Is 128GB RAM overkill?

 “Should I buy 32GB, 64GB, or even 128GB RAM”

The Short answer is Yes.

The long answer is: RAM plays an important part in today’s computer systems, with most games and software now becoming very memory hungry. Remember the Infamous Chrome?

The comparison here between 32, 64, and 128 gigs of RAM when it comes to photo and video editing and I'll just start off by saying what Ram does is that it lets you multitask better. It's going to let you have more programs open to be more efficient at any given time as well as speed some rendering time up a little bit.

Depending on how much you have now you don't need an overly huge amount of RAM if you're not doing photo and video editing. If you're gaming usually 16 gigs of DDR4 Ram is going to be sufficient for the average person but if you are getting into heavy photo and video 4K and what not editing then yeah you might want to think about 32 and even 64 gigs of RAM in some cases.

So how much RAM does one really need? Well I have to tell you, if you are using any productivity tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects, 16GB RAM will not be enough, 32GB will be okayish, and 64GB or 128GB will be the sweet spot.

If you are building a PC I definitely recommend getting 32GB RAM memory sticks, Why, well with time, you can easily buy more and go to say 128GB if your motherboard has 4 DIMMS. If it has 8 DIMM slots, that's 256GB of RAM.

You will be able to handle any workstation-grade RAM requirements with ease if you are doing VM workflows, and also be able to throw any game at your rig, without the machine developing a cough.

The rule of thumb is you're going to want as few sticks of RAM as possible just because of the physical characteristics it's easier for your computer to access say two sticks of 16 GB than four sticks of 8GB of RAM.
