Femke and Charli discuss with Meg the importance of pursuing side projects that are truly enjoyable to bring to life. Also, our designer trio speaks to the need to make time to take on side projects; this includes sacrifice and intentional choices, since it’s usually impossible to take on everything that you’ve got kicking around inside your creative noggin. ■
