I decided to consult with a professional and reached out to Neutrogena skin care expert Bertha Baum, D.O., who said she didn't recommend coconut oil to her patients, citing the fact that it can clog pores.

Despite Dr. Baum’s reservations, I decided to carry on with my beauty experiment. I opted for unrefined coconut oil as it is the most pure form.

I picked it up at my local Target store, crossed my fingers that it would work, and put it to the 30-day challenge. As not to disturb my facial routine — my skin is sensitive and reacts to any slight changes — I decided to apply it every night after I washed my face, right before bed.

The first night came and went and I swore up and down that it had already lightened my circles.

After a couple nights of consistent application, I took note of how soft my under-eye skin felt. I tend to get dry, rough patches from time to time, so this was a pleasant surprise. However, upon further inspection, I realized that my circles were the same color and size as they were when I first started. Nothing had diminished, nothing had blown me away...yet.


Around the halfway point of my trial, I started to come to terms with the fact that perhaps this was a fluke. Tired of dark circles, I decided to give coconut oil a shot for a week. There are some things that I observed during the process. Find out inside!

It might sound too simplistic, but no matter the issue at hand, the solution almost always lies around you. This is specifically true for many skin-related issues. Any condition that causes the eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles due to rubbing or scratching the skin around them. Hay fever sufferers in particular will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Also, dark circles from allergies are caused by superficial venous congestion[2] in the capillaries under eyes.


Medications

Any medications that cause blood vessels to dilate can cause circles under the eyes to darken. The skin under the eyes is very delicate, any increased blood flow shows through the skin.


Anemia

The lack of nutrients in the diet, or the lack of a balanced diet, can contribute to the discoloration of the area under the eyes. It is believed that iron deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency can cause dark circles as well.[3] Iron deficiency is the most common type of anemia and this condition is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to the body tissues.


The skin can also become more pale during pregnancy and menstruation (due to lack of iron), allowing the underlying veins under the eyes to become more visible.


Fatigue

A lack of sleep and mental fatigue can cause paleness of the skin, allowing the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear bluer or darker.[4][better source needed]


Age

Dark circles are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age. This is because as people get older, their skin loses collagen, becoming thinner and more translucent. At one time, hydroquinone solution was often mixed in an oil-free moisturizer that acted like a skin bleach. However the use of hydroquinone for skin whitening has been banned in European countries due to health concerns. In 2006, the United States Food and Drug Administration revoked its approval of hydroquinone for over the counter preparations warning that it may cause cancer or have many other detrimental effects.[citation needed]


The use of hydroquinone skin-whitening products can be toxic, harmful or lethal for humans.[citation needed]


Modern treatments include topical creams that are marketed for the condition. Various ingredients have been researched, developed and included in these creams. Here’s what sleep deprivation does to your appearance

The skin under your eyes is different. This skin is thinner, which means that the blood vessels are closer to the surface. I’ve always wondered why we get dark circles under our eyes, and whether anything can be done about them - Fran, 34, Melbourne


Thanks for the question Fran, it’s a common one. Many people have an appearance of dark circles on the lower eyelids, and they have many different causes.


Dark rings under the eyes are worsened by general fatigue, especially lack of sleep. The daily fluctuation is due to swelling of the skin, leading to a change in light diffusion, which looks like increased darkness of the skin.


For some people, all we can say is that their parents had dark circles under their eyes and therefore they do too. This trait can run in families, and is more pronounced in certain ethnic groups.


Sun exposure can also create dark circles under the eyes, by increasing the melanin content. The skin in this region can pigment more than the surrounding skin because it’s more sensitive.


Because the skin is thinnest under the eyes, the blood vessels here will be closer to the surface, meaning they look darker. As we age, our skin gets thinner and we lose collagen (the main structural protein in skin) and elastin (a highly elastic protein in connective tissue), which is why we get wrinkles. This often makes the blood vessels (which are dark in colour) under our eyes stand out more.


The tear trough (the depression below the eye) also deepens with age because of movement of fat under the eye forwards, creating shadowing below it.

The dark circles could also be a mere shadow from tired, puffy eyelids, or just from the anatomical shape of someone’s eye sockets: some are hollowed more than others.


People with this appearance could be suffering from a skin condition of the eyelid skin such as eczema or allergic contact dermatitis. Inflammation from dry and sore skin, and also rubbing, cause melanin production.


Some people may not always have dark circles, but may have been rubbing their eyes from fatigue or itchiness caused by hayfever. In these cases, the dark rings will simply go away after a while.


Can dark circles under the eyes be treated?

Darker skin under the eyes is a perfectly normal and natural appearance. But if it bothers you, there are a few options. Treatment will depend on what causes the dark circles, and these causes need to be addressed. In some cases, only an improvement may be possible.


Removing the cause of inflammation of the eyelids will stop the melanin factory from overproducing. Then a fading cream can be used to reduce the colour. Be careful to use a cream without hydroquinone, which is a bleach that can harm our skin if used for too long, as it will be necessary to treat for a very long time.


Ideally a fading cream would contain licorice root extract, as there is some evidence this inhibits the melanin factory in the cells without causing toxicity to the cells. Uva-Ursi plant leaf extract and a type of nanopeptide (Nanopeptide-1) are also commonly used. But while we know they are safe to use their effectiveness hasn’t been tested.

Vitamin E oil is like a skin care superfood. It’s an all-purpose ingredient that works for the majority of skin types, including dry, mature, and sensitive skin.



Can vitamin E actually treat dark circles?

Although vitamin E does have many skin benefits, there have been very few studies to prove its effectiveness in treating dark circles.


A 2004 studyTrusted Source was conducted to test whether a gel containing 2 percent phytonadione, 0.1 percent retinol, and 0.1 percent vitamins C and E was effective in reducing dark under-eye circles and wrinkles of the lower eyelids in adults.


The study found that the topical application of the gel was fairly or moderately effective in reducing dark under-eye circles, especially in cases of hemostasis, in Japanese adults. The gel also helped to decrease wrinkles slightly.


But because the amount of vitamin E in this gel was so small, it’s difficult to discern how effective the vitamin E was in treating under-eye circles, compared with the other ingredients in the gel.


Ways to use vitamin E

Capsule

The oil in vitamin E capsules, such as the Thorne Ultimate-E supplements, can be effective in protecting against free radicals, deeply moisturizing the skin, and promoting cell regeneration, but the results may vary.


“The oil that’s generally housed inside the capsules we buy aren’t pure vitamin E,” explains Rashidi. “The capsules typically contain carrier oils like soybean oil or glycerin, so while this combination won’t harm you, the benefits may not go any further than just hydrating the skin.”


Additionally, you should be cautious about applying oil from a capsule straight to your skin, especially in the sensitive and thin under-eye area.


“I recommend patch testing or using a very small amount to see how your skin will respond first,” explains Alexia Wambua, a licensed aesthetician and founder of Native Atlas.


Oil

When it comes to oils, look for ones that contain 100 percent pure vitamin E and are organic, unscented, and non-synthetic.


“If the oil is combined with other organic components like jojoba or avocado, that’s great too. The added antioxidants will provide even more skin benefits,” explains Rashidi.


You can apply vitamin E oil like DERMA E Vitamin E Skin Oil to your under-eye area. But keep in mind that the area has very thin skin, and you should avoid tugging at or rubbing the area. Patting motions with your ring finger are best.


With any new product, you should do a patch test before applying directly to your eye area.


“If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend using a very small amount and gently patting it into the skin,” says Wambua. “If you are breaking out badly or have an increased amount of redness after using vitamin E, I would recommend to stop using it.”


Cream

Look for skin-healthy ingredients like peptides to support collagen production, caffeine to help decrease puffiness, and SPF to prevent sun damage.


“The eye cream should be safe to use for sensitive skin and free of any fragrance,” says Rashidi. “You’ll also want to make sure that the formula is specifically made for the skin around your eyes.”


When applying an eye cream containing vitamin E, like The Body Shop Vitamin E Eye Cream, Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream, or One Love Organics Vitamin E Eye Balm, follow these steps:


On the under-eye area, use your ring finger to scoop a pea-sized amount of product.

Gently dab small dots under your eyes, starting in the innermost corner and making your way outward.

Pat the cream into your skin, let it absorb for 2 minutes, then continue with the rest of your skin care routine.

“If you are someone whose skin doesn’t react well to retinol, I would recommend trying a vitamin E under-eye cream to help with signs of aging or reducing the appearance of dark circles,” explains Wambua.


Combined with almond oil

According to Rashidi, using vitamin E oil and almond oil together on the under-eye area can help to lighten dark circles and reduce under-eye puffiness, due to the combination of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that these two oils contain.


“Almond oil also contains retinol and vitamin K, and together with vitamin E, can help keep the delicate skin under your eyes smooth without irritating it,” explains Rashidi.


Almond oil contains vitamin E, so using them together should strengthen the positive benefits of vitamin E.


“Almond oil is also rich in fatty acids that will help hydrate the skin and diminish the appearance of dark circles,” says Wambua. “Additionally, almond oil is UV protectiveTrusted Source, which is vital for protecting the skin underneath your eyes.”


However, the UV protection offered by almond oil is minimal, so you should still use an SPF product if you’re seeking sun protection.


How to use vitamin E for dark circles

Capsule

First, puncture the capsule with a safety pin or something sharp.

Use clean fingers to apply the oil to the under-eye area.

Pat the oil into your eye area using your ring finger.

Wash your hands and throw out the capsule once you’re done.

Oil

Apply a drop or two of the oil to a clean ring finger.

Lightly dab the oil onto your under-eye area.

When not to use Vitamin E

If you’re prone to dermatitis-type reactions, you may want to avoid applying vitamin E in its purest form directly to the under-eye area.


Since the skin here is especially thin and more sensitive, you may experience adverse effects. Also, for those who break out more easily, it could potentially clog pores and cause acne.



The bottom line

Although there are few studies to show that vitamin E oil will help prevent or treat dark circles, it won’t hurt to apply the ingredient to your under-eye area, especially since vitamin E contains antioxidant and hydrating properties.

"I have them genetically and they were always very intense. The first makeup product I picked up was concealer. Why Do We Get Eye Circles?

To be honest, even if you’ve spent your life diligently treating your skin as carefully as you possibly can, we’re all going to show signs of aging sooner or later – and that includes under-eye bags and dark circles.

The Best Routines for Getting Rid of Dark Circles and Under Eye Bags

1. Cold Compress

In the morning or evening – or better yet, in the morning AND the evening – apply a cold compress for about 10 minutes. If you have a mask you can keep in your fridge and pull out twice a day, that’s the easiest way to try this dark circle reducing method. Just make sure to keep it clean and give it a good soapy scrub a few times a week!


2. Cucumbers

We’ve all seen cucumbers used as cold compresses on television and in films – but do they really work?


In fact, cucumbers have skin-lightening and mild astringent properties, so you can use cucumber slices to fix raccoon eyes naturally.


To try this method twice a day, chop a fresh cucumber into thick slices and then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Then, leave the slices on your eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse your eye area with warm (but not hot) water after using.


3. Cucumber Juice + Lemon Juice

If cucumber slices don’t work for you, try mixing equal parts cucumber and lemon juice and then use a cotton ball to apply to your under-eye circles. (DO NOT get lemon juice in your eye!) Leave the solution on your skin for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.


4. Rose Water

Rose water doesn’t just smell fantastic – it can also soothe and rejuvenate tired skin. Like cucumber, it’s a mild astringent, so it can work as a skin toner. Just soak cotton makeup remover pads in rose water for a few minutes, and then let the soaked makeup pads sit on your CLOSED eyelids. Leave them for about 15 minutes twice daily.

5. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are high in lycopene, a substance that’s excellent for your cardiovascular health, vision and your skin. Lycopene can help create softer, more supple skin, as well as decrease the appearance of dark under eye circles.


To gain the medical benefits of the lycopene found in tomatoes, mix equal parts tomato juice with lemon juice and then use a cotton ball or makeup remover pad to apply it to your under eye area. (Again, PLEASE do not get lemon juice in your eyes.) Leave the solution for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water, twice daily.

6. Cold tea bags

If you don’t have a cold compress or mask to use, substitute with tea bags. Many teas like green tea have the added benefit of antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe strained capillaries in your under eye area.


To use cold tea bags as a compress, soak a tea bag in clean water and then place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Then, place the tea bags on your eyes. Leave for 10 minutes or so twice daily before removing and rinsing the area with warm water.

Potatoes are a surprising source of lots of vitamin C, which among other things is great for the synthesis of collagen to promote healthier, younger-looking skin.
