I speak Danish, so I knew who he was before he broke internationally as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale. I loved his comedic turn as a neurotic and sweaty butcher in De grønne slagtere (The Green Butchers) and a petty thug in Blinkende lygter (Blinking Lights) and I was thrilled to finally see him get some well-earned attention from the rest of the world via the Bond franchise.Somehow, however, I missed seeing Jagten (The Hunt) when it came out in 2012, and I only watched it last week. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.Though a great deal of credit has to be given to Thomas Vinterberg's excellent direction, Mads plays his character with such stoically contained rage and frustration that his performance gives the film the kind of tension you would expect from a thriller rather than a drama. I was captivated from the moment the movie started, and the climax, a scene that Mads carries for the most part wordlessly, using only the contortion of emotions on his face, reduced me to tears. I thought already at that point that it was a phenomenal film, but the very last moments added yet another shock, leaving me sitting through the credits absolutely stunned.Without question, Jagten is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and you owe it to yourself to see it as well.
