Have you ever met a celebrity and found they were much kinder or ruder than you expected?

Have you ever met a celebrity and found they were much kinder or ruder than you expected?

I met Nathan Fillion at a science fiction convention. He turned out to be a genuinely warm, kind person. A friend of mine was eating in the bar at the hotel hosting the convention, and when she realized she’d forgotten her purse, he paid her tab.

I ran into William Sharner at the same convention. I mean that literally: I was leaving the men’s room, he was coming in, neither of us were watching where we were going, we collided head-on, boom! He struck me (get it?) as a bit of a jerk. I said sorry, he didn’t.

He was also much shorter than I expected.

I nearly dropped a sewing machine on James “The Amazing” Randi’s foot. We ended up chatting for a while after. He was smart, self-deprecating, full of humor, and had a formidably incisive mind.

He too was much shorter than I expected.

I ran into Sam Walton at a Walmart. Again literally. I was carrying a case of motor oil. He came around the corner and wham! Didn’t realize it was him until later. He was doing a surprise inspection of the Walmart, something he apparently did from time to time.

He was modest, humble, not flashy at all. At the time, I believe he was the richest person in the world.
