Caterina Scorsone (born October 16, 1981)[1] is a Canadian actress. She is best known for playing Dr. Amelia Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (2010-present) and its spin-off Private Practice (2010-2013). In 2020, Scorsone guest starred as Dr. Shepherd on multiple episodes of Station 19, a new Grey’s spinoff set in a firehouse.  Prior to this, Scorsone appeared in a number of films, including the 2014 action-thriller The November Man, opposite Pierce Brosnan, and the 2010 Martin Campbell crime-mystery Edge of Darkness. Scorsone also played a grown-up Alice for Syfy Network’s 2009 miniseries of the same name and earned a second Gemini nomination.  Other credits include a recurring role on STARZ’s drama series Crash starring Dennis Hopper, and the lead role of Jess Mastriani on W Network’s crime-drama 1-800-Missing from 2003-2006.

In recent years, Scorsone’s passion and purpose has been centered on her family, including her three-year-old daughter, Pippa, who was born with Down syndrome.  While raising Pippa, Scorsone has become an advocate for those with cognitive diversities and disabilities. The actress uses her platform to promote greater understanding and awareness in an effort to end stigmas around Down syndrome and other disabilities and encourage greater access and inclusion.

Scorsone began acting when she was eight years old on the long running Canadian children’s program, Mr. Dressup. A proud native of Toronto, Canada, she currently resides in Los Angeles with her three daughters.

Early life[edit]

Scorsone was born in TorontoOntario. She is the middle child of five in her family. Her father, Antonio Bruno Scorsone, is a social worker, and her mother, Suzanne Rozell Scorsone, is a social anthropologist. She is of half Italian descent.[2] Her four siblings include: older twin sisters (b. 1977)[3] including Francesca, who served as a Canadian Forces captain, and a younger sister and brother.[4] She attended the Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts in Toronto where she starred in Oklahoma! and several other productions, as well as alternative school Subway Academy II. In addition, she attended Trinity College in the University of Toronto, majoring in Literary Studies and minoring in Philosophy,[5] and in 2005 finished her studies there.

Career[edit]

Scorsone's first TV appearances were regular guest spots as a child on the Canadian children's TV show Mr. Dressup starting at age eight.[6][7] In 1998, she had a role in one of CBC Radio's Mystery Project shows called Peggy Delaney. Scorsone played the estranged fifteen-year-old daughter, Amber, who comes from Vancouver to stay with her mom for a school term in Toronto.

Scorsone had her breakthrough after landing the leading role in the Lifetime crime drama series 1-800-Missing, from 2003 to 2006. She played the part of Jess Mastriani, a young woman who sees missing persons in visions. After Jess saved some missing persons, she joined the FBI, where a special squad was formed around her, to find missing persons. In 2009, she starred as Alice Hamilton on the Showcase TV miniseries Alice which was later broadcast on Syfy in America.

In 2010, Scorsone joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes' drama series Private Practice in the recurring role of Amelia Shepherd, the sister of Derek Shepherd from Grey's Anatomy.[8] She was cast after Eric Stoltz, who was directing one of the show's episodes, heard about the role of Amelia and remembered Scorsone from working with her on My Horrible Year! He mentioned her to Shonda Rhimes and commented on the resemblance Scorsone had to Patrick Dempsey (the actor who plays Derek Shepherd).[6] As of July 2010, Scorsone had been promoted to series regular for Private Practice.[9] She appeared in the third episode of the seventh season of Grey's Anatomy where Amelia and Derek started to reconcile their differences.[10]

In March 2014, Scorsone returned to Grey's Anatomy after a 2-year absence as a recurring guest star. In June of the same year, it was announced that she was promoted to series regular status for the show's 11th season.[11]

She starred as lead character in the Lifetime crime drama series Missing from 2003 to 2006. She appeared as Amelia Shepherd in the ABC medical dramas Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. Scorsone also has starred in a number of television films, including Alice (2009)

Personal life[edit]

Scorsone married Rob Giles of The Rescues in Toronto in June 2009. They have three daughters: Eliza born on July 6, 2012,[12][13] Paloma “Pippa”, born on November 8, 2016 and Lucinda “Lucky”, who was originally named Arwen Lucinda, born in late 2019.[14][15][16][17]

Her first pregnancy was written into her character's storyline in season 5 of Private Practice, her second pregnancy was not featured in Grey's Anatomy,[18] and her third pregnancy was written into her character's storyline on season 16 of Grey's Anatomy.

In May 2020, the couple filed for divorce after ten years of their marriage.[19][20][21]
