Lampante Oil (Not fit for human consumption)

1. Pre-Poo treatment


Extra Virgin Olive Oil is an excellent pre- shampoo conditioner. It will protect you hair shaft from the harsh chemicals contained in shampoos.


Application


Section your hair and add the of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to your moist unwashed hair. Apply the oil to your hair shaft and scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap for 15-20mins (with or without heat) and then proceed to wash and condition as usual.

2. Hot Oil Treatment


Add 2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to an applicator bottle or any bottle that you have. Heat the oil by placing the bottle in warm water. Let the oil heat to your preferred temperature but do not overheat it, check the temperature by testing with your wrist Apply to the scalp and massage for 10-15 mins. The oil will nourish your skin and prevent dryness. Massaging will promote growth by improving blood circulation.

Apply the oil on your moist hair shaft as well.

Cover the hair and leave the oil in for about 30 minutes. The generated heat will promote nutrient absorption.

If you have dry hair, it is recommended to have this treatment once a week. For oily hair, you can do this every 15 days or do it once a week but moderate the amount of oil you put on your scalp.

If the oil didn’t work, you’re supposed to try onion juice, aloe vera, garlic, hibiscus flowers, fenugreek seeds, eggs, green tea, Indian gooseberry, flax seeds, avocado, licorice root, curry leaves, lemon juice, vinegar, neem powder, camphor, baking soda or lime juice.

The more damage you put on your hair requires deep conditioning but finding that sweet spot to the right amount depends on your lifestyle you lead and the needs of your hair. Here are some tips to help guide you.


What is a deep conditioner?

Deep conditioners are thicker conditioners with ingredients that penetrate the hair shaft. They are intended to temporarily repair and nourish between the hair cuticles with its higher viscosity. They are heavier and need to be left on the hair longer to fully penetrate the hair shaft. Applying with heat allows for it to penetrate easier and better and these conditioners have penetrating oils and other ingredients that fight frizz, dryness, and damaged strands.



How often should you deep condition?

You should deep condition after every wash but for some that is a huge time commitment and it may not be necessary. Washing your hair more than once or twice a week may be too often. Too much conditioning can create over-moisturized hair and disrupt the proper balance of moisture and protein that hair needs. Deep conditioning once or twice a week is more than enough, anything more than that may be overdoing it. Your hair will let you know.


What does over-conditioned hair look like?

Over-conditioned hair, also known as hygral fatigue, is limp, mushy, or lifeless. It may be over-conditioned or over-moisturized and the quickest fix is to use a protein treatment. If you find your hair appears mushy or limp and you are deep conditioning more than once a week, try reducing how often you deep condition to just once a week.


On the other hand, if your hair is responding well to 2-3 deep conditioning treatments, then there is no need to make a change. Many women with color-treated hair or those who use heat regularly probably need that extra moisture, so allow your hair to guide you on what it needs. In order for your hair to remain healthy, it needs to retain moisture and nutrients, and those are often depleted with hot tools, chemical processing, surfactants in shampoos, and daily wear and tear. When your hair is damaged, it can become more porous, meaning it loses water much faster.


Olive oil plays a role in helping hydrate hair but not in the way you might think: Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat. Hair actually has the ability to absorb monounsaturated fats, according to research. (According to one study, they've been able to document the absorption of certain oils by tracking the thinning film that surrounds the strand, and it also shows that doesn't happen with all oils, like mineral for example, so while some smaller oil molecules can penetrate hair, some will only sit on top.)


And when olive oil is absorbed into the hair, it can actually help hair retain hydration. Retain is the key word here: "Oil is not a conditioner, only water-based products can truly moisturize your hair," says hairstylist Gabrielle Corney. "These oils have many hair benefits, but they work best when in conjunction with a water-based hydrating cream." Liken it to using an oil in skin care; they are most hydrating when tapped on top of a lotion or essence to help "trap" in the water.


Olive oil also contains a large amount of antioxidants from vitamins E and K. Free-radical damage not only happens to the skin but hair as well; the oxidative stress can actually cause hair to age faster, according to one study. The antioxidants will help neutralize those and mitigate any future stressors.


Other than helping retain hydration, research suggests, olive oil can also act as a lubricant for strands to reduce breakage. Shockingly, a significant amount of damage to hair can actually happen during the shower: Hair is weakest when wet, then when you add in surfactants from shampoo and the scrubbing motion, you cause friction between strands. This friction can lead to raised cuticles, stretching, and splintering. When you apply an oil before washing, the film helps minimize the chances of this.


It should be noted that these benefits only come when choosing the right type: Opt for extra-virgin organic olive oil, which is the least processed and contains more of the hair-helping nutrients explained above.

What are the downsides?

As with all good things in life, it's not right for everything or every woe.


There are many claims that it can help with dandruff by moisturizing flaky, scaly patches—as well as being antimicrobial. However, most dermatologists refute this. According to board-certified dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D., "Dandruff is caused by a yeast on our scalp, and if you use olive oil, you are feeding that yeast, which might make dandruff worse." (She also notes she's not against using olive oil as a hydrator, especially on the ends, but it might not be right for everyone.)


Another potential side effect: If you are acne-prone on your chest or back, and your hair is long enough to touch the area, you might be unintentionally clogging pores and leading to worse breakouts.


Finally, never use olive oil before using hot tools or a blow dryer. Olive oil has a burn temperature starting as low as 320°F. Most hot tools and dryers on the market go well above that. Translation? You are literally cooking your strands.


What hair types should (and shouldn't) use olive oil?

Those with extremely dry hair or those with kinky and curly textures will benefit the most from olive oil, notes Corney, who says it is one of her favorite oils for her clients. This hair texture is naturally more porous and, therefore, loses moisture faster. Also because of the winding strand pattern, it has more points on the hair that are prone to breakage (your hair is more susceptible to damage at curves and turns), so it needs more lubricating, especially during the detangling or washing process.


However, it's too heavy of an oil for those with fine or straight hair. It will weigh down strands and make the style appear greasy, especially when applied at the roots. These hair types would benefit more from a thinner option with less slip, like jojoba or argan oil.


You might be tempted to use olive oil on color-treated hair, specifically if you lighten it, as bleaching hair opens up the hair cuticle, making it more porous as well. However, olive oil has a rich gold tone, which over time, can slowly make hair dye appear warmer or even yellow. "Any hair product that's not clear has the potential to alter color," says colorist and co-founder of the salon Spoke&Weal Christine Thompson. "So if you apply a product, like an oil, that has a specific tone, your hair can adapt that color with repeated use."


How to apply it to your hair.

Using olive oil isn't just as simple as pulling it off your kitchen counter and dosing your strands with it. It can be, but there are a few more effective ways to use it, depending on your needs.


Pre-shampoo treatment: As noted above, washing your hair can actually cause damage to the strands through friction and surfactants. So before you take a shower, evenly apply oil—the amount will depend on length and thickness. If you are especially dry, we recommend coating the whole strand. Or if you are prone to oily scalps, you can just focus on mid-shaft to the ends.

Use olive oil no more than once a week, before you take a shower. Set aside a day or night when you don't need to go anywhere. You'll want to let the olive oil sit in your hair to get the full effect, and your hair may remain somewhat greasy even after you rinse out the oil.

Don't shampoo your hair before using olive oil: the treatment will work better as a conditioner if your hair is clean, but not shampooed. Shampoo is an astringent, and it will strip your hair of oils.[2]

It is okay to wash your hair and condition it before using olive oil. However, the most effective tactic is to apply the oil first, then rinse your hair afterward.

Warm a small bowl of olive oil in the microwave.[3] You may also use a pot on the stove, but you'll need to be extra-vigilant to make sure that it doesn't overheat! The olive oil doesn't need to be super hot – just warm enough to be more fluid, which helps saturate your hair.

Consider mixing the olive oil with almond oil and egg. This may lend your hair more shine and help replenish lost nutrients. You may also consider combining the olive oil with other essential oils like almond oil, tea tree oil, and jojoba oil.[4] Try making a mixture using the following increments:

1 egg. Consider using the whole egg, not only the yellow part, because the whites contain the hair-healing renewing agents. The egg-white is even more important if you have acne or skin deficiencies.

1 teaspoon of raw almond oil. This step is optional, but it really helps to smooth your skin and hair. This is especially important if you're using a high-acidity olive oil.

Rub the olive oil all over your hair while it is dry. Pour the oil on your head and massage thoroughly throughout, from scalp to tip. Use a liberal amount; don't skimp on the oil!

Make sure to do this in the bathroom or somewhere else that's easy to clean. Ideally, stand in the shower, the tub, or outdoors, and don't wear any clothes that you don't want to get oily. There's a good chance that some of the oil will spill!

Leave the olive oil in your hair for 30-60 minutes. Put a plastic bag or foil around your hair to retain the oils. If your hair is long, bundle it up on top of your head, to help keep a little heat in (similar to bleaching hair). The bag or foil will help keep oil off of things if you sit down and help keep some of the heat in. This consistence in heat will help the olive oil saturate the hair and also give your scalp a good moisturizing![5]

To speed up the process, stretch a shower cap or foil over your hair and take a warm shower. The steam and heat will help your hair absorb the olive oil more quickly.

Rinse out the olive oil. After the oil has been in your hair for 30-60 minutes, it's time to rinse! Take the bag/foil off and undo your hair. If you haven't done so already, hop in the shower and run warm water through your locks.

Do not use shampoo for this shower. Again, shampoo can strip the oils from your hair, reversing the healthful effect of the olive oil treatment. Conditioner is okay.

You also should not use olive oil in your hair if you have dandruff, Zito says. That's because olive oil promotes the growth of the yeast that causes dandruff. 


"In individuals prone to dandruff, [olive oil] can actually worsen the condition like throwing kerosine onto a fire," Zito says. "The more often you apply it, the greater the chance of exacerbating the condition."


Some people also claim olive oil can act as a heat protectant, but Zito does not recommend this. Extra virgin olive oil has a smoking point of 320 °F, Zito says, and many flatirons, wands, and curling irons reach temperatures much higher than that between 400 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
